    Giles would have been ideal. Perhaps that wasn't feasible, but the Cubs apparent disinterest was disappointing. The overpay for Neifi was unfortunate. I would have looked for some cheaper bullpen options, but I'm optimistic about Howry and Eyre.

    It seems to me that Cubs fans are odd. Maybe it's not just us; maybe it's all baseball fans. If we had had a left handed hitting middle infielder who had put up a .294/.349/.429/.778 line at High-A at age 20 and a LHP who works routinely in the low 90s and can touch 95 and we had traded them for the right to pay Corey Patterson $2.8 million to be our 4th outfielder, don't you think we'd have gone ballistic?

    Odd that the Cubs chose to acquire performance-over-tools-Spears. Seems like a very un-Cub-like move.

    Drese is obviously nothing special, but, if getting him meant we could use Jerome Williams in a deal for a genuine #5 hitter, I'd make that trade for Patterson. The difference between Williams and Drese isn't going to determine whether this team goes to the playoffs. The 2006 Cubs are going to need a significant contribution from Kerry Wood (or, in the alternative, a significant contribution from a surprise starting pitcher like Rich Hill or Angel Guzman).

    Great idea, except for the fact that Floyd and Heilman are each worth more on their own than Soriano.

    Why would anyone want the truly awful Paul DePodesta? If we're going to fire Hendry, let's rescue the extremely underappreciated Gerry Hunsicker from his exile in Tampa Bay.

    I don't remember, but I reviewed his game log a while back and it was pretty clear he was over the limit.

    Both burned their ROY eligibility - Murton for PAs and Cedeno for days on the active roster.

    The '08 option is a vesting option.

    It may be true that Cedeno will become a special player. However, the only thing Joey Cora knows about baseball is that it's a very difficult game to play. And Cedeno can't be ROY.

    The rushing of Patterson was not in the jump from Lansing to West Tennessee - that was an aggressive promotion, but reasonable and defensible. If anything, what may have hurt him was moving to the majors so quickly with so little time at AAA, especially after he performed poorly in his brief time there.

    At first glance, that Walker-Kennedy-Koskie rumor seems fairly equitable. However, Koskie is guaranteed $11 over the next two seasons and has a fairly easily vested $6.5 option for 2008. Is the difference between Kennedy-Alfonzo and Koskie-Alfonzo worth the extra financial commitment? I realize that the Angels would probably like to make room for Kendrick at 2B, but they could do that by simply letting Kennedy's deal expire. The one way that this might make sense for the Angels is if they've soured on McPherson as an everyday 3B.

    #1 seems much more plausible than #2.

    Wilson's arbitration eligible, I think 2nd year. There have been newspaper quotes that Wilson doesn't fit in with "Tracyball", which is apparently what Jim Tracy wants to do with the club. Third time arb eligible.

    Adam Greenberg was on his way to becoming one of the game's best fourth outfielders?

    At this point, I would hold on to Walker, even though I'm not a big fan of his. As far as places that Walker might fit, San Francisco could use him as a first baseman. Right now, they have the awful-against-RHP Lance Niekro penciled in there. A Walker-Niekro platoon would give them decent production.
