  1. Random thought: How pathetic is the SEC out-of-conference scheduling? Look at this year or any year in the past. One example; Georgia Tech's win over Vandy Tuesday Night marked the first SEC opponent other than Georgia to play at Tech's floor in the last 27 years. Conversely, Tech has played 27 games at various SEC home floors during that time.

  3. Simply put, the Bears dominated this game. However, the officiating left a lot to be desired; particularly on the Vasher "interception." From the NFL Rulebook: Jenkins caught the ball, established possession of the ball, and was moving forward as he was about to get blasted at the 10-yd line. At that point, he can only lose the ball as a fumble. He hit the ground and the ball popped up to Vasher. Of course, the ground can't cause a fumble, so the play should have been dead with the Falcons having the ball 1st and goal. Who knows what happens from there. The way things were going, it's unlikely that they come up with 2 TD's.
  4. The season is on the line for the Birds on Sunday Night. I think the Falcons will play their best game of the season. The Falcons are the best in the NFL running the ball and that is the only area where the Bears aren't at the top of the league defensively. The key to me is 3rd down conversions. The Bears are the best in the NFL defensively on 3rd down; the Falcons are 2nd best offensively on 3rd down. Something has to give here on Sunday Night. I like the Falcons 13-10.
  5. I can't figure out why the Cubs can't get the concept of two disruptive LH bats at the top of the order. Whoever hits 2nd for this club will not be as patient as Todd Walker. Additionally, they probably won't hit LH and take advantage of the hole on the right side of the infield that should be available 250 times/season if Pierre comes through with a .360 OBP. The only guy I can think of to fill the void in the 2nd spot is Matt Murton. He actually looks to drive the ball to the opposite field. We all know how highly unlikely that it with Dusty at the helm.
  6. I wouldn't be so sure about that. He would have Zambrano and Prior --- collective .288 OBP --- hitting in front of him. Given Neifi's DP/PA ratio; that's 3 DP's right there. Go Cubs.
  7. Here is the existing state of affairs in the ACC if your school is not located in the Tobaccer belt: Georgia Tech (23) went 7-4/5-3, beating two Top Ten opponents on the road. They go to the Emerald Bowl against the 4th place team in the Mtn West: Utah. Boston College (19) went 8-3/5-3, beating Clemson, Virginia, and NC State in conference. They will go to Boise and play a road Bowl Game against Boise State on the smurf field. Then, the travesty really begins: NC State 6-5/3-5 plays at home in North Carolina at the Car Bowl against S. Florida. Their fans could hitchhike to the game if they wanted to. Virginia 6-5/3-5 plays just a few hours away in Nashville at the Music City Bowl against Minnesota --- a quality Big Ten opponent.
  8. How about the ultra-creative Michigan State student section and their "Little Dickey" cheer during the GT / MSU game ? Not only did he drop 24 and 10 on MSU, I thought he should have whipped it out upon recognition of the cheer. Then again, he might have been forced to fight off the two male students who decided to kiss each other with ESPN cameras on them during a timeout. While the Iz-zone may be lacking in general intelligence and personal hygiene; they are not lacking in promiscuous practices.
  9. Terence Moore is the same clown who said Georgia-Georgia Tech is not a sporting rivalrly. Unless Furman Bisher writes it, nothing in the AJC is worth reading.
  10. The ACC takes the Challenge for the 7th straight season. This is a down year for the ACC relative to the past two or three years. Indiana was close, but Duke's defense and ball pressure is superb. Killingsworth has every move imaginable on the offense of end of the floor. He will continue to open up the perimeter for Indiana and if they shoot a respectable percentage from 3; they are going to be right there in March. As for Duke, they've won all 7 Challenge games - 6 on the road. That's quite an accomplishment. Despite the loss, Georgia Tech's play stunned me. They play all Soph's and the only Jr who plays > 20 min/game was originally a walk-on player. The guys hung in there and had a final shot against arguably the best team in the Big Ten on State's floor. They can be a tournament team if they continue to move the ball like they did Wednesday night. Perimeter defense and ball pressure have to improve.
  11. Yep. I think tonight is a good chance for IU to get a real resume-maker of a win. This is one of those that can make the difference come seeding and location placement in the brackets. Duke lost DeMarcus Nelson last week for at least 2 months. That is a big loss for their backcourt defense. If Williams gets into foul trouble, Duke has no chance.
  12. Currently, the Challenge is tied up at 3 per side. Will the Big Eleven win the Challenge for the first time in its seven year run; or will the ACC continue its domination (minus Boston College) ? Here are tonight's matchups (and my prediction): Wednesday, Nov. 30 7:00 p.m. ESPN Georgia Tech at Michigan State 7:30 p.m. ESPN2 Minnesota at Maryland 8:00 p.m. ESPNU Northwestern at Virginia 9:00 p.m. ESPN Duke at Indiana 9:30 p.m. ESPN2 N.C. State at Iowa -Georgia Tech isn't very good right now and it will take a while to get back to competing night in and night out with the big teams after losing all 5 starters. Michigan State takes this game by 15-20+ points (MSU) -The Terps are too tough at home (MD) -UVA is impossible to predict, but I will take them at home (UVA) -Indiana is primed to take down the Dookies. I think they win this game; maybe in overtime (IU) -State comes in with a strong defense; Iowa is well tested for this early in the season. (Iowa) I give the ACC two locks tonight, one lock for the Big Eleven, and two swing games. I think the Big Eleven finally ends their embarrasing run against the ACC and pulls it out 6-5.

  14. Game of the Week. Saturday Night for a national ABC audience. Calvin can start making his case for the 2006 Heisman. !
  15. Maybe they should suit Vasher up at HB ? He already has a number in the 30's. The Bears are the NFL equivalent of the White Sox.
  16. I attended this game on my visit to Chicago in August '01. It was incredible. I was in the bleachers for that one. The next day, or two days later, I forget, but it was about 110 degrees and Felix Heredia gave up a bomb to Mike Hampton. Sammy hit 3 solo HR's that day. I think I had a new found appreciation for OBP after that game. The Cubs lost 14-5.
  17. I watch because Dan Jiggetts is the man: http://chicago.comcastsportsnet.com/images/talent/dan-j.jpg
  18. Sorry, I underestimated Neifi's wealth. He will be making in excess of $5m the next two seasons. The Cubs have committed at least $11m to Glendon Rusch and Neifi Perez in the 2006 and 2007 seasons. [expletive] them.
  19. Neifi is a great fit for a club with a mediocre defensive SS who you want to remove from the game in the 7th or 8th inning. His value skyrockets defensively at his position and you insert it a hitter who is marginally above average offensively (at SS in the NL) for 2 innings. However, if the SS ends up being Rafael Furcal, this acquisition makes little sense. The manager, especially Dusty Baker, is not going to take Furcal out of the game, ever. That leaves Neifi Perez as a backup second baseman. At second base, Perez is below the league average (-2). Perez is certainly an upgrade over Walker if used as a defensive replacement at the position. Thus, if Walker is not traded and Cedeno is not ready to play the position, you can make the case for Perez on the club (if used in this capacity). The end result is you have a player who played at his Colorado numbers last season and is being rewarded with a two year contract for a year of good performance. The club is committing two years (and probably $3m+) to a player who may not be that much better overall than Ronny Cedeno (~600k).
  20. http://sportsmed.starwave.com/i/magazine/new/spelling.jpg And to Raisin as well. !
  21. On the topic, thus far in 2005, ACC "officials" have been the worst in all of college football: Shoddy ACC Officiating 50% of all reviewed plays have been overturned.
  22. The Giants have re-signed Jeff Fassero for the 2006 season. He will turn 44 next year. The dollar amount was not mentioned.
  23. Regardless of whether or not the Cubs upgrade elsewhere, Murton is the type of player you want give a job to. If you take what the Cubs did in LF last season with and without Murton, it's amazing. In his 144 pa with the Cubs in LF, he was worth 19 more runs than the rest of the clowns the Cubs trotted out there. On defense, he was better as well. He was worth 1 more run at his position than the others. It's hard to find anyone at his salary level who will give you the production at the plate and not hurt you on defense. The only case the Cubs could ever make for keeping Burnitz is that he's above average defensively in RF. That's not enough when evaluating a RF. It's too painful to discuss Patterson's production, rather, negative production.
  24. the DaVinci of our times... !
  25. Personally I thought it was rather interesting to see how white the stands were in Houston. After years of seeing Yankees crowds, and two days of Comiskey crowds, that Houston crowd looked odd. Has there ever been a larger collection of 43 year old white people, outside a Republican convention that is? I doubt there's racism against players in that organization. But I wouldn't doubt if they weighed heavily the value of marketing a white star to the fan base. Ever been to a game at the Metrodome? Yes, but that's Minneapolis we're talking about, not Houston. The population of Houston is 17% black and 30% hispanic. Minneapolis is no more than 5% of either race. I've seen much more racially diverse crowds at Fenway in Boston; a city which is much less diverse than Houston.
