  1. soriano is an improvement over walker, but not a big one. it's not big enough to justify trading good prospects for him, and paying him 3 times more. also, soriano is a butcher in the field, which brings down his value further. the cubs' number one weakness offensively is OBP, getting soriano doesn't address that at all. Not a big improvement? 20-30 more runs and 20-30 more rbi's??? Do you think his extra 12-15 errors make up for, say, 25 extra runs every year? i don't care about his rbi's, soriano's always been in the middle of the order with a great lineup in both texas and new york. also, he's made 19-23 errors every year since 2001, and he's already got 15 this year. he's making $7.5 million, walker is making $2.5 million. soriano will cost top prospects, keeping walker will cost nothing. the cubs shouldn't be focusing on soriano, i'm sorry. you have to address what your team needs, and the cubs do not need soriano. i would rather have matt lawton than soriano. I'll second that. We have thump in the line up with Lee, Ramirez, Burnitz and Nomar when he gets back. I would rather have another guy who can get on base. Especially if the thumper will cost too much. And if the rumors of Walker, Mitre, Welly and someone else is true, Texas can keep Soriano.
  2. I'll have to warn you not to turn the channel to TBS. Their playing great ever since they benched has beens like Brian Jordan and Raul Mondesi for the likes of Kelly Johnson, Ryan Langerhans and Jeff Francoeur. :) Let's see two are batting .232 and .244 with .326 obs and one is .406 with no walks. Let's check in one month. Jordan's OPS this year .627 Mondesi's OPS this year .630 Francouer's OPS this year 1.333 Johnson's OPS this yer .720 Langerhans OPS this year .732 __________________________________ Hollandsworth's OPS this year .694 Murton's OPS this year 1.071

  4. Yes it does, it affects depth perception and makes the ball appear strobe light like. It was the first time I have seen Murton take a hack at a pitch but he was probably wanting to hit a 6 run homer too. Notice: it was the first time you've seen him swing like that, as have I. But the fact it was a pressure situation is what irks me. Everyone is on their feet. He RARELY swings at a first pitch without shadows. So shadows come and the 7-2 breaking ball looks like a fastball right down the shoot? Come on. And you have branded a guy who had one bat at bat while the shadows affected his view as a guy who completely folds under pressure. One at bat. Isn't that just a bit harsh?
  5. I've seen a lot of great players in my day look like fools at the plate once that shadow crosses home plate.
  6. No one ever said anything about selling the farm to get Lawton. We certainly didn't sell the farm to get Aramis or Randall Simon from Pitt. Why would Lawton cost us the farm? Pittsburgh will want something good in return. Fair enough.
  7. So, one at bat where the shadows obviously affect the vision of the hitter is enough for you to determine that Murton folds under pressure?
  8. And you've seen Murton play how many times? To me, he looks like a doubles machine, DOES have good speed and has great control of the strike zone. But, I'm basing my opinion more on stats since I haven't actually seen him play other than his short stint with the Cubs.
  9. Why would a guy with tremendous OBP against right handed pitching, has speed and can lead off be the LAST thing we need. Look at Lawton's OBP and OPS against right handed pitching and tell me he's not a significant upgrade to Hollandsworth. Lawton has a 100 point advantage over Hollandsworth in OPS. Also, it puts Hollandsworth on the bench where he has been much more effective. While I'd rather see Dunn out there in LF, I wouldn't consider Lawton the LAST thing we need.
  10. Did you see where the shadows were when he lost his "excellent grasp of the strike zone"? They were directly in front of him. If you've watched enough baseball games at Wrigley, you know that when the shadows cross home plate, it gets very tough on ANY hitter. I don't think it's very fair to say he loses it under pressure, considering the circumstances.
  11. I wouldn't be too happy if they don't make any deals. If the price is too high for Dunn, Soriano, Manny, Huff or anyone else, see what it will take to get Lawton. Lawton's OBP would be a nice fit at the top of the order. But, if this team expects to go anywhere with Hollandsworth getting the bulk of playing time in left field, I'll be very disappointed if they did nothing and finished short of a wild card.
  12. He certainly doesn't appear to have many smarts. It makes you wonder how a guy like that ever got a front office job in the first place. They don't have what it takes to win. They could piece out what they have and build a strong team a year or two down the road. Felipe Lopez, Wily Mo Pena and Edwin Encarnacion are good building blocks. The types of guys they could get for Dunn, Kearns and Griffey or Casey could help them build on that.
  13. If we can pull a Pujols out of our system, I'll quit worrying about it. That's a pretty big score, IMHO. But, it's only one player. And I don't think the Cardinals really knew what they were getting when they signed him. I think it is important to develop from within. However, I don't think it's the be all, end all. If prospects like Bobby Hill and Matt Bruback can be included in a deal that nets Aramis Ramirez, I call it a major "SCORE". If Hee Seop Choi can be the centerpiece in the deal that lands Derrek Lee, "SCORE". If Brendan Harris and Justin Jones can net Nomar, "SCORE". While we don't currently have an everyday starter from the system, we have 3 guys listed above that we acquired in trade for guys from our system. How many of the Cardinals starting rotation came from their farm system? Matt Morris? The Cubs have Wood, Prior, Zambrano, Hill, Maddux and Mitre. In the pen, we have more guys who are from the farm. I think it's more important to develop pitching from the farm than position players. Both would be nice, but for some reason, pitching seems to be what the Cubs organization is better at developing.
  14. How many of the Cardinals starting 8 came through their system? Pujols.
  15. Why don't we just trade Dusty for Tracy and call it good?
  16. I unlocked this thread for about 10 seconds when 1908 wasn't looking. :^o :D
  17. Good point. Other names have been getting tossed around (Moyer, Millwood, etc..), but there really hasn't been much happening. A lot of those deals may end up being after the deadline waiver deals.
  18. Miguel Olivo for minor leaguer Daniel Mateo. Padres have traded for 2 catchers in the last 2 days. Ross and Olivo. Weird. Source is Matt Vasgersian, TV voice of the Padres during the game.
  19. Feel free to add to the discussion in the Soriano thread that is already open. I'm locking this one up.
  20. I kind of don't understand why San Diego would trade Giles. They already traded Nevin, lost Hernandez to surgery and have Peavy, Williams, Lawrence, Eaton, Astacio and Park for the rotation. They need offense, not pitching.
  21. not on topic for this thread but I like it when a new thread is created when something changes....personally wading through the drivel of 22 pages of posts to find an update makes this site alot less friendly. seriously, we could have traded for dunn and I wouldn't know cause its a pain in the a^$ to page through 26 pages of people arguing over irrelevant stuff. And we can certainly understand your preference. However, nothing has happened. How many different threads should we have open about the same discussion when there is nothing new to report?
  22. She was in LA with Leno yesterday. But......
  23. If the Cubs don't score this inning, it will go down as one of the ugliest innings I have seen this season. And there have been plenty of bad ones. Why on Earth was Lee stealing 3rd with no one out and Aramis up?
  24. If it makes anyone feel any better about the Yanks getting Embree, he gave up 2 runs while only facing two guys in his first stint as a Yankee.
