    I came to the conclusion today that I just can't tolerate Santo in the booth anymore. I have never liked him as a broadcaster, but I have been able to look past his occasional grunts and groans and give him a pass as the die-hard Cubs fan that he is. JonnyRed is right that the sighs and groans have increased to a point that the broadcast really is painful to listen to. The sad part is that Ron lives for the Cubs and I don't know if he could handle being let go, so the Cubs are really in a tough situation. They will probably give him the job as long as he wants it, and I can't really blame them for doing so, but the broadcast quality is suffering more than ever.

    He only had one good swing in the whole at bat and he was so far out in front that it really wasn't that good of a swing. I don't know what is wrong with him.

    Sure would have been nice if Soto or Soriano were in the 5 hole to take that at bat...

    I don't think his credentials were revoked, but it was threatened. Maybe it isn't the media's fault, when anything that can be construed as criticism results in threats from the team.

    You called it. They really grilled him there. It really is ridiculous how easily lead around the sports media is in a market this big. Bruce Levine is at the top of the list. Every time I hear or read his comments, I feel like I'm listening to one of the team's PR reps.

    You have absolutely no proof that that's the case. Yeah, I really doubt Ricketts is "oblivious". It's likely that he is just sitting back and observing from afar, but by no means does that make him oblivious.

    The real question is who are we sending to the 'pen? Andrew Cashner is probably the answer to both questions. Can he hit cleanup?

    That's a fine idea except that Tracy is playing at Iowa.

    Yup just horrible right now. Another 1-4 game... at least he's consistent. If he continues to chip away at this rate, he may get that average all the way up to .230 by the end of the season!

    I agree. I'm terrified of the midseason move where Hendry trades several top prospects for a mediocre veteran reliever.

    A lot of people (including myself) thought Lee was washed up at the beginning of last year, but he turned it around and had one of the best seasons of his career. He has been bad for most of this year, but I doubt that will last. Regardless of how he finishes the season though, the Cubs would be wise to shake Lee's hand at the end of the year and let him walk. That position is just screaming for a left-handed run producer.

    Bruce Levine seems to think that Cashner may be targeted for the bullpen "out of necessity". I'm sorry, but well-run organizations do not move their top starting pitcher prospects to the bullpen just to fill a hole. If if turns out that Cashner doesn't have the endurance or durability to be a Major League starter, that's fine, but at least give him a chance to succeed before throwing him into the bullpen.

    I guess it's time to fertilize the yard, catch up on DVR recordings, and check back in a couple hours for the score.

    Hopefully Wells can get it together, but if the Cubs are going to lose, at least do it with flying colors here in the first inning so I can reclaim the rest of my night.

    Cutting payroll for the sake of cutting payroll isn't the answer, but I wouldn't be opposed to it as part of a longer-term plan. Mixing and matching veteran players isn't working, so if the Cubs continue to play poorly the rest of the season then why not start a mini-rebuilding phase while waiting for some of the restrictive contracts to expire?

    It shouldn't take 95 losses for that to happen. A team with a $140 million payroll shouldn't struggle to play .500 baseball for 2 consecutive seasons. Anything short of a playoff berth should prompt a massive housecleaning. With that said, I would still rather see the Cubs play good baseball and sneak in by the Wild Card.
