    Unconfirmed rumor out of the west coast that the Cubs and A's may be close to a deal in which the Cubs would acquire reserve outfielder Bobby Kielty. Take it with a grain of salt.

    The 40-man roster is currently full, but unless Wellemeyer defies all odds and reason and makes the team, he will be off due to his out-of-options status. As such, there is effectively room on the 25-man roster for one NRI.

    Please note that, despite how the link reads, the player returned is Juan Mateo, not Julio. He had real good numbers last season, but I saw him a few years ago in one game and he was completely unimpressive. Small sample size, plus he could have improved.

    It's just an estimate for planning purposes. The Cubs have a habit of overpaying role players. I expect he'll actually get something in the $0.6-$0.7 range.

    I know we're hungry for anything to talk about, but this is all so much nothing. Ohman was eligible for arbitration, but had essentially no ammunition to take to a case. Nevertheless, he asked for more than he knew any arbiter would likely award him. He probably did this hoping to squeeze a little extra money out of the Cubs, knowing that they don't like to go through a hearing. The Cubs, knowing that Ohman had a dog of a case, but still not wanting to go through a hearing, coughed up a little extra dough to get Ohman to settle. In the end, he probably got an extra $50,000 out of the Cubs over the settlement figure they originally had in mind. Good for him. I'd be shocked if there were any hard feelings at all.

    Juan Pierre - OF - Cubs Cubs agreed to terms with outfielder Juan Pierre on a one-year, $5.75 million contract. That's midpoint between the $6.5 million Pierre filed at and the $5 million the team offered. A long-term deal is still a possibility for Pierre, who is eligible for free agency at season's end. Feb. 2 - 3:18 pm et Will Ohman - R - Cubs Cubs agreed to terms with LHP Will Ohman on a one-year, $610,000 contract. Ohman asked for $775,000 and was offered $500,000 in his first year of arbitration eligibility. He'll be the No. 2 lefty in the Cubs' pen after finishing with a 2.91 ERA in 69 appearances last season. Feb. 2 - 3:16 pm et

    I've got him at $6.9. That's a 75-25 split of the difference between the two figures, in Zambrano's favor.

    As far as we know, it's a flat $2.5x2 guaranteed, with no incentives of any kind.

    The stats suggested are pretty much on the high end in every category. It's probably overly optimistic to expect all of them ON TOP of expecting him to be healthy enough to put in 150+ games. That said, I hope they keep him and play him a lot. He's the best fit at 2B and at #2 in the batting order, given our current personnel.

    Well, except for the fact that he's never had that kind of season before and he's entering his age 33 season.

    Listening to Harry on the radio was a blast, especially in his later years. My favorite, which most of the time would seemingly come out of nowhere: "Look out!" You never knew if there was a close pickoff play, a line drive had been hit into the stands, or a Soviet ICBM had just passed over the ballpark.
