  1. Does yesterday's game not count?
  2. Well, I believe the original plan for Lee was to start at Peoria before his Tommy John surgery. Since Kim got $1.2 million, I think he probably will be advanced as Rhee if he shows up healthy. It wouldn't be a big disappointment if he started at Boise but I don't think Mesa is likely since no Korean kid has yet to start there (Rhee debuted at Peoria, Lee, Ha, Jung and Na debuted at Boise). Maybe this is worth noting, maybe it isn't, but I seem to recall that the cubs liked to make sure there were a few other people who spoke korean when deciding where to place everybody, so that the new guy would have an easier time adjusting.
  3. The short answer is that we have no idea what his repeatable skills are, since his production changes so radically year to year. Sometimes he hits for average, sometimes he doesn't. Sometimes he hits for power, sometimes he doesn't. Hell, sometimes he walks, sometimes he doesn't.
  4. Weirdly enough, 1B is really hard to get a good read on with defensive metrics. I mean, we can figure out how good somebody is at fielding grounders, pop flys, and line shots around the bag... but being able to scoop throws out of the dirt? That's tougher. And I haven't seen enough of Dunn's glovework at 1B to feel comfortable speculating.
  5. Cubs are only 2.5 games back of Arizona for the #3 pick right now.
  6. Tons of factors. Age, bench players, injuries, etc... Also worth noting is that Defensive Efficiency is simply the reverse of batting average on balls in play. It just keeps track of whether or not the play was made... not whether it should have been made. So it is possible the opposing teams had a disproportionate number of times where they simply managed to "hit em where they aint," so to speak. I would caution against chalking the whole thing up to bad luck though, we've definitely gotten a bit worse in the field the last few years. UZR would take into account the factors listed in your first line. It would also taken into account whether we've gotten worse in the field from '09 to '10. I'm aware. I was just responding to (what I interpreted to be) mojo asking how our defensive efficiency could have tanked so quickly. Now that I'm rereading it, it seems he's wondering about the discrepancy between UZR and DE.

  8. I dont feel like calculating anything right now, but don't forget that most calculations of replacement level include average defense now.
  9. The top of our list is in a bit of flux for the moment. There are legitimate arguments for B. Jackson, Lee, Archer, McNutt, Vitters, and Lake to show up pretty much anywhere in our top 6.
  10. I absolutely would love to see an ace. I just don't want to pay huge money for an old one.
  11. Depend on him for what, exactly?
  12. If you really feel compelled to move an OF to 1B sulley, Colvin should be the one you're looking at. Note that in no way do I endorse such a move.
  13. We'd be better off signing Branyan for 1B next year than moving Sori, whose defensive skillset is a disaster in waiting at 1B.
  14. I still think this would have been a fun game. Babe Ruth This one is too easy. Career OPS in wins - 1.332, losses - .959. That's nearly a 400 point spread. What a choke artist.
  15. His career OPS against the Cubs (which we know is the only clutch stat that matters) is nearly 100 points lower than his normal OPS. Oh, and for his career, which inning does he have the worst performance in? Oh yeah, the 9th. When the pressure is really on, that's when Pujols falls apart.
  16. I still think this would have been a fun game.
  17. This. This is a salary dump, where the money hopefully goes back into the system. That's about it.
  18. But he was an All Star... We've had Omar Infante. He just never played a game for us.
  19. Okay, here's a challenge for you. Name a player that I can't cherry pick stats for to show they wilt under pressure.
  20. This would be comical if it weren't so sad.
  21. I know it's generally frowned upon to send big leaguers down there, but I'll be real interested to see if they let cashner head down there to get some extra innings under his belt. If not, we can be pretty certain he wont be getting a real starter's workload next year, and his fate is probably sealed.
  22. Confirmation bias. For more information about this phenomena, talk to CubinNY. Not because he's a psychologist, just because all of his posts are extreme examples of it.
  23. They should be able to. They shouldn't be required to pay him another penny (at least for the rest of this year) when he can't play due to his own stupidity. Aint gonna happen. Players Union wont allow it. Even Denny Neagle, who hadn't pitched a game in two years due to arm trouble, got a buyout on his remaining contract (thanks to a grievance from the union) and he was busted for a DUI and soliciting oral sex from this http://www.deadspin.com/sports/neaglehooker.jpg
  24. In this thread, poster who decided already he hates Derrek Lee makes up flimsy rationalizations to back up his opinion. thread>
