    I would tend to agree. I doubt he goes after Pujols but I wouldn't be surprised if he did make a run at Fielder though given the hole at 1B right now and the payroll flexibility he'll have. Pujols past his prime (not that he is, yet) is better than Prince in his prime. So Pujols at 37 will be better than Prince at 32 or 33? How can you possibly know that? I'd take my chances with the latter. I'd take my chances with the former. Pujols starts as a MUCH better player and is extremely well conditioned. Prince is a slob and has had one season as good as Pujols's worst. Pujols has more of an injury history and I think you have to at least consider the possibility of performance-enhancing drugs. Obviously he has never been linked to anything and he may very well be 100% clean, but what if he gets the huge deal and suddenly decides to stop doing something he was doing before? Anyway, I think I'm taking this thread way off topic, so I'll stop there!

His comments would rule out Pujols moreso than Fielder, but my initial impression is that Epstein will stay away from both of them. I always forget how young Fielder is.

    So between Epstein's comments about possibly putting more money into player development initially (which would be a good thing), his statement about players' primes and paying for future performance, I get the impression that the Cubs will not be big players in the Pujols or Fielder derby... and I'm fine with that.

    I may be overreacting off of a very small sample size, but I really hope the Cubs stay away from C.J. Wilson at the price he will demand.

    I remember buying a framed poster with the 2004 pitching staff (minus Clement) on it thinking it would be something special that would hang in my house for years to come. I'm not sure I even have the poster anymore, but if I do it is buried in my storage shed along with my laminated Mark Prior "Chicago Hope or Hype" Baseball Weekly cover. Such high expectations and disappointing memories...

    Quade is obviously not a long-term solution at manager, so what would be the point of letting him "ride out" the contract? After investing this much money into a new front office, I can't imagine the Cubs would go into the season with a lame duck manager who was clearly over his head. I trust Epstein to hire the right guy, whoever that may be. That sure is a good feeling after years of simply hoping to avoid disaster with every Hendry move.

    I could easily see Josh Byrnes being named GM this year, and next year having Theo be named President if this does happen. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what the plan is now, Theo being named President and hiring Byrnes to be "GM." I'd get behind this. Absolutely. That's why I think Boston holds no leverage. They don't want him back and the Cubs don't have to get him this year. As much as I do want Epstein, I'm coming around to this idea. If the Red Sox aren't going to be reasonable, call their bluff. They clearly want to get rid of the guy, so why should Ricketts cave and give them any of the Cubs' top prospects?

    The only thing I heard on the radio was that negotations for compensation really didn't start until this morning and that it is Ricketts negotiating with Boston and not Randy Bush as previously mentioned.

    Quade seems smart enough to realize that he is in over his head and that his days are numbered as a major league manager, so he might be open to returning to a minor league job with the Cubs. I wouldn't be opposed to someone from the Cubs at least approaching him about it before letting him go altogether.

    And now the White Sox are interviewing Mark Parent for bench coach? Are you kidding me? If they want to go the Ventura route and pair him with an experienced bench coach, I could understand that, but putting a manager with no experience together with a guy who has never managed above AA... This just reeks of stupidity, arrogance, or both.
