  1. If they really want entertainment, they ought to hire Glenn Beckert and let him drink during the broadcast.
  2. Vikings 7, Bears 3. Bears defense dominates the game for ~55 minutes. Late in the fourth quarter, Adrian Peterson breaks free for a 70-90 yard touchdown run.
  3. The 40-man roster stands at 41. There's going to have to be another move before too long.
  4. Kosuke Fukudome for Aaron Rowand and Brandon Belt? How about then?
  5. Jeff Samardzija - $2,800,000 Kerry Wood - $1,500,000

  7. Will Hendry now try to acquire Joe Blanton from the Phillies?
  8. This won't be any problem at all. Carpenter, Jackson, Lake, and Vitters. Beyond those four, I wouldn't get too worried about anybody.
  9. Maybe they realize the year to year volitility of middle relievers and are trying to maximize his value. They're not getting a ton of value, though. A 27-year-old catcher who was in AA last year and a nice relief pitcher prospect isn't an exciting haul. Since he's still pretty cheap, I'd rather keep O'Day and see if he can continue to pitch well. But isn't he up for arbitration this year, meaning he's not going to be that cheap? Yes, but he won't get that much. Certainly no more than $1.5.
  10. It would be even worse since we'd have to trade for him.
  11. The Wells versus Garza discussion is pointless, because the Rays likely don't want Wells and Hendry likely doesn't want to trade Wells.
  12. Because I don't want to trade anything more than that. I think Garza is a little better, but he is more expensive, so the difference in ability is offset by price. It seems to me this team is intent on adding second tier starting pitching. I don't see the need. One thing I wonder is if the Cubs are trying to prioritize starting pitchers who don't have as much problem with racking up high pitch counts and can go a little deeper into games. Hence the interest in moving Gorzelanny and the interest in Garza. In theory (and depending upon the cost in talent and dollars), it's a good idea and a good way to indirectly improve the bullpen. Of course, they'd be a lot better off if they'd look for a big upgrade at second base.
  13. Wait until word of the no-trade clause leaks out!
  14. Payroll update Under contract for 2011: LF - Alfonso Soriano ($18,000,000) CF - Marlon Byrd ($5,500,000) RF - Kosuke Fukudome ($13,500,000) 3B - Aramis Ramirez ($14,600,000) 1B - Carlos Peña ($10,000,000) B - Jeff Baker ($1,175,000) SP - Carlos Zambrano ($17,875,000) SP - Ryan Dempster ($15,000,000) SP - Carlos Silva ($6,000,000) RP - John Grabow ($4,800,000) RP - Jeff Samardzija ($2,800,000) Running subtotal - $109,250,000 Arbitration eligibles, with Arizona Phil's salary estimates: C - Geovany Soto ($3,500,000) B - Koyie Hill ($750,000) SP - Tom Gorzelanny ($2,500,000) RP - Sean Marshall ($2,000,000) RP - Carlos Marmol ($4,250,000) Running subtotal - $122,250,000 Auto-renewals almost certain to make the team: SS - Starlin Castro ($500,000) 2B - Blake DeWitt ($500,000) B - Tyler Colvin ($500,000) B - Darwin Barney ($500,000) SP - Randy Wells ($500,000) RP - Andrew Cashner ($500,000) Running subtotal - $125,250,000 This leaves one spot on the bench and two spots on the pitching staff.
  15. OK, predict the deal. Tom Gorzelanny, Jay Jackson, and Robinson Chirinos for Chris Davis and Darren O'Day.
  16. Wow, that's a mangling of his name. Maybe it's a different guy! :D
  17. Are the Cubs still interested in Chris Davis from the Rangers, they have a need for catching and it would seem the Cubs offering arbitration lines up with the Cubs parting with one of their catching prospects? Bruce Levine: Yes, Texas wants Robert Chirronos, a hard-hitting 27-year-old catcher. The Cubs and Texas are looking to expand the deal where it would be Chirrinos and a pitcher going to the Rangers for Davis and a pitcher, a reliever off the big-league staff. That deal is still being explored by both sides.
  18. The best part of this trade is that we get to be dominated by Casey Kelly for the better part of the next decade!
  19. Patriots 62, Bears 14.
  20. I wish they would quit dicking around and just sign Brad Hawpe.
  21. And we almost certainly will.
