  1. Both chronically injured players and injury prone players have both missed time in the past due to injuries, but that's where the similarities end. Someone who's chronically injured, as others have said, simply means he has had more than his share of bad luck. Someone who's injury prone has had past injuries that are medically related, and that are not believed to be fixed entirely. If you're trying to choose between signing a chronically injured player and an injury prone one, the choice is easy: get the guy who is not more likely to get hurt in the future, the guy whose past injuries don't suggest a recurring problem (i.e. Griffey's hamstring, I believe, is what usually shuts him down). To say that they're both "not available to play" is true, but an oversimplification. Sorry, I can't help it. I love definitional debate
  2. After seeing this thread's title was anyone else afraid that Dusty had named John Mabry starter in RF and simultaneously gave him the dumbest nickname in pro sports?
  3. True but he was a "big name" pickup designed to rally their fan base while also distracting from the upstart Nationals. Oh come on....you don't think Pierre can rally the Cubs fan base, and overshadow the Jim Thome acquisition. Ok...eough sarcasm. Tejada could . . .
  4. To be fair, Mr. Miles doesn't say the Cubs are the "frontrunner," he says to expect them to be first in line. Meaning he predicts that they will be one of the first teams to inquire - put that way, it's not all that strong a statement. But, FWIW, I do consider the Cubs as having a good shot. IF Hendry is willing to part with some very good prospects.
  5. In other words, they're not satisfied yet. Question is, how satisfied to do they need to be to pull the trigger? Who else is making FLA offers? I read the Yanks don't want a bidding war (attn: Hell just froze over), so whose potential offer are we competing with? Personally, I like the above trade. I think Mitre is little more than bait. I'm not a stats guy, but I've always thought Mitre was a AAAA pitcher who showed just enough potential just often enough to make him attractive to the right team. To sub Williams in for Mitre in the deal would give me second thoughts, but I'd still probably go for it.
  6. I don't get it. Why should someone feel obligated to leave at their peak? For that matter, who's to say when someone has reached their peak and when they've already passed it. Not only have many players (the Big Unit, Bonds and Clemens being perfect examples) shown that a peak can be reached or extended into the 40's, but it's kind of a personal issue, too. Just because someone's no longer great at what they do should they feel obligated to turn down massive amounts of money to stop playing a game they love? Clemens I'll agree with; he may have two years left . . . What bugs me though is how this year (and last year too, IIRC) he wouldn't decide until late into the offseason. I hate the Astros as much as the next guy, but I really sympathize with the position he's putting them in.
  7. How is he different from John Mabry. Assuming Hendry wants to win more than 8 games this year, he'll find a RF, moving Mabry to the bench. Correct me if I'm wrong, but their roles seem similar and not necessary to stock up on.
  8. yeah, ever since Rusch was brought back for $2.5m I've assumed Williams is on his way out. And after Howry and Eyre were signed I can almost guarentee it. That's kinda scary, though. Williams seems like pretty good trade bait, and when you force yourself into a corner where you need to get rid of him, you somewhat "wasting" him. Hopefully Hendry has a specific plan for what he wants in return rather than just deciding to trade him away.
  9. Besides Sosa, who else has he ran out of town? hehe, Chip and Steve
  10. Thanks for making the change. No harm done. Speak for yourself, my Abreu jersey is already on the way
  11.  I hated seeing Harris go, but at least he helped us get Murton. That's true. It'd be easy to cry over Harris being exchanged for Nomar . . . but, as it has turned out, Murton has been the "centerpiece" of that deal.
  12. :) That took me a sec, but nice. Can anyone round up some info on a correlation between Hank Aaron winners and MVP winners?
  13. How dare the Got Milk? people turn the ugly steroid scandal into something potentially beneficial and good!
  14. And that's why it's awesome to have Bruce Miles on this board - speculative thread killer. Thanks Bruce :D Instead of "distingushed guest" under his name (which he is), I think it would be awesome to have "threadkiller." Either one is cool. Thanks, Bruce. Once again you set us straight. hehe, I've been called a threadkiller, too, so it must have multiple meanings :D ^ - - - just watch, this is the last post of the thread . . .
  15. Wait, what???? What do you call Zambrano, Prior, and Wood in 2003? Come on! [sarcastically picking on details] What? We didn't have Andy Pettitte, Roy Oswalt and Roger Clemens. We had Zambrano, Prior, and Wood [/sarcastically picking on details] Seriously, though, it's hard not to pick the Astro's to win it all at this point. Those pitchers are exactly what you want in a series.
  16. Patterson for Hanley Ramirez. pfft! No chance. Patterson for Manny, straight up. :D
  17. The whole article can be read here: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/4984978 If the Yankees offered ARod for Wood and Williams I think Hendry would have that deal done in a second. (I know, I know, assuming Wood waives the no trade clause) Even though it just opens the door to more fairly baseless assumptions: would Kerry waive his clause to go to the Yanks? I think that's the key question in this scenario. I think Hendry is most likely to let him go than Prior, Z, or Aram. We'd be robbing the Yankees blind if they agreed to Wood and Williams straight-up. Unless we took on the entire contract.
  18. It's too bad that this FA class of gms isn't coming out next year, when the Trib' is more likely to be taking applications.
  19. I think you have to explore a lot of trade options before you go with that OF. I agree, It wouldn't suprise me if JH did go that route. Any likely targets come to mind? [naive]Manny, Manny, Manny![/naive]
  20. I'm I the only one who thinks this Sun Sentinal writer just didn't notice that the staff was all signed to a one year deal. It seemed to me like that guarenteed Dusty his job this year, too. I would put the odds of the Tribune bringing back Dusty's staff, and then firing Dusty at 10,000:1
  21. If they're not, please ship him to Chicago ASAP. I'll personally pay for Dusty's plane ticket out and Scioscia's ticket in. We'll split the price of the tickets 50/50! 33/33/34 (I'll even do the 34!) I would agree that Bobby Cox is generally well-liked. I don't think the lack of rings hurts his reputation too bad.
  22. Is the name calling really necessary? What has the man done to you? What has he donw period? Maybe you don't respect the (underrated, IMO) roled of bench coach, but that was a personal attack. And, jokingly said or not, there's no call for it. I think that's a pretty good point. If we all feel alright in blaming Rothschild for not advancing (or even mantaining) levels of success for Prior, Z and Wood, then it's probably worth considering that Kranitz has done the same for our AAAA guys. Although other variables like potential and ML-readiness of these guys is important to consider, too.
  23. Pretty pessimistic about Wood, huh? I don't belileve the Cubs are thinking that way (though I agree with you). I think they'll look at the rotation you have listed minus rusch and plus wood, and assume that everything will work out for the best. And maybe it will, but probably it won't. I'm torn on overspending for Furcal and Giles. I think Furcal has a ton of potential, most of which he's already proven. I'd say he's a fairly sure bet to give us good production - and a bonified leadoff man would do wonders ahead of Lee/Ramirez. As for Giles, I'm a little nervous. I do believe that he would perform well, and that he could be a key sparkplug in '06. But it's the potential contract that has me scared. I hope JH plays it gutsy (not $8M-for-Nomar gutsy; I'm talkin' calculated-risk gutsy). Because we need a shakeup.
  24. First of all, you can plug in around $330,000 believe for Murton, since it's the league minimum. And what do you mean by "Aramis is overpaid." Would him playing the last month (which he could have if we were in the race) have evened him out a bit?
  25. This is actually a pretty good site to visit I believe there was a similar pool for how many times Kim would get kidnapped. Good stuff :D
