Actually, according to studies by Bill James, batting order as a whole makes little or no difference. As long as you don't bat your worst hitters at the top or middle of the order you can mix the other players around randomly and the total runs created comes out almost exactly the same. Tom Tango's studies show that a mild, but significant, gain can be made by using the optimal lineup. I don't think Lou has the cajones to bat Lee 2nd, though.
