  1. If their goal is coming in 3rd or 4th at best, sure. just like hill is a aaaa pitcher, murton a 4th outfielder & theriot isnt a starting 2b. if the cubs went young in 2007 i think they could contend. i am tired of high priced free agents who either suck or get hurt. the future of the cubs is in the farm system not on the free agent list.
  2. i dont see why they would need miller next year anyway. z, prior, hill, marshall & mateo seems like a good rotation to me.
  3. i would rather see the cubs use theriot at 2nd base as he can be a freel/loretta type guy imo.
  4. hill supporter from day one here. never wanted to trade him (especially for dunn) or put him in the pen. a guy with such dominating minor leauge #'s had to come around some time sooner or later. funny how people a few days ago were arguing that it is critical for the cubs to get 2 or 3 starters better than him and that he should be a #5 starter next year. i agree it is yet to be determined how he will do when the leauge adjustes to him but he is #3 behind z & a healthy prior right now and barring a schmidt signing is very likey to stay there imo.
  5. i still think theriot should start at 2b next year.
  6. i would rather see the cubs resign pierre & keep murton in lf.
  7. imo, good & college football (or any kind of football for that matter) should never be used in the same sentence. how many more days until spring training again?
  8. As one of the ones fed up with Hill, even then I could concede that Hill had a pile of VERY impressive AAA numbers behind him. Cedeno had bad to OK numbers behind him while Theriot has OK to kinda good numbers behind him. Comparing them to Hill is incredibly inaccurate. Cedeno looked great in his limited starts at the end of last year, too. cedeno had an ops of .731 in 80 ab's compared to ryan's .861 in 87 ab's. as far as hill goes, how is it ok to ignore hill's minor leauge #'s and want to get rid of him when he struggled saying he is a AAAA pitcher and then put so much emphisis on theriot's minor leauge #'s?
  9. i think he is the best option in the system until ep is ready. alot of people on this board were stoked to get freel or loretta to play 2b and i think theriot can be at least as good as they are. i like what i've seen from theriot alot and think he can be better than just a utility player if given a shot. Based on what? His career numbers thus far aren't terribly better than Cedeno's. And who is to say that Patterson is even the answer down the line? Just because they're young doesn't automatically make them good. based on how he's played when he gets an opportunity to start. his instincts are much better than cedeno's imo.
  10. of course a few weeks ago people here were ready to give hill away for a bag of baseball's and lamenting that the cubs didnt trade him while he was "worth something". before that, murton was a 4th OF at best while he was slumping. i guess what they are doing now doesnt mean much either. i'm not saying theriot is the answer at 2b but he at least deserves a shot imo.

  12. The Sox have three guys with OPS of .900+, one of whom is a DH. The Cubs have 0. Even in 2005, the Cubs only had Lee and Ramirez with OPS above .900. The team needs to create run production across the board. Sticking with the lineup as majorly constructed, and maybe adding a Soriano at 2B wouldn't be enough to bring the runs up. so i guess barretts .885 & arma's .891 dont count because they are not .900 or more. if lee were healthy all year he would have posted over .900. that adds up to 3 potential .900's.
  13. Under the heading "NORTH SIDE BASEBALL." Frankly, I don't give two hoots how he's doing in Detroit. Actually, I do. I hope he does well and I wish him the best. I don't because then when they DFA him, Fat Hendry will resign him. I want him to be so awful no one picks up his contract and he never gets a job again. And you've got it: the reason Neifi is still notable and worthy of a thread is that baseball people still think that he deserves a spot on a major league roster. what people here think has zero effect on what happens in baseball in real life. there are probably people on this board that think they are better baseball players than nefi too.
  14. perhaps you should look at what some 1st place teams (oakland, cards, detroit) are trotting out there at 2b and then tell me why theriot could only be a starter for the yankee's at 2b. A team cannot trot out Pierre, Jones and Murton in the outfield, Izturis at SS and Theriot at 2nd base and be competitive. That's 5/8's of the starting offense. See the Cubs current standings as to why they can't. Could they if they put JD Drew, Soriano and Andruw Jones in the outfield next year? Sure. Will that happen? No. 2nd base is one of the easier spots to upgrade going into 2007, so it wouldn't be wise to pencil in what could be a useful and cheap utility player into that role. if they have lee, barrett, aram, a good starting staff & a good bullpen they can. again, look at the OF for oakland, st louis, & the twins and tell me why an of of murton, pierre ,& jones (ops's of .800+, .730+ & .800+) wouldn't be sufficiant? the white sox have dye (who is having an mvp type year) and 2 guys in pod's & anderson with ops's under .700 and they will win 90+ games (even with a very shaky starting staff & bullpen and uribe at ss-again under .700).
  15. perhaps you should look at what some 1st place teams (oakland, cards, detroit) are trotting out there at 2b and then tell me why theriot could only be a starter for the yankee's at 2b. Perhaps you should not put words in my mouth. I never said he could only be a starter for the Yankees. then what does this mean?
  16. Jim, I think its time to look at door #2. I agree that, if Prior was healthy, he could be better than Zambrano. I think some people have forgotten his comeback in 2005, before he was hit by that line drive. He hasn't been the same since, but if he starts next season healthy, he could be. Still, I don't think anyone is going to guarantee Prior will be productive next year. The problem is, at this point, that argument is academic. Whether or not you believe Prior is coming back, we still could use a good front of the rotation starter. If you write off Prior, we'd need someone to be the number two. We might need a number three also, but since there really aren't enough available impact pitchers to restock our rotation from the market, it doesn't make a difference. I say, they should see what Prior can do next year, and try to improve the rotation regardless. Hendry had better come up with 2 or 3 starters if he's going to fulfill his promise to "fix this thing" in the offseason. What two or three starters could be gotten from the market that would be a substantial improvement over Hill, Marshall, or Miller? That doesn't seem realistic. Hendry is going to have to get very lucky to turn the team around next year. are the marlins "lucky" this year? how about the twins & the tigers? other teams have gone young and are doing quite well this year. if a few of the young guys like hill, marshall, theriot & murton step up and have good seasons, i dont see why the cubs couldn't contend in 2007.

  18. I'm more afraid of the number of picks the Cubs will lose. Again. Well I guess that depends how they approach this offseason. If we try to make a bunch of FA signings in a weak attempt to win next year, we could lose some. I'd really be in favor of trying a quick "rebuild" where we accept some mediocracy next year in hopes of making a stronger effort in 2008. Also even if we did go after some FAs that cost us picks it could turn out like: Gain bottom 15 first rounder and supp. for Pierre Lose a 2nd and 3rd rounder for OF and P We have the same number of picks, just make the first three within the first 40ish picks ,instead of top 70-80. If the Cubs go into free agency looking to win next season, I don't see how Hendry will pass on re-signing Juan Pierre. even if they go the free agent route i think pierre will be offered a contract.
  19. i still like theriot & think he should get a shot at starting next year. 2 more big hits by him today.
  20. me too but not everyone here can say that: viewtopic.php?t=35361&start=45
  21. I think it's bit shortsighted to say Theriot has earned the 2B job next year. He's 2 years older than Ronny and has about the same OPS throughout his minor league career. I'm all for replacing Ronny with a better player, but Theriot has not earned the starting 2B job for next year. he fields well, runs well, hits well, bunts well, and has had some big clutch hits. i dont think cedeno's minor leauge #'s mean much the way he has played the past few months. aside from his very weak hitting, his supposedly very good defense has gone south and he's been brutal in the field. unless the cubs decide to go out and spend big $ on a free agent or make a trade for a 2b (which would make no sense imo with ep in iowa), i think theriot would be the best option (with perhaps fontent to compliment him) in 2007.
  22. its a very good chance imo that 2007 will start out with murton, pierre & jones in the of. if pie can be consistent in iowa, they can trade jones & put pie in rf. if this is the cubs strategy, pie will be switched to rf if/when pierre signs a contract. as far as cedeno, there is no way that he should be playing either 2b or ss for the cubs next year. when baker goes, hopefully the new manager will give theriot the 2b job to lose as he has earned it big time imo. maybe baker can take bynum with him when he leaves.
  23. if prior is healthy, who cares if he's better than z or not? they are both on the same team you know.
  24. mg420

    fox should try 3b imo.
  25. the answer, however bizzare it may be, lies at the other end of a toothpick somewhere in the cubs dugout.
