  1. Cabrera is under control for 2 years. If it turns out the new owner can't afford to extend him he can be traded for a nice return next offseason. If we get Santana and the new owner can't afford an extension then he'll walk and all we get is a draft pick. I'll take Cabrera. I didn't think this thread was about Cabrera or Cabrera vs. Santana. It's a relevant offshoot of the conversation -- sometimes that happens. I'd rather have cabrera, too, btw. Someone always has to say it: when it comes down to a huge bat or an ACE arm, you gotta go with the everyday player... and the contract situation is icing on the cake, for cabrera's side.
  2. If they make no improvements I'd take the under on 790 without question. You aren't taking into account things like underperformance, injury, and substitutions by inept players. You paint a very rosy pitcher where nobody gets hurt or underperforms. That's how Jim Hendry puts together teams and why he's always so confused when they don't live up to his expectations. The Cubs haven't been an inept offensive ballclub for years by accident. But Jacque Jones underperformed last year, Lee's power was way down, and the entire catching position was below what Geo should provide this year... Claiming potential injuries is such an easy argument... as easy as it is unnecessary to make. We could go get A-rod, Bonds, and Cabrera, and we'd still have "underperformances, injuries, and substitutions by inept players" to worry about. Meph's making a rough estimation about how these players would do -- that's all it is.
  3. Seriously? I see no decent reason not to adopt this...
  4. Isn't a 4-man rotation what the baseball stat experts actually recommend? Not that it really matters... sounds like Boston is going to 6 to accomodate SP depth, rather than any study on usage patterns...
  5. For just Murton, it doesn't sound too bad. But I'm not sure Peralta is so much better than Theriot, that Murt and Gallagher are worth giving up.
  6. sounds to me like what the Yanks did to Torre. He set terms he knew the other side would not agree to, allowing him to walk away without seeming like he abandoned them. Coupled with the slight chance of the yanks biting on the deal . . . can't blame a-rod/boras. Solid business move.
  7. That may be, but as I believe illiniguy is alluding to above, if Marijuana can't be given up in the face of the threat of losing millions (or even a regular job), it would seem to be a serious problem (for some at least).
  8. to be fair he said tuesday at the earliest. I don't think I was being unfair. I realize he said Tuesday at the earliest. Your post made it sound like you were assuming that no news tuesday meant no news period, which isn't what Carroll seemed to mean.
  9. No. They will go to the last minute on this. Why would they announce this now? It's probably that Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn is staying and not going to St. Louis. That's what Bruce Levine reported today anyway. that doesn't have the bursting-at-the-seams-to-hold-off-until-after-WS feel that Carroll seems to be implying, though you may still be right.
  10. With our pitching the way it is (rotation basically filled, and expensively at that), the only types of SPs Hendry should look at are near-aces, worthy of pushing a couple guys down a slot (IOW, an impact player), or very value-priced #3-4 guys that could allow Marquis/Hill/Marshall to be unloaded or used as trade bait. edit: and I don't think Schilling fits either of these molds.
  11. I counted 16, perhaps you thought of the other A-gon. Doesn't really matter though :) Point is, none of these guys should be Cubs by opening day. :crosses fingers: I assume he meant Alex "Thank heaven for Steve Bartman" Gonzalez, because the other one isn't a free agent. ah, that must be the case, then. I assumed he couldn't mean A-s-Gon since he retired a year or two back, but I suppose Walker's on the list too

  13. I hope this wasn't already posted, but . . . what a strange premise Rosenthal has here. Anyone really think an a-rod deal (with, uh, who knows?) is actually close, rather than being the typical Boras long-drawn out affair? http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7386758?MSNHPHCP&GT1=10539
  14. $9M (very good player) vs. maybe $30M (great player) Is the difference between very good and great worth approx. $20M? It's far from an obvious decision. Plus A-Rod would command perhaps 5+ years, and the Sox supposedly don't go for that kind of thing...
  15. http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Events/5819/NiaVardalo_Vespa_12870859_400.jpghttp://images.filmmagic.com/images/tnm/11649239.jpg I can see it . . . it's at least as good as most of those in the video . . .
  16. Nice :D Reads like an actual page from National Sports Media
  17. I believe you mean commas. are you serious? lol'
  18. Yuck is that just a general comment on the entire cubs roster? if not ... what lineup would you suggest? Soto over Kendall? I think it's about the best we can throw out there, with not much of a difference between that and the ideal (soto in, jk out)...
  19. He did mention that it's not about the money right now. He wants to be close to his family. I hope it's not about hte money for him because he's not seeing $13 million elsewhere. Yikes. The met's hardcore lucked out in that deal. I'll say... On an unrelated note, anyone know how far away Scott Eyre's familiy lives from Chicago?
  20. haha, thanks for posting!! :)
  21. Perhaps a valid point . . . but then we're right back to veteran presence vs. offensive ability.
  22. . . . Think They're Going To Arizona To Start Spring Training link :D
  23. that quote makes it sound like Cooper is the new manager just because the astros were to lazy to look anywhere else... :)
  24. from Cubs' Notes
