  1. I understand the lighthearted nature of the promotion, and on their face, they're harmless. However, Cubs fans in particular are seen as "who cares about the game as long as the beer is flowing." This does nothing to change that stereotype. uh, but the beer is flowing - what's the problem? ;)
  2. Thats a pretty ridiculous comment. In so many ways. It most certainly is not. This is the type of po-dunk, two horse town stuff you would see relating to a minor league team, not a major league franchise. And name one other pro sports franchise where this sort of thing would happen. Even though the Red Sox and White Sox had streaks approaching 100 years, they didn't go down the road of bringing goats to the ballpark, blowing up a baseball(!!) and now trying to get a seance-type dinner for one of the most obscure "curses" I've ever heard of. Whether or not another team/city would do this is debatable - you may be right. BUt the negative spin you're putting on it . . . I just don't see it. Ideally, people would look at it as fun silliness, no more no less. If people from "other cities" are failing to be lighthearted about it, you're in the same boat as they are.
  3. dang, looks like I'll have to look into Extra Innings again.
  4. Good idea. No one wants to consider Z leaving yet, but if we think he will, this might work. Maybe I'm overvaluing Carlos, but I'd guess it wouldn't take much more than him to land A-rod. But like I said, I'd rather not think about losing Zambrano.
  5. Yep, I have no problem with that starting rotation. Hope it works out and everyong gets/stays healthy. a bit off-topic: where you at in Nebraska, twiggy? don't see many other nebraskans around the board.
  6. articles on cubs.com aren't necessarily the best source for speculation . . .
  7. By the sounds of it, it's Texas or the highway. How has Sammy done Spring Training wise in his career? Well, back when he was good he would miss the first few days. I don't think he'll do the prima donna thing this time around. I think he already has. He waited til late December to start training for his comeback. He's still too cocky, he thinks he can turn on the old magic with a minimal effort. In Sammy's position any humble human being would have trained his ass off all summer and played winter ball. I thought I remember hearing really early in the offseason that he was actually working out in the DR.

  9. Best post of the thread. :D
  10. i judge hendry by wins. and in that regard, he's bad. and if you judge him by win per dollar, he's the worst. Fair enough. really? so dusty was a good manager in '03 and '04, a below average one in '05 and, finally, a bad one in '06? Jim Hendry makes the moves. These moves should be evaluated separately from the wins/losses that result. Whether or not he is a good GM is based on his decision-making BEFORE the fact, not after. So why judge what happens after? Who's responsible for the Manager? Everything aside from the size of the payroll is under the umbrella of the GM. That certainly hasn't been an issue, so therefore all the failures of the team are his responsibility. I didn't make my dusty comment clear enough. Was dusty actually a more compentent, smarter manager in the years the team won more games? Even then he had the same flaws we all complained about the last couple years. But dusty aside, my point was that in evaluating Hendry you must look at the deals he made separate from how they worked out. The Nomar trade was very well orchestrated, especially given that we didn't give up much. I give him that credit without mentioning that Nomar tore a hamstring (or whatever) and the team floundered amidst other injuries.

  12. did you hear something I didn't? They're still just "nearing a deal" aren't they?
  13. sad; didn't see it anywhere on here link
  14. Nice to hear Lou actually cares about his pitchers and won't over abuse them again like a certain someone... Prior and Wood aside, I still remember last season when there was barely any time left in the season and we were obviously out of any race, and Dusty left Zambrano out there for like 130-140 the game after he was skipped because his back wasn't feeling right (By the way, Zam was at the Bulls game yesterday sporting dreads, and was alot slimmed down and said he worked hard this offseason to make sure the back or anything else wouldn't be a problem in 07). that's interesting.
  15. where can we see/hear this announcement, anyone know?
  16. wow. extreme respect points for Leyland.
  17. He was the pitching guru who took a seemingly raw Mark Prior (who was drafted by the Yanks in 98, I believe) and in three yrs, transformed Prior into arguably the "most hyped" college pitcher in yrs. Not saying Prior didn't deserve it at the time, but considering his production at the major league level.... Considering what he did at the outset of his career, I think the hype was obviously much deserved. It's not a lack of ability/effectiveness that has marred recent seasons. "" I'll still consider him a very good pitcher, FWIW. He just needs some luck.
  18. hmm, for no apparent reason, I assumed the name-less jerseys were popular. Perhaps because it's old fashioned? Anyways, I liked 'em quite a bit, and am actually a bit disappointed.
  19. I've been pretty hard on Sammy since he left, and will continue to be. But heck, I wish him well. I wouldn't mind seeing him play another decent year or two.
  20. we are in my mind, at least. Though I'd also say we could easily finish 4th or 5th.
  21. Gotta love how Bonds throws a teammate under the bus on a whim, then when it leaks to the press does a 180 quicker than an olympic ice skater. Or it could have just been a misunderstanding in the first place. A few articles yesterday alluded to the possibility that Bonds may not have implicated Sweeney in the first place. Bonds may be a jerk (I'm not arguing the opposite), but that doesn't mean that every bad thing that is printed or said about him is true. That's certainly true, and should be held in the back of one's mind for balance. But, at this point, Barry has earned "worst-case-scenario" presumption status. I'll hear all the facts, but . . .
  22. Isn't he the one that nearly had the team bankrupt a year or two after winning the World Series? I like it. Let's do it, Jerry!! :)
  23. He's way past that and has been for years, IMO.
