  1. 2 of his walks are intentional also. The good thing about Colvin, though, is he is the type of hitter that can maintain a decent batting average. His strike outs aren't horrible, but his K rate has been pretty consistent as a pro so far. He's only 21 so there is plenty of room for improvement.
  2. This would be a good time for Willie Harris to remember that he sucks.
  3. Theriot Pie Lee Ramirez Soriano Murton Derosa Barrett should be the lineup for the rest of the season (with some Floyd sprinkled in). Hell put Soriano back in CF if you aren't gonna callup Felix.
  4. Hill's been on the 40-man all season. eh, I guess not. I don't know what the hell the Cubs are doing.
  5. I realize that a thread like this is designed to create controversy, and get attention but its not like his .829 OPS prior to today or his .340 OBP is that terrible. Neither is a particularly good number either. I want something more from a 1st round pick than not terrible. I haven't been paying close attention to Colvin this year, but taking a look now and he's been completely unimpressive. Add in the piss poor year of Samardzija and last year's draft is looking quite shaky. Colvin's k/bb is now 40/8, with a line of .299/.333/.478. Hope to see the kid get it together soon. It's the Cubs. Those numbers would be 3rd on the team.
  6. It's Carlos' 26th birthday today. The Cubs should celebrate by scoring 26 runs (this month).l
  7. Samardzija has really been bad this year. Much more worried about him than Veal, because 1. Veal has performed at a high level before and 2. because Veal has much better stuff. Never been a big fan of Jeff, but he should be nowhere near this bad.
  8. What about the scenario that Lou opts out at the end of the year to take the Yankees job, while Hendry is replaced, allowing a new owner to hire a new GM who can then hire his own manager? I think that might be the most likely good case. Of course, best case is Hendry fixes this mess and they go on to enjoy a great season together, but how likely is that? I think that's the only way both return next year anyway. I don't know. I see the Yanks being more interested in Girardi. But I would enjoy this scenario.
  9. Hanley will be completely off limits for at least the next 3 2/3 seasons. He will still be relatively cheap at least until that point, and no reason to trade him. Cabrera could be had, but I think it would take much more than the Cubs have to offer. Unless they want to trade Hill, Guzman and Pie.
  10. IT'S GO TIME! MANDELBAUM! MANDELBAUM! MANDELBAUM!
  11. Maybe it's true. Bruce at the Herald apparently heard something to the effect that Lou is not happy with Hendry's performance. Could be mutual. I don't suppose Bruce will reveal his source on this. http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/cubs.asp This could be fun. On one hand, if the roster isn't good enough to the manager, then the GM has to look himself in the mirror. On antoher hand, if the manager is saying his roster is not good enough to win, then he's basically sold out his players. I don't think either guy wants to embarrass the other. Lou can't quit because it makes him look...well, like a quitter. Hendry can't fire him, because it makes his hiring decision look horrible. As I see it, best case scenario is both get fired ASAP. Worst case is they finish out the year together and make up, and go into next year with Lou taking more of a part in the personnel decisions (see Parcells, buying the groceries speech). In between there are a ton of scenarios.
  12. On the Cashman thing, I think for several reasons GMs don't go from the Yanks to other teams. First, if you can't win in NY with that payroll, you can't win anywhere. Second, it's the top of the ladder job in the MLB, anything else would be a downgrade. Thirdly, he's not a good GM.
  13. I picked walk-off walk, HBP, etc. Usually they are proceeded by walking the bases loaded and/or an error, and 3 pitching changes to get a matchup that works less. I do enjoy a good blowout also. Wastes a lot less time. For example, the 15 inning Pirates game, I wasted 4.5 hours watching. Last night, I watched about 40 minutes and then flipped channels for the rest of the night. Night NOT wasted.
  14. Wow. 47 point offensive day (thanks to 5 HRs/8 RBIs from Uggla, Byrnes and Grady), and I'm gonna need every bit of it. Quakers working on 14 innings of 5-hit, shutout baseball from Derek Lowe and Gil Meche. Add in a 2 1/3 hitless outing from a reliever and I got a 73-point night pitched against me. Looks like I'm gonna be down 30+ with a 1 start advantage.
  15. I would add Liriano to the list. Yeah, the names were just off the top of my head of guys who have put up productive seasons, already, yet get more exempt time. I didn't include Verlander on my original list. Also, guys like Lincecum, Alex Gordon, and the like who will lose their rookie status this year are all great keepers.
  16. I think the overall picture of pitcher scoring is perfect. If there was a way to keep the scores the same (i.e. 6 IP, 10 TB, 2 ERs, 5 Ks starts = same # of points as now), but we could lower IP points and lessen the blow of TBA, then it would be perfect. Right now, I think the end justifies the means. But I would like it more if the means and end were the same. Know what I mean?
  17. A lot of guys losing exemptions this year. I lose arguably 2 of the top 4 coming into this year (Sizemore and Wright, with Ryan Howard and Holliday being the others). Both of them are also done with exemptions. Top exempt hitters are Hanley Ramirez (Cakes), McCann (Lynx), Zimmerman (Quakers), Kelly Johnson (NC), and Fielder (GHS) Top pitchers are: Hamels (Raw), King Felix (VooDoo), Cain (Fuzzy) Edit: the only top 30 hitters in scoring who are exempt next year (by my quick count) are H Ramirez, Hardy, Uggla, K Johnson. The exempt pitchers among the top 30 are: Gorzellany, Shields, Cain, Hamels, Hill, Maine, and Verlander.
  18. Good news. Mateo is probably trade bait at this point. But I think he has a real good arm and could be a good 4th starter or a better than average reliever.
  19. It's actually worse.
  20. If the Cubs lose this game and get swept by the Braves (possibly even lose 2 of 3), I am downgrading my dish package and will not watch another game this season.
  21. I'd rather have Wallace, Gordon and Deng.
  22. Absolutely not. Selective means choosing the right pitch to hit regardless of the count, whereas patience means working the count - which in turn translates to two quick strikes and a third one in the dirt swung at. I wouldn't say absolutely not. They are very similar. You have to be patient in order to be selective. It's one thing if you just refuse to ever swing until you have 2 strikes, but I don't think that's what anybody really means when they talk about patience. I think it's the other way around. If you are selective, then you automatically become patient. My favorite example is Sammy Sosa. He was the least patient hitter I had ever seen as a young player. He did not become an elite player until he realized, "hey, I can hit a thigh high, middle-in fast ball or a mistake slider". He didn't swing at anything other than that until he got 2 strikes. Because he became a selective hitter, he was patient.
  23. Wow! Didn't expect that. Quakers got back into the game in a big way, when we had 1 start apiece. Marquis puts up -1.5 (thanks mostly to Hermida, who I benched after a trade). Big offensive day helped combat my only bat that showed up last night, Justin Morneau.
  24. Y tu Wuertz?
  25. If the Cubs are gonna be sellers this year, they might as well blow it all up and start from scratch. As has been mentioned, Soriano is untradeable. Nobody is gonna take that contract. The only other offensive players with any value are Lee and Ramirez and if you trade either of them....the odds are you aren't gonna be contending anytime soon. Barrett and Zambrano are the only tradeable value on this team that could be traded without throwing away 2008.....and both are soon to be free agents.
