  1. Well put. Nothing wrong with letting teams know that someone is available in trade, but if you go all Corey Patterson on 'em and attempt to throw him in on every deal, you end up with Nate Spears. Atlanta is playing it cool with Giles. Colorado is playing it cool with Jennings. That's how Hendry should be handling Jones. Indeed. I actually see no reason to announce publicly intentions to trade someone. It should be easy enough to privately contact another GM. Of course the whole reporter-leaking (I'm talkin' to you, Mr. Miles! ;)) . . . is another story.
  2. pretty good point, but on the other hand is the desperation factor. If you know a team is DETERMINED to get rid of a player, are you likely to offer a lot for him? not if they're desperate. . . in that case, you can wait them out, wait for the demands to drop . . . if it's announced that they intend to tradehim, eventually they will drop.
  3. My guess is Lofton. I think I like that . . .
  4. He is surely not the same pitcher he was a couple of years ago. Zambrano Hill Schmidt Lilly Miller/Prior I'd start off with Hill in the #3 slot. If he maintains what he showed last year, move him up by the ASB. I'd like to be in a position where it's a question as to who should be #2, Hill, Schmidt or Prior. Man, that's a nice dream. If Prior is healthy, he IS the #2. Hell, if he is 2003 Mark Prior, he's #1. Of course, I only bring this up as we're on the topic of "nice dreams: :) (Seriously, if we nab Schmidt and Prior is healthy, we have a truly excellent rotation)
  5. I don't have anything creative or new to add, but: 4/60 is a fair deal for us, JH. Schmidt would make enough of a difference to next year's team, that that is certainly a fair price. Get on it
  6. All I'm saying is, some players, who really love where they play and want to stick around, are willing to act on more than just financial interest. Latest example of this would probably be Chris Carpenter. Drew's always moving from team to team for a guy with top-flight skills. Maybe it means nothing, maybe it does. IMO, I'll always appreciate a player who adopts his team's city as a hometown and agrees to play there for less. But I'll never look down on a player who won't . . .
  7. am I the only one who doesn't understand the animosity toward Drew's decision to opt-out? It was in the contract . . .
  8. Erstad's an alum for my hometown Huskers (he was actually our football team's punter, too) but no thanks
  9. this might mean the inside rumors are that the Cubs are closest so their division rivals are chiming in to drive up the price. just a thought. I like the way you think. Hopefully that is the case because if the Astros or Cards get Schmidt and we get Lilly, it will be rough. Jim needs to pony up. 4/60. I want a WS. Schmidt is a solid #2 and IMO will be worth about 3 years of that. Agreed. Paying for players in FA is so much more complicated than comparing a price tag to a stat line. Maybe Schimdt, in a vacuum, is not worth $60M or whatever. But the difference between the Cubs rotation with him compared to without him is immensely significant. I'm not saying he's the missing link to WS ring, but he changes the dynamic of the team. All of a sudden, it seems like any price (remember, it's not OUR money at stake here) would be a worthwhile deal. I say see what it will take to get him for three years, Pay it.
  10. If the market for the services you're offering is as good this year as it is for MLB-proven talent, then yes, you're right :)
  11. Have you tried the Wii. I personally have not, but I just get the feeling you would HAVE to try out their motion-sensing controllers/games to really know if it's for you. Like I said, I have not played any Wii, so I can't really make an objective comparison, but I have a 360 and love it quite much. NCAA Football '07 College Hoops 2K7 Gears of War Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter Splinter Cell ^ - - - Some very solid games off the top my head. Wii may eventually get a solid lineup of games out there (no reason to really assume they won't), but xbox already has.
  12. Now THAT's the kind of critical thinking and BS-sniffing I'd like to see characterize sports reporting. Well done :D
  13. I, for one, don't mind this method too much. If you miss something in a 40-page thread it's hard to get caught up. Well, it's a concise 11 in premium format. hmmm . . . so Premium hides the worthless comments? :D
  14. I completely agree; to which I am mildly annoyed when some posters in this thread jump to conclusions based on those exact "guesses", and start posting lineups and rotations. While on its own it's not entirely bad (and what message boards are for), it is the emotional flipping out that gets me. Doesn't really bug me. Emotionally flipping out is part of being a Cubs fan. This is all part of the fun of the winter meetings. Guessing, changing lineups, rotation, dreaming. I love it! People like talking baseball. That includes lineups and signings and projected stats. At this point in the year, it's mostly speculative, and as long as people know that, this can be a great time for "what-if" discussions.

  16. Boldface is mine. You see, this is what I hate about the Hot Stove, a lot of these guys like Rosenthal don't make the distinction between actual scuttlebutt, and off-the-cuff guessing. I guarantee you Rosenthal has not heard that Texas is offering 6/102 to Barry Zito. Instead, he is ruminating to give himself something to write about. It's just like the pap Phil Rogers subjects us to all the time. Here's my Winter Meetings Blog entry, Ken. The Cubs could offer Jason Schmidt 4 years, $60MM. Really, they could. The Cubs could also trade for Manny Ramirez and Miguel Tejada. Quite the scoops, huh? to be fair, he did say "could." I completely agree that it's the key to the entire "report," but it's not Rosenthal's or the Hot Stove's fault. IMO, the better target for offseason frustration is the people who read the reports are take them as fact. That said, IF the Texas guess is true, I'd say the Cubs are out of the Zito running -- if they were even in it.
  17. I just read that and it looks like something "The Onion" would write. funny stuff! haha. Good call.
  18. I can only answer to one of those, but I'd say Yes. ;)
  19. I think he babies himself too much, and flinches at the first twinge he feels anywhere along his right arm. And this can indeed cause real problems down the road. It's a lot like a football player trying to play at less than full speed. You're trying to avoid injury, and in so doing.......you get injured. You seem to be contradicting yourself. At first he "babies himself," being bothered by even a slight pain . . . and then he's out there playin' hurt? Is he a "gamer" or a "j.d. Drew" ?
  20. Obviously that's what we all want. It is looking like Schmidt may not happen, but it might. Your Manny trade makes no sense for them, IMO. I think they want more than just a reliever and the prospects we'd be willing to give up. Don't expect to see Manny in a Cubs uniform in 2007. By the way, If what you want occurs, the "flaws and obstacles" would not stop that team from being a serious World Series contender. I knew I didn't spell obstacle right. But to the Manny thing, it's really hard to figure out what they want in return. At first I thought they wanted a SP. But since they landed the 2 from Japan, with Becket, Schill, and Papplebon, they seem pretty set there. The weakness seems to be their BP. Just throwing it out there. The second Japanese pitcher is a BP arm. They only technically have 4 starters, but have Clement rehabing. If I remember our situation correctly, he may in fact fit our needs (assuming he's a lefty) ;)
  21. This thread has taken a strage turn, but anyways, I'll just say this. I have never seen any reason to doubt Prior's passion or his character. As far as I'm concerned, he is simply battling a lingering issue -- one possibly brought on by poor management and/or poor medical attention.
  22. [fingers in ears] la la la la la, la la la la la, I cannot hear you. [fingers in ears] yeah, Bruce, you're becoming a real buzzkill! just kidding, of course. This board -- myself included -- could use the occasional "buzzkill." :)
  23. STILL? Steve Phillips was being talked to on SportsCenter about various baseball issues, one was "Report: Cubs offer Schmidt 3/$45" What worries me is I can't remember a time when Steve Phillips was right. Well, fortunately, is was not Phillips' report: he was just talking about how good the Cubs would potentially be with him. His opinion: still not good enough.
