  1. STILL? Steve Phillips was being talked to on SportsCenter about various baseball issues, one was "Report: Cubs offer Schmidt 3/$45"
  2. And Bruce wins again. :) Jus like a stopped clock, I'm right twice a day. Sometimes that's all you need. Funny - that was the same logic my Huskers' A.D. used to fire 9-3 football coach Frank Solich. :)
  3. That's a great idea, especially the part about no one else being allowed to post in it. :)
  4. dang, those look good. hope you brought enough for everyone!
  5. Win-win for him. He can still work with the Cubs, privately telling them whatever he wants, but have a bigger $ deal waiting if he ever wants to let it sway him from Chicago. Then again, I don't think he naturally wants to come here.
  6. hahaha, why'd they even bother putting this in the contract??? Odd that he gets more for being the World Series MVP (better than 50 players over 4-7 games) than the reg. season MVP (better than 600 players over 162 games). Oh well, I'd be happy with either :)
  7. "Pudge Rodriguez reportedly signs with the Cubs." -- from an Arizona radio station, no less :)
  8. People aren't pickin' on these guys for their media-fashioned rationalizations; they're pickin' on them for making the terrible moves in the first place, and to top it off, having the ridiculous explanations afterwards.
  9. I see the Giants using him as a Bonds replacement.
  10. I think you're on the right track, but still missing something. OF COURSE there should be a museum where the great players/events/memories of the game are celebrated. But is a "hall of fame," as it currently exists -- with all of its rules and formality -- necessary? No, it's really not, but like College Football's BCS proves: half the fun in talking about sports are debating issues like this one.
  11. FWIW, Bruce never said that Drew would be a bad signing because he's unpopular in the clubhouse or because he rubbed his coaches the wrong way -- so don't get into a fight over that. Bruce simply inferred that the Cubs management would choose not sign him because of internal dislike for him.
  12. Love the word. And I love the word "colloquialism" . . . 'course it doesn't offend anyone . . . I'm offended. Well, colloq YOU!
  13. I just want to say I think that is ridiculous. You come to play for the team; the manager decides where you bat.
  14. Love the word. And I love the word "colloquialism" . . . 'course it doesn't offend anyone . . .
  15. So, what's the analysis on this move, experts? Is it a run-of-the-mill, fairly meaningless move, or are we gearing up for something bigger?
  16. Sorry if it was posted already He makes some good points, but he still almost lost me with his lead-in here. The cubs aren't closer to the World Series after locking up Aramis and Soriano? They have an equal or lesser chance to succeed without these two? There are many reasons to be frustrated with this deal, but the overall quality of next year's team is certainly improved. (Granted, the money spent on Soriano may be prohibitive to improving next year's pitching staff, but come on, Buster -- there's no reason to assume that yet, as no FA starter has signed with ANYONE, much less reject a low Cubs bid).
  17. just stop talking (writing, typing, whatever) Stop being a . . . . . . (edited by electron blue) you probably oughta change that before someone does for you.
  18. rjchapma: needs to realize that his opinions will never change the minds of the people he's talking to (the numbers guys). everyone talking to rjchapma: needs to realize the inverse of the above-statement.
  19. I don't think he knows that aspect any better than the other (conflicting) reports. What I've gathered from this thread: *It's roughly 5ishyears/$90ish Million guarenteed, with options for the last 2-3 years and a no trade clause covering just the first five years. No word, that I've seen, on how it's spread out.
  20. Your source must be made up. Who did you get that garbage from? I walk Jim hendry's dog, I was at Jim's house when Zito called I actually answered the phone! I asked Zito to please sign cheap. lol, you either just became my favorite or my least favorite poster on these boards. I'm really not sure which.
  21. Bruce Miles challenges your statement. He even said "Very sure." I'll be honest though, I don't know to think. I trust bruce more than any other single source . . . but when every other source is agreeing on something that Bruce disagrees with, I don't know. I'm in hurry to know though, we'll see eventually. :) Any elucidation on why you foresee this, Bruce?
  22. I don't mean to rag on Hendry's harsher critics (especially prematurely), but wouldn't just about everyone forgive him -- of just about everything -- if he finished the offseason by: * Landing Manny * Adding one solid SP and one above-avg SP That's quite the impactful offseason, and a lot of strategic maneuvering.
