  1. Fine, I'm requesting that the entire thread be deleted. Taking your ball and going home?
  2. FWIW, I don't like misleading titles anyway. But back on topic - I've just had a feeling that Lou Piniella would become another Dusty in the fans' eyes. He seems like the kind of old-fashioned guy that would be a detriment to a modern baseball team.
  3. The Tigers are winning with a pitching staff that is what the Cubs staff was supposed to be post 2003, and with guys who murder the ball and get on base. Having Leyland demand "guts" and "heart" means nothing. Going into this season, IIRC he had a sub .500 winning percentage. Personally, I agree with the logic behind what you're saying - it's the players that make the most significant difference in the standings. But it doesn't really matter. Frankly, it could be the renewed sense of guts and heart in the clubhouse that is causing the players to play so well. It's a circular argument that I try to care too much about. Whoever manages the Cubs should get them to play fundamental baseball, hit and pitch competently, make logical strategic decisions and, ultimately, look respectable. Motivator or not; Players' Manager or not; guts and heart or not.
  4. I've got a feeling that when I head to Wrigley for a game in early August, I'll be rooting for Lou Piniella's Chicago Cubs. I don't know why I feel that, or how it makes me feel . . . not too good, I think.
  5. He is Dusty's boss. If he has a plan, he should not let one of his subordinates get in the way of its execution. Dusty and execution in the same post. Just reword it now. :D Good point though. :) To paraphrase some old ball coach, "How do you feel about the team's execution today?" The reply, "I'd be in favor of it."
  6. Between Pagan, Murton, Nevin, and Bynum (when he returns) the corners are covered. I don't necessarily think the Yankees would want Juan Pierre and Jacque Jones. We might be stuck with Pierre which would only leave right field to be filled. Even if we had to fill center as well, it wouldn't be a problem to do that. I don't really follow the AL, but isn't Matsui more-or-less done for the year? They could use a semi-quality bat to replace him.
  7. The talk around here is that Bill Callahan can get 10 wins out of the Huskers thisyear. Assuming they avoid flat-out embarassing loses to conference rivals (see Tex. Tech and Kansas), unlike recent years, I see most Husker fans being very satisfied. Bring on the season!
  8. If they ever come out with a Caffiene Free version they'll have to use some tiny-ass font.
  9. I have a screencap, but it didn't turn out well, it's all blurry. I'll post it if you really want. I'd actually like to see it too, regardless of quality. Thanks!
  10. Is there a rule against placing a player on the DL who isn't hurt? Don't know how anyone could prove they are not hurt, but just wondering. I do believe there is a rule against putting a player on the DL who isn't hurt, and there's no way to disprove a back injury. Here's what Kerry Wood said after going to the DL on June 9: I don't know if it's against the rules (you'd sure think so), but nothing came of this "phantom injury" DL stint, so I'm sure nothing will come of Glendon's either.
  11. His success in Philly (W-L record, at least) is iffy. But I wouldn't mind hard-nosed and fundamentally sound for a change.
  12. This is a good point - we aren't a team like Florida or Montreal in the past who needed to sell simply to make budget. But the last point you make is important, too. If we have someone who can fit into another team's '06 Playoff Plan, now's the time to hear offers.
  13. Being in Lincoln, I saw/heard much of Gordon as he dominated local schools with Lincoln High and later college teams with the Huskers. His bat is the real deal, and his defense is more than adequate.
  14. Define play. Standing on the field waiting for the bounces to go your way. Awesome.
  15. I don't know why some here can't take a fun question and just have fun with it. Its a good point and I would have thought we were well in the race....sucks that all the other stuff happened. Agreed. We've gotten some pretty good years (so far) out of players we had question marks or flat-out doubts about. It's too bad nearly everything else went wrong, but we have had some bright spots in the lineup and it's too bad they've been "wasted" on this team.
  16. Can't say I remember him, but I wish him well. What a sad situation for him and his family.
  17. You can't assume a player cares or tries to get better? That should be the assumption at all times for all athletes unless it can be proved untrue. Why? Because we call them "professionals"? That's a label we brandish on all of these guys without regard for whether they earn it and/or display the qualities the term implies. We certainly don't assume that in other walks of life, why should we do it for athletes? I don't think goony's saying we are to assume that every player cares intensely and sees as their life's goal to succeed in baseball. He's just saying that they deserve the Benefit of the Doubt. If this is what he's saying, I completely agree.
  18. So what do you all think of the execution of this team? I'd be in favor of it.
  19. I believe a suspended player must remain on the 25-man, so any call up might be a little hard to maneuver. I suppose they will do it, but we'll be shorthanded somewhere, most likely.
  20. hmmm . . . an interesting idea what was the context of the comment? I couldn't find it on the Tribune's online page.
