  1. What? They want a good pitcher when there are so many mediocre one's available? What is wrong with them?
  2. The only one is Jack Wilson, and they still think he's the face of the franchise (which tells you a lot about the body). Bay is the face of that franchise. And, no, Jones for Duke won't happen. If the Reds are offering a power hitting OF, it makes you wonder just it might be. This could be interesting... The Pirates aren't a team that spends 10m on an outfielder. They are usually guilty of trading them away, actually. Jones for Dukes probably won't happen. But, I wouldn't rule out Jones to Pittsburgh for someone.
  3. Again, Per Rotoworld: The Cardinals are targeting free agent Jason Schmidt, though they may not go beyond three years to sign him. "There's a question of how far we go, but we're going," GM Walt Jocketty said. "We'd like to have him." Agent Randy Hendricks said Schmidt was receptive to St. Louis, and that the team's reluctance to go beyond three years wouldn't be much of a problem. However, it appears likely that Schmidt will get $60 million over four years from some team, perhaps the Cubs or the Dodgers. Source: Cardinals.mlb.com This is a direct quote. Last time I looked, St. Louis was not on the west coast or anywhere near Seattle. Sure, it's St. Louis rather than Chicago. But, I've yet to see the Cubs get blown off as quickly as Milwaukee did. Therefore, I'm not willing to assume Schmidt has no interest in the money the Cubs seem to have readily available to hand out.
  4. History is why people are panicing. We were told not to panic when Chicago started outbidding Pittsburgh for Jeromy Burnitz. The Cubs signed him. We were told not to panic about the possibility of trading prospects for a 1 year rental, mediocre talent Juan Pierre. The Cubs got him. The list is long. Instead of reading Lilly and Meche rumors all day long, we want to read Schmidt rumors all day long. When we don't see Schmidt rumors, we panic.
  5. Jones is right up Pittsburgh's alley. He's affordable and he's the lefty corner outfield bat they desire. Nady moves to 1b and Pittsburgh's offense is not too shabby.
  6. Just what the doctor ordered. That deal would afford 20m for 2 years for Schmidt. Marmol for Church, get some bench help and call it an offseason.
  7. Yeah, with the way these contracts are going, I'd almost rather the Cubs work a deal with the Yankees for Pavano or Wright with the Yankees picking up part of the tab. And what are the Blue Jays thinking? They can't afford to keep Vernon Wells, but they have enough to attempt to sign Lilly and Meche?
  8. And let's sign Drew and Bonds to add to that list. Never wanted Bonds. But, I absolutely would have loved Drew on this team. The only games missed by Drew in the last 3 years is a broken finger from a HBP.
  9. Please do? Per Rotoworld: The Brewers kicked the tires on free agent Jason Schmidt, but they got the idea he wasn't interested in playing in Milwaukee. Schmidt would prefer to stay on the West Coast, though he is believed to be considering the Cubs and Cardinals. Source: Brewers.mlb.com
  10. On the DL this week for the Cubs: Prior, Wood, Miller, Mulder
  11. If you look at the #s, "those geniuses" on this board were actually correct. In Hill's 1st stint with the Cubs last year, he had 15 walks in 19 innings. He was sent back down, and they tried a different approach with him. When he came back up in late July, after one shaky outing, he had 21 walks in 76 innings. Its not necessarily about scouting, sometimes its about coaching. Now only if we had a pitching coach at the Major League level. Problem being is those geniuses dont take into account that most players have to struggle at the major league level before they are going to be successful. Sadly we here in Cub nation by and large dont want to go thru the struggles with young players. I think Marmol is going to be a solid pitcher once he gets his control down.[/quote] me too but i think his future is in the pen as a closer as opposed to starting. A lot of guys can become solid pitchers once they get their control down. Unfortunately, it's much easier said than done. And a lot of those guys never will get their control down. I like what I saw of Marmol, but there is a full stable of arms in the system that are not overly high on any other teams radar. If Marmol gets it done for Church, I wouldn't bat an eyelash.
  12. Maybe the Best guy doesn't want to come here? I can dig up quotes where Schmidt has stated that he has interest in St. Louis and Chicago. When I hear that Schmidt turned down 2 years/36m, then I'll believe he just didn't want to be here. Lilly and Meche are lucky to be 8m a year pitchers. The offers for those guys are getting closer to 11m. Instead of giving these guys 3m, add it on to Schmidt's deal and see if he still wants to pitch on the West Coast. If I don't hear that Hendry offered 18m, I'll be convinced he didn't do enough to get him. If St. Louis gets him for between 15m-18m, I'll guarantee you I'll be thoroughly pissed.
  13. Yeah, I think Jones is the one who wants out and Hendry is doing his best to accomodate him. However, Hendry's best tends to leave a lot to be desired.
  14. Tampa wants cheap front line starters. Not guys that are about to get expensive. They would have zero interest in Jennings. I don't think Colorado is enamored with Jacque Jones. I believe Hendry is the one attempting to get them to be enamored with Jacque. And since the Rockies are looking for a CF, why wouldn't they just make a straight up trade with the Rays for Baldelli?
  15. This is so silly. If you are going to overpay for someone, overpay for the best guy out there. Not the mediocre guy.
  16. I agree. And I've actually been parading this site preaching the necessity of Lugo. I'm about as anti-Izturis as it gets. If the Cubs overpaid to get Lugo, I wouldn't have been upset. But, I can't blame them for not overpaying, either. I can blame Hendry for not recognizing the importance of OBP in the line up. I can blame him for viewing Izturis as the answer at SS. I can blame him for expressing his interest in Lugo to play CF, rather than the position we actually need him. It basically comes down to Hendry not understanding how to build a baseball team, and he's proving it even more this offseason.
  17. And how much more does Jones' value increase if the Cubs stuck him out there in CF in 2007 and he does a good job?
  18. Well put. Nothing wrong with letting teams know that someone is available in trade, but if you go all Corey Patterson on 'em and attempt to throw him in on every deal, you end up with Nate Spears. Atlanta is playing it cool with Giles. Colorado is playing it cool with Jennings. That's how Hendry should be handling Jones.
  19. Great idea, but don't you think Novoa should be used to acquire someone like ARod or Tejada? Drats! Foiled again.....
  20. Marmol please. We can even throw in Novoa to help replace all those great relievers they parted with to the Reds for Kearns and Lopez.
  21. Ditto. Damn good GM they have there in Boston. Yeah, great move there trading Hanley Ramirez and Edgar Renteria so you can throw $9M a year at a guy that is worse than both of them. Colletti is also quite the genius giving up Joel Guzman and Sergio Pedroza so Lugo could sit on the bench during the stretch run last year. That really paid off. Good points.
  22. Seems like just one about to happen: Meh. So, who will Hendry be targeting next for CF since Lugo is off the market?
  23. Meanwhile...... Hendry went to bed way early tonight from the headache he got from being on the merry-go-round too long.
  24. Have there been any trades today? Seems like the winter meetings have turned into a free for all with agents working all sides of the room to get the best deal possible for their client, leaving little room for trades.
  25. Well, let's hope it's no more than what Washburn got, since that's what Lilly said he wanted.
