  1. because garza is good and wells isn't? Haha, I'm glad we settled that. It's a really good thing you have a sense of humor.
  2. Id be surprised if they were wanting starting pitching as the centerpiece. I'd bet something more like Lee, one of Castillo/Chirinos, and one of Vitters, JJax, or Carpenter.
  3. Similar production. Garza has better raw stuff and pitched against tougher lineups... Wells is cheaper and under club control for longer. Wells also has much less risk for a variety of reasons, including having fewer miles on his arm and not having the same makeup concerns as Garza. I'd like to see a mechanics breakdown to see who that favors. Regardless, a straight swap would be an ill-advised and very shortsighted move at best. Including prospects with Wells would be incredibly dumb. That said, I do like Garza quite a bit and would love to see him become a Cub... But only if the price is right.
  4. I'm okay with us having some interest. He may well be an upgrade over our 2B situation if they're just giving him away. But if it would require us giving up any prospects of note or paying any of his contract, pass.
  5. WAR isn't that dependent on luck. I'd prefer if they used xFIP instead of FIP, but still...
  6. Well, it is only Chris Davis, I don't expect someone like Rosenthal to have his ears to the ground about every Chris Davis rumbling. Neither do I. But I would hope a beat writer in Chicago or Arlington might have something more than a blind guess that the two gms maybe talked about one player... maybe.
  7. It occurs to me that the only reports I've seen linking the Cubs to Davis are one beat writer speculating we might have interest and one blog rumor. Is there anything more concrete out there?
  8. True, but if we can get him on a one year deal, Pena could make himself a pretty valuable trade chip near the deadline. I vote for Pena and Davis.
  9. Why? Sell me on it...because based on the numbers he doesn't look like a particularly good player. Decent power but no patience, he's been a negative with the glove in all 3 seasons he's been on the Rangers, and negative offensive numers 2 of the 3 years. He spent most of the year in the minors this year and didn't make the postseason roster for them this year. And now he's gonna the starting 1B for the Cubs? The upside is Davis has strong minor league performance, has some MLB success, is still only 25 this May, and is supposedly mobile/athletic to make a solid 1B defensively. Also, he'd come at a pittance compared to other options. He's not as good a buy low option as some others like Ka'aihue, but personally I like him better than say, Pena. Davis and Pena aren't exactly exclusive. No matter what we end up doing, I wouldn't mind grabbing Davis just to stash in Iowa.
  10. Well just to keep things interesting, I'll make a bet that it doesn't matter. If the difference in WAR between Adam Dunn and whoever is playing 1B for the Cubs would have covered the gap to put us in the playoffs, feel free to ban me as well.
  11. Can anyone explain why Martin was cut? He seemed like he was going to be a mainstay in the Dodgers lineup. His OPS dropped sharply the past two years, but he still seemed a good player. Too expensive already.
  12. Gonzalez has some secondary skills that suggest he'll age much more gracefully than Adam Dunn. Why are patience and power not going to age "gracefully?" Adam Dunn simply has a lot of risk factors: - He is at the age where a player would normally start to decline. - He is a big man, which tends to make players more susceptible to back and leg injuries. - He already has a very poor contact rate. - His strikeout rate was the highest of his career in 2010. - His walk rate was the lowest of his career in 2010. - His average distance on home runs has declined in 3 straight years, and is the 2nd lowest it's been since hittracker started keeping track in 2005. - His batting average, on base percentage, and slugging percentage the last two seasons were boosted by a BABIP 30 points higher than his career average. Even just a BABIP correction could be nasty. Now imagine a drop in bat speed either due to natural causes or an injury. That's downright scary.
  13. I don't really see the point with Baker, Dewitt, and Barney around. Barney doesn't hit at all, and Baker can't hit righties. If Ramirez goes down for an extended time, we don't any backups that can even really approach replacement level production at 3B on a daily basis.
  14. Gonzalez has some secondary skills that suggest he'll age much more gracefully than Adam Dunn.
  15. I would encourage everybody to make a donation to JDRF today in honor of Ron.
  16. I'd love to get Russell Martin as a backup catcher, but that's probably pretty unlikely. Edwin Encarnacion on the other hand, may be willing to go as low as a minor league deal. I'd love to stash him at Iowa in case of a Ramirez injury. At some point, it'd be nice to be able to call up an actual 3B instead of playing a backup 2B out of position.
  17. For the rest of my life, I don't think there will be a time I turn on a cubs radio broadcast and dont miss him. I don't know what else to say but that.
  18. The thought had definitely occurred to me that Hendry may be planning on trading Castillo or Chirinos.
  19. I wouldn't have had much of a problem with $14 mil per, but the fact it took 4 years makes me glad we didn't sign him. Hopefully this convinces the front office to go with a full rebuild this offseason instead of signing Lance Berkman and Bobby Jenks and struggling to 78 wins.
  20. I like Baker. He would be a great bench player for a team with a manager who realizes he should never face a righty. I can't remember if Quade was that smart, though.
  21. It was more, "if we take on their awful contract, we won't have to give up anything for Jake Fox, who might bring a bit of power to this very punchless offense." Of course, Jake Fox didn't work out. But despite what the media portrayed, Aaron Miles was not the A's real target.
  22. Your list is pretty much the main ones. The backup catcher competition is going to be pretty fierce. Guyer will be auditioning for 4th or 5th OF (maybe even platoon partner for Colvin). Assuming we move Fukudome this offseason, Jackson will get an extended look with an eye towards perhaps pushing Colvin to the bench in the summer, or taking over in CF after we trade Byrd (if we're out of the race.) The starting rotation could be something to keep an eye on as well. Dempster and Z are pretty much the only locks. Wells, Gorz, and Silva have the lead on the last 3 spots but I'm surely going to be keeping an eye on a few of our young pitchers who could force their way in. Archer supposedly will get a real shot. Hopefully Cashner gets a shot in the rotation as well. The front office has made it perfectly clear that we will give Samardzija as many chances as humanly possible as well. Jay Jackson could be a darkhorse candidate for fifth starter or even a bullpen gig... Chris Carpenter too, but it's more likely his would be a bullpen gig.
  23. I like Dunn quite a bit, but let's not forget that his profile is not that of a player who is likely to age gracefully. Signing him with an eye towards competing in 2013 is a very risky move, and not one that I would endorse.
