  1. A surprisingly good addition to the Cubs coaching staff. It's nice to hear the Cubs have gone after someone who's promoted success in the right areas and has a track record of success. During Perry's tenure in Seattle, the M's were either 1 or 2 in walks. Of course, you still have to get players who are zone/discipline hitters at the plate.
  2. Big games in the ACC title race on the Atlantic side. Wake Forest hasn't won in Tallahassee since 1959 and Maryland has a Miami team at home who's trying to avoid a bowl on the blue turf. This brings up an interesting point though. If Georgia Tech were say, Miami, and Wake Forest were say, Florida State, would people call the ACC down this year ? GT is 7-2, a 4 pt loss at home to the Irish and a road loss at night in Clemson . They have wins over VT, MD (leading the Atlantic), and Miami. Tech is ranked 18th. Say that was Miami's resume, Tech is probably ranked 12th or 13th just based on name. Take Wake Forest, 8-1, who's only loss came to Clemson who they had the lead on in the 4th qtr. They have wins at Ole Miss, Cuse, and BC. Wake Forest is ranked 19th. That team is 8 minutes from being undefeated. Say that was Free Shoes U's resume, Wake is probably ranked 8th or 9th. Bowl games and rivalry games in November will settle the argument, but I don't think it's a down year for the ACC. Rather, it's a down year for the name teams in the conference.
  3. If you want your team to get a BCS at-large spot, you are cheering for Georgia Tech at this point to win out. Currently GT is 20th in the BCS and Boise is 14th. Tennessee (11), BC (15), and CU (19) lost yesterday. BSU may not move this week and could get leap frogged by LSU. So, that puts BSU still at 14th, maybe 13th and GT moves up to 17th. Tech has gimmies with UNC and Duke which would put them at 9-2. The big one comes against Georgia. If Tech wins that road game, they are 10-2 and knocking on the door of the Top 10, neck and neck with Boise State. If they win the ACC title game, they jump ahead of Boise State. At least, that's how I see it right now. This of course assumes BSU wins out...
  4. This is a big win for UK, 1st time in many years against UGA. If they can beat Vandy next week, UK will be in the Music or Indy Bowl. Vandy and UK are pretty close as far as talent and coaching, but they also have UL-Monroe and UT (loss). Congrats to UK. Georgia has now dropped both games against the bottom of the SEC. I'm standing by my statement that Tech will be stunned in Athens by a crap Georgia team.
  5. I agree with you that the Orange Bowl will go after a big time program from the SEC. I disagree that the ACC Champ will not be a big draw, unless it is BC. If it is Clemson, they travel as well as any school in America. If it is Georgia Tech, they will sell a ton of tickets. Tech had 35,000 people at that game. The fan base has grown significantly since then.
  6. I'd love to see it happen. Yep, and then watch GT go in to Athens 9-2, ranked around #10, and lose. That's ok though, it'll be good practice for the ACC Championship Game and hopefully a BCS berth...
  7. awesome. who's the other non-white player that they refer to? Is it Victorino, or am I missing one? Ethier.
  8. Gameday likes the South. This makes 4 weeks in a row they've been to a southern campus and they started the season at Georgia Tech.
  9. Miami/GT is Saturday afternoon at 3:30 on ABC. A win for Georgia Tech puts them in a great position to play for the ACC title (Tech finishes with NC State, UNC, and Duke).
  10. that should be the cubs' slogan. Jackie Moore was Piniella's bench coach in Cincinatti from 1990-92. He is 67 years old and is coaching minor league baseball. I think he's the next bench coach of the Cubs. The Cubs will probably try to defrost Ted as the next hitting coach.
  11. I think that's alot worse than this current situation It's a lot more direct than what he said in regards to Piniella. The comments on Friday were moreso implied. Both statements are inappropriate, and in seeing the quote on Green again, I'm surprised he wasn't let go at that time. It may have been a warning for a first offense and Friday's comments got him the axe.
  12. Is it a three horse race now for the Heisman ? Unfortunately Peterson goes down for the season and Wolfe did nothing against a respectable rushing defense. It's probably Troy Smith's race to lose, but it seems now down to Smith, Calvin Johnson, and Brady Quinn. I might be biased, but I think Johnson and Smith have really put up the most impressive numbers. Smith seems to never miss, always throws it to the right place (2 INT all year against 17 TD's). Johnson is 5th in the nation at 559 yards and leads in TD's. He's done this in an offense with a mediocre QB and one other reciever. He has over half the team's total receiving yards. Johnson also has 100+ yd games against ND, VT, and MD.
  13. I thought the Cubs went backwards when they hired Baker. If they hire Piniella, they are headed back into the dark ages. At this point, Piniella is a terrible choice for manager. What else is Hendry going to copy next ? Lets see, White Sox, oh they won the World Series with some good speed and intangibles. Lets do that! Ah, the Tigers, they were horrible and brought it an old veteran manager. Lets do that too! Yay!
  14. Promoting within. When's the last time the Cubs did that ? It makes sense and I think Listach has a good chance to be added as the 1st base coach next season.
  15. Manager: Brad Mills Hitting Coach: Ron Jackson Pitching Coach: Rich Kranitz (or Rick Petersen - doubtful) 1st Base Coach: Bob Dernier 3rd Base Coach: Pat Listach Bench Coach: Mike Quade
  16. The Cubs just need to hit better with runners in scoring position.
  17. This will be the first year since 1975 that I will not see a Cubs game live somewhere. A new streak will start next year - hopefully with a three stadium tour. Count me the same since I believe 1993. I feel like I wasted $149 on Extra Innings as well. I'm an addict, so I'll buy in again next year.
  18. He did, because this ensures that his club won't lose 100 games and remember, this is all about Dusty:
  19. Team Buddiga, once again, 2nd place in the East. I feel like Boston before 2004.
  20. They do look impressive, don't they? BTW, thx for posting the run-downs each week. I really enjoy it. Saves me from scrolling through my guide a little bit---and I probably would have missed that Northwestern game tonight if you hadn't posted it (yes, it's sad.....I'm a NW fan). Tech's season really turns next week at VT. If the Jackets can win that game, I think they'll win the Coastal Division. They get Miami at home and the toughest ACC road game is at Clemson, who is in the Atlantic Division. VT will be 4-0 and will have played nobody when they face GT next weekend. Should be a great game.
  21. Making contact isn't an accomplishment. The 2006 Chicago Cubs are some of the best contact makers in the league, if not the best. And they still suck. That's not ultimate. The Cubs are now 3rd in the NL in batting average, last in the NL in OBP (by a lot), and consequently last in the NL in runs scored. They have walked 200 fewer times than the Reds and Phillies. One thing Ryan Theriot does do is walk. He walks at nearly double the rate of his Cub teammates. The simple fact that he will draw walks and can run the bases correctly puts him above a lot of players battling for spots next season.
  22. tough to win when your opponent is pursuing the week scoring record. Buddiga had a decent week, just the wrong week to face abuck's mashers.
  23. All I'm gonna say is that is one of the horses. I guess Theriot isn't putting up enough 5-5's these days.
  24. ah, i'm glad they took him out, but i could have used the QS. A repeat performance tonight. Cabrera goes 5 2/3, removed with a QS on the line. He was just over 100 pitches.
  25. oml! thanks to TP for sending Pena up there with a scouting report. saves 7 or 8 pts for Buddiga!
