  1. Seems like it to me, too, and I like it! Wish there was some way ballclubs could relieve themselves of at least part of the burden of that player's salary should he be DFA'ed, like the NFL. Having to pay all minus the league minimum can be quite a pain at times. Not sure to go about it, though. This could take the discussion to an off-topic tanget, but: I think that's the problem with the NFL, not something that other sports should add. I think it's unfair to the teams and the players the way NFL contracts work (or the way I seem to think they work). It's the fact that the money's not guarenteed that leads to players holding out, which is an awful thing to happen in sports.
  2. Probably cuz they're black
  3. I think all the pre-deadline talk of the cubs adding griffey was strictly a "push for the playoffs" move. In other words - even though I think it would be an interesting pickup - I don't see the Cubs even talking to Cincy about him . . .
  4. Stability is huge in success, IMO. And the Cubs clearly do need it. But I don't think that should be a reason we keep Baker around. As the Dusty-bashers will attest, Baker's just not a good fit for this team - in both philosophy and abilty. So, I say, we need to form a new stabilty around a better fitting coaching staff.
  5. Unless there is a direct quote by Jim Hendry saying, "I wouldn't trade Rich Hill for Adam Dunn straight up," there's really no point to this thread. I wouldn't say that. Why not have an interesting debate stemming from speculation? That's what 90% of the Transactions forum is, anyway. EDIT: I would agree though, that we shouldn't blame Hendry for not doing the deal, since we don't know if it was ever out there.
  6. Good idea. Hendry can put you in charge of finding an available great defensive catcher who also has an above average bat and a salary of $4,000,000 or less. So just because Barrett is pretty good compared to others, his weaknesses should be ignored. I get what you're saying - I don't think we could find a realistic "upgrade" either. But if defense is the flaw is Barrett's game, who's to say it couldn't be worked on? I agree that Barrett should work on his defense, but as CPatterson20 said, BobRoss said we could use an upgrade. That's what I was responding to. Right, I certainly agree with that. While Barrett will frustrate me sometimes behind the plate, there isn't another catcher out there I would want, for what he gives us for the price we pay him.

  8. After remembering that Scott Rolen won the ROY the year after just barely not qualifying, I'd say eligibity is about 130 ABs. In other words, I doubt Murton gets the ABs (or the chance to up his numbers) this year to qualify.
  9. I've always assumed it's the same eligibility to top a leaderboard. Something like games x 3
  10. Who you want to replace him with for $1 million?? If Nomar stays healthy, Cedeno's not going to get many at-bats. Might as well let him see regular pitching in Iowa. Frese, maybe Fontenot, and they both cost the minimum. I almost would support anyone replacing Neifi. Frankly, just for the sake of not being frustrated about Neifi. . .
  11. That's pretty illuminating stuff. Where did you get the list for everyone's OPS since April? That's definitely something I'd like to have access to. It's not for everyone, as I said above. I wish I had access to that too. I guess I could separate for the other 39 players, but I think the point gets across that without his monstrous April, Neifi is one of the worst SS in the game. Cmon April wasn't an irrelevant month. He helped win games in April. Can't just throw out Neifi's first 68 at bats. You may want to throw out Neifi's numbers in August too btw. .783 ops. I will never complain about the April that Neifi gave us (especially after I re-checked those stats tonight). But if taking out a player's best month makes his year look as pitiful as id does for Neifi, I don't think there's a lot of good you can say about that player. Neifi defenders are quick to speculate how many games Neifi helped us win in April with .368/.403/.559/.962, but by the same logic, he must have helped us lose many more games May-Jumy with something near a .240/.250/.345/.580 My point is, I'm glad Neifi was such a great replacement in April, but it's a long season and pitchers either figured him out, or he just lost it.
  12. Oh, man! Hahahaha! This isn't actually real, is it? HA! I don't mean to further pick on Dusty (or do I?), but picture Joe Torre or Bobby Cox telling that story in those words. I can't see it either.
  13. Agreed. Nomar coming to 80% of his form would be a terrific boost, but I think Corey is the more important player. He provides power, defense and speed. Nomar would be a boost more to Lee and Aramis' task of driving in runs, wheras if Corey got going, it would be like having 2 leadoff guys in the lineup. I think todays lineup (freak luck of it's success withstanding) is a good reason to hop that Nomar and Corey can get it together. We do not want Macias and Neifi hitting 1-2.
  14. That part you say about Aramis and Dlee is sadly very true. They are easily meeting (and with Lee, really exceeding) any expectation we could have had. But, as fans, of a (otherwise) weak team, we continue to expect more and more out of them. I remember thinking earlier this year, "Man, it's been like three days since Derrek a home run." A moment later I smiled, feeling pretty silly. :)
  15. And as much as I'd like to see it happen, Dusty getting fired is not going to help the Cubs chances this year, as small as they may be. It's too late for a "shake-up." If we're going to do it, it'll be done with Dusty. Ironically, if it did happen, Dusty would certainly return next year.
  16. It really is. I would equate it to seeing Jermaine Dye's leg break or Kendall's ankle injury - a couple incidents I only cared to see once.
  17. Great post - perfect balance of hope and realistic pessimism. I think you're pretty much right on in all of these assumptions. I have the most doubts about #s 6, and 8. 6: because, hey, we're the Cubs! 8: because, hey, he's Dusty! Really though, here's to a resurgent month and a half \:D/
  18. Darn, I vaguely remember seeing that thread now. Sorry for the redundancy.
  19. Is this sarcasm? It seems many quality OBP guys are to be had for a decent salary, it's more a problem with a GM's and Manager's appraisal of these players. I think it's actually the high average/high power guys that (rightly or wrongly) will command more in the market. So . . . if it is sarcasm, then I agree :).
  20. I don't how much of that is Larry's fault, and I don't know how much other teams struggle with the same things. But everything you've listed you has *definitely* been a problem for us all year.
  21. Which one? The tongue-in-cheek one, the relevant one, or your own?
  22. Despite the end of the losing streak today, I think some of use still have some frustration to vent. I think the healing of the season can be helped by neatly organizing the reasons so many of us dislike Mr. Baker - in his own words. Consider the now-famous quote about disliking batting patience, the recent contradictions in the suntimes article, his undying loyalty to his 'dudes,' not to mention the ultra-common nonsensical ramblings. (I would compile this myself, but I'm no good at research. Besides, maybe it could be a fun waste of time :))
  23. I'm slowly maturing as a baseball fan, from a naive HR and AVG watcher to a more OPS and OPS slant. But I'm still pretty far from understanding alot of it. I'm (somehow) struggling to convince my brother how bad Neifi Perez and Jose Macias and Dusty Baker are :). So my request is, what websites, books, articles, etc . . . are must-reads to understanding complicated baseball stats? I'm not willing to pay for much right off the bat, but if I find this to be necessary, I eventually may relent. I would really appreciate any helpful input.
  24. There's no correlation between how much someone gets paid and how hard they will work. Money has nothing to do with it. Baseball is a job. It's a good job most of the time and it pays well but make no mistake; it's a job from the moment someone pays you to do it. That means you have to do it even when you don't want to. No matter who you are or what you do, no matter how much you love your job there are going to be days when you'd rather stay home. I've had quite a few jobs. These guys have basically had just one: baseball. I think it would be very hard to stay focused each and every day. Exactly. And while some people could probably name a real-world equivalent, most "companies" are never "out of it" halfway through the year. Motivation's a tricky thing.
