    Honestly, I would feel fine going into the season if we replaced Theriot with Cedeno, and told Dempster he was staying in the pen and gave Marshall the #5 spot. I still wouldn't mind going after another starter, but I'd be confident enough to deal with it.

    My feelings also, pretty much. It sucks, but what can you do? Hey, anyone want my Prior road jersey? What size is it? How funky is it? Alright, I see I'm creating a windstorm. I'll send it to Laura to use as a future prize on NSBB. It's an XL and probably only worn 3 times. I hope it's a dance contest. I'll win that jersey!

    I'm not getting into debates with lawyers, as I treasure my soul. However, I will say this and be off. Over the course of a 162 game baseball season, a quantitative approach has significantly more value than a qualitative approach. Most people simply do not have the mental capacity to temper selective perception and cognitive dissonance over such a long and involved timespan.

    Honestly saying numbers tell the whole story just boggles my mind. I understand the points that these guys are making but they simply do not tell the whole story. No, they don't. But they are a lot more effective than selective perception. I'm not trying to be rude here, as I do respect what you do. But this is a problem that every single person has. Some of us have taken to relying upon the numbers upon realizing that our memories are not flawless. I know I picked up on it after seeing some numbers about Mark Grace and his "clutch" ability. I had always thought he was nothing too special in those situations, but I saw a study that ranked him as one of the best of the last few decades. All I would do was dwell on the few times he had buggered up when I was watching, though. Again, I respect you a lot. But I think your opinion of Mark Prior has become so jaded that you're attributing characteristics to him that simply are not applicable.

    In 2003, Prior ranked #2 in QS% among pitchers with a minimum of 100 IP... .01 points behind Kevin Brown. Either he had his best stuff every day, or he managed to deal with it pretty damn well when he didn't, and he started getting hit.

    great stuff, really. you think the reason his era with men on base is higher than his era with the bases empty is because...there's men on base?? that's like saying he gives up more grand slams when the bases are loaded than he does when the bases are empty or he gives up more stolen bases when there's guys on base. average against with men on base: .228 average against with the bases empty: .239 Numbers don't tell the whole story. They tell more of it than simple selective perception.

    Damn. If I knew he was that cheap, I would have actually supported him over Theriot. ...and I think I just felt my soul leave my body.

    Even if that's why they did take it for injury recovery, does that make it less of a baseball sin? I don't care why they took it. It helped them "perform"...whether it was for strength or for injury recovery. I think it's a lesser evil, personally. I can understand doing whatever it takes to be able to get back to your previous levels when they have been unfairly ripped away from you do to some freak occurance. Creating a new level for yourself at the expense of others is a bit more selfish.

Maybe MurtonFan is 95CT and you help cover the gap by being worth 10CT yourself. :lol:

    Yeah, that's the list that's been floating around all morning. I'm not sure I buy it, considering how it's not really in alphabetical order, and you've got Troy Glaus showing up twice there.

    Not in the least. MILB testing is much more stringent than MLB testing, and besides, most of the sources for the investigation would have no connection to him. We aren't really getting a list updated through the end of last year...

    Wow... I suppose this is support for my "start Cedeno" and "we need a new backup C" arguments I'd been making.

    Theriot looked good defensively when he got his hands on the ball. But because his arm is so weak, he was playing in a few steps, which comprimised his range considerably. All in all, he was below average with the glove, simply because he could never get to the ball. Everett shouldn't have to compete, he'd be hands-down a much better option than Theriot. Yes, he should have to compete. If he is much better than Theriot (and I think he is) it would be evident from the competition. Would it? I'm not comfortable choosing a starting player based off a few spring training games. Obviously, if Everett lost a bunch of range and it showed from April through May, we can consider going in another direction... but Theriot isn't close enough right now to warrant leaving it up to chance.

    Ok, first off, let's throw out that ridiculous mental toughness shtick. Nobody in here is out on the mound with him, so let's not pretend we know what's going on. Secondly, how do you figure those comparisons besides a lefty with a good curve? At any rate, Hill's value is likely going to go up as his strikeout rate catches up to his minor league rate. Third, of our main 4 starters (Z, Lilly, Hill, and Marquis), Hill threw the next-to-least number of pitches per plate appearance. Only Marquis threw fewer per at bat. And Finally, Hill had a significantly lower than league average BB/9. I just can't figure out your logic behind these thoughts.

    To be fair, Everett might be the single player in the game with a glove good enough to cover up for his offense... at least among people with truly putrid bats.
