  1. My reason for not wanting Theriot to start has nothing to do with Neifi. It's because we can and should do better. The comparison to Neifi was just pointing out how pointless the "nearly a quarter of a season" claim was. if theriot was hitting .200 with a .600 ops now instead of .322 with a .910 you wouldn't be saying that it was pointless to not consider him as a starter because it is only 120 ab's. it's not theriot's fault that dusty wouldnt play him until most of the season was over. the fact is that he has performed spectacularly in the majors with the opportunity he's gotten. if the cubs dont consider him as a starter next year just because of his career minor leauge #'s they would be doing the team a big diservice imo.
  2. because he could die if he gets hit with a line drive?
  3. None of those guys compares with Wood if he's at his best. The only reason he should stay in the pen is if he's physically incapable of returning to the rotation. time will tell how good hill, veal & sean will be. wood hasnt been at his best since 2003 and even then he was only 14-11 with a 3.20 era. a good year but not exactly a great year. wood had (has?) great stuff but it never really translated to production on the mound.
  4. I'm all for trading a reliever if possible. Normally I wouldn't want the Cubs getting more free agent relievers. But at least with Wood, they wouldn't be giving up a draft pick to sign him. Plus, there's still the outside chance that after a year or two of bullpen work, he could still return to the rotation as an effective starter. Yes, I know the chances aren't great, but I think a low guarantee high incentives contract is worth that bet. i hope wood can be a joey nathan kind of guy. nathan couldnt stay healthy as a starter either but he's a lights out closer. with guys like hill, marshall, mateo veal & gahllager i think wood might be better off staying in the pen if he can keep healthy there.
  5. http://www.rrstar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060927/SPORTS/109270069/-1/RSS0101
  6. even if he doesnt keep up his current pace, he is still very vaulable imo. he bunts well, walks alot and steals bases. most likely he's not going to be able to sustain a .900 ops for a full season but i dont see why a .750+ would be out of the question. he would make a good leadoff guy if the cubs get a guy like mathews jr instead of resigning pierre. the cubs also have mike fontenot (who also gets on base alot and hits left handed) in iowa who can play 2b & 3b. i would rather see mike as a utility player & the riot as a starter.
  7. Howry? He's at least shown to be worth the money. Dempster and, to a lesser degree, Eyre are the ones really sucking away at the cash. Those tw and Novoa should be the ones to be moved. both eyre & howry were way overused this year imo. eyre was having a good year until he got injured. howry might bring the most value and with wuretz being so effective they might be able to get a very good player for him. the cubs also have haren who might also be a good setup guy.
  8. if they sign wood for the pen they should trade either dempster or howry (depending on if they want wood to close or set up) imo. dempster is going to be a big ? next year and i sure dont want him starting as has been suggested in some newspapers. i think he can bounce back if he gets regular work so perhaps they should trade howry & let wood set up. if dempster melts down again, wood can close & wuretz can set him up.
  9. if prior could be counted on to be healthy what about doing a z for crawford & kazimer trade? i'm sure it would never happen but would those 2 be worth zambrano?
  10. i think you have to take into account that sean is only 20 years old (he will be 21 in december). for him to have those kind of #'s in a & aa already speaks volumes about his talent. you are not talking about a 23 years old with 4 years of college ball under his belt.
  11. He's getting to around 90 pitches through 5 innings though. He's getting into a lot of jams because he gives up too many baserunners. It's not like he's cruising and getting pulled. thats true. he is throwing alot of pitches because of his control issues. although he does get into jams of his own making due to the walks, they are not hitting him very much either. his control will most likely get better next year being 2 years removed from his surgery. he is still only 30 and would fit well into the mix of hard throwing guys like z & prior (we can inly hope!). maybe a 1 year with a club option for 2008 would be appropriate.
  12. he's also a very nice guy from what i've seen of him. best of luck to him but i hope he doesnt pitch for the cubs again.
  13. He hasn't even had one quality start. Then I'll plead ignorance to what a "quality start" technically is. I figured he pulled them off the last 3 starts, but if I had to guess, they're not technically quality starts because of the amount of innings pitched each game, right? Well, despite that, I'd still call them quality starts, just in the "rest of the world" definition of the word "quality." Sure, I'd like to see him last longer and get a bit more oomph on his velocity, but he looked pretty damn good. He's looked pretty darn mediocre to me. He's a junkballer, and he's given up nearly as many walks as strikeouts. His WHIP is 1.58. And he's getting the majority of his outs in the air. He's doing it with mirrors right now. And he's not lasting past the 5th inning. People gave Wood and Prior a ton of crap for not lasting 7. I'm not against a low guarantee with high incentives for innings pitched. But if they offer him big money in those incentives, they better have a manager who is not afraid to pull him if he's pitching like garbage in those innings. he's not "lasting" more than 5 innings because baker is pulling him. as far being a junk baller and doing it with mirrors goes, it works for guys like arroyo & radke (when he was healthy). his walks are up because he doesnt have the control due to the limited innings he's pitched. if he can get his velocity back up to the low 90's, he can be very effective again imo.
  14. he's a major tool and has a habit of retiring too often but the man sure can pitch. a 2.35 era so far this year and a 1.87 last year. he could very easily have had 2 more cy youngs to add to his trophy case.
  15. the riot can lead off and murton can hit #2 if pierre isnt re-signed.
  16. I want Matt Murton to bat 2nd. I never want him to bunt. Ever. Never ever. it is a bit short sighted to say that any player should never bunt. bunting can be a big part of the game if used properly. i've seen puljos bunt and if he can do it so can murton (in the right situation).
  17. what about lofton on a 1 yr to go along with pagan? that said, i think that it's all up to pierre as to whether he wants to come back or not as hendry will almost certainly make him a multi year offer.
  18. i like: eyre ohman rapada/pignatello aardsma wuertz howry wood with marmol closing at iowa.
  19. and another- "Hendry tried to hold the Dodgers up for their very best prospect, and upon realizing that he couldn’t talk Los Angeles into giving up a huge piece of its future, Hendry adjusted in the final moments before the trade deadline and bettered his team by getting a major-league shortstop in return." http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/rozner.asp?id=212924
  20. "Colletti had been pursuing Maddux well before that, fending off Cubs general manager Jim Hendry’s attempts to acquire rookie outfielder Andre Ethier or future closer Jonathan Broxton in exchange for Maddux, 40." link: http://www.ocregister.com/ocregister/sports/abox/article_1229309.php
  21. That says it all. Was Hendry so loyal to Maddux that he just gave him away? Were there any truth to reports that the Dodgers were willing to give us Matt Kemp? I doubt it and I really hope that wasn't true. Right after the Maddux trade Hendry said the Dodgers had been offering 2 high level prospects. Were those names ever revealed? No, and according to numerous sources such an offer was never on the table. What numerous sources were those? Hendry himself went on WGN and said that he was offered 2 high level prospects, and there were also rumors about the Cubs getting a good prospect for Maddux prior to the deal. if i remember correctly i believe that hendry was asking for 2 high level prospects for maddux but had to settle for izturis because the dodgers woulnd't budge.
  22. no idea on his velocity but his line score looks pretty good. if he can pitch this well throwing 88-90, the cubs would be wise to sign him for next year. look at the year arroyo has had and he doesnt throw much harder 90 if at all.
  23. i would much rather see mateo starting for the cubs in 2007 than eaton. If Mateo can continued to perform like he has, I would as well. However I'm afraid he may be pitching over his head right now. he might well be but i like his approach. he throws strikes, moves the ball around and changes speeds. i also like the fact that he doesnt try to overthrow. he works around 88-91 but can get up to 94 when he needs to. i think between him and marshall, the cubs should be able to get a solid starter in 2007.
  24. two words the riot
  25. i would much rather see mateo starting for the cubs in 2007 than eaton.
