  1. Seems unlikely at this point. You'd think so, although the national team played pretty well against the Orioles back in 1999. They'd have the advantage of being a true team versus a team of All-Stars, too. I hope they play so we get to find out.
  2. No worries. It does look like Cuba's participation is unlikely. An official decision won't happen until December, though; and it sounded like Japan wasn't going to participate just a couple months ago so I'm still holding out hope.
  3. I was under the impression that Cuba's already been invited. Has that changed? Have the declined the invite? I hope not.
  4. Time to get tickets.
  5. Heard? Did you even see the play? If you didn't have a history here, I'd call you a troll. You certainly appear to be trolling in this thread at least.
  6. Modzilla asked me if he could change your name to something other than what you asked for and I vetoed! There was almost a coup. Modzilla's suggestion was really funny.
  7. Kenji's caught many, many pitchers who only spoke English or Spanish without any problems, and he's widely viewed as the the best handler of pitching staffs in his league. I think he'd do fine. I also think it's highly unlikely he ends up on the Cubs.
  8. Johjima. ;) He's a free agent after this offseason, he's 4 months older than Barrett, and his numbers last year roughly equate to .315/.373/.533 in MLB. I think I'm done with believing those rough equivalents. Iguchi's equivalent was .311/.358/.474 last year and he's hit .279/.347/.440 this year. Not perfect but not bad either.
  9. He threw out 50.8% of basestealers in 2002 and 42.7% in 2003. I'm looking for his 2004 percantage but it could take me a while to find it, and his 2005 numbers won't be availible for a few months.

  11. Fuld over Pie in CF? Based on 2005 stats alone. Pie didn't play enough to earn the nod. I'm as big a Fuld fan as anyone but I can't agree. Pie's numbers over half a season were outstanding, and he's two levels above Fuld and 4 years younger. It's not much of a contest in my mind.

  13. Won't it just take a Cardinal win this afternoon followed by a Houston loss tonight to clinch? Nevermind, Garwilly beat me to it.

  15. 2 weeks at $300K per year looks like big money to me, too.
  16. Maybe in the short term, but in the long-term, both Felix Pie and Ryan Harvey---IMO---will be better then Quentin. Conor Jackson on the other hand..... Quentin hit .300/.420/.550 in AAA, Neither Pie or Harvey have approached those numbers at any level. In fairness to Pie, Quentin is two and a half years older than Felix. Pie hit .304/.349/.554 as a 20-year-old in AA. Quentin hit 303./.398/.539 as a 20-year-old at Stanford. Pie does have the advantage in age, but he's never going to walk enough to even touch Quentin's OBP. Perhaps, but I think it's a little early to make blanket pronouncements like that. We do know that Pie was a much, much, much better hitter at 20 than Quentin was.

  18. What's your preferred method for explaining the game? There's no way to fully explain the game, that's just the point. if the game could be objectively explained fully why hasn't it been in the 150 years people have been playing it. Does the team with the best stats win very year? Only if you are correct and cite the only stat that matters: wins and losses. Stats can be helpful to try to predict how things will go. But can you explain with stats the dread I feel facing the reds lineup while i really don't fear the cards and haven't for a couple of years. Intangibles exist. If you think you can explain this game fully you've got some ego on you. You didn't answer my question. How do you know that Patterson has "sucked" more than Perez this year without looking at their stats? i watch the games. All I needed to know.

  21. I'm aware of that. Your response didn't have much to do with who you think deserves to win the Cy Young either. :D
  22. Do you think one of the most dominating pitching performances of modern times produced by one of the greatest pitchers of all time (if not the greatest) deserves the Cy Young?
  23. If he's so sabermetric, why did he write a piece promoting Jones for MVP? I suggest you email him and ask him. I wouldn't describe Stark as a sabermetrician. He might use some of the stats once in a while, but he's not an advocate of the approach like Neyer.
  24. I know he's a free agent if he elects not to re-sign with the Yankees but I don't remember how it works. Without that clause, I'm almost positive he wouldn't be able to go back to Japan to play without permission from the Yankees. I suspect that's one of the main reasons he wanted it originally. That, and the fact he had to play 10 years in Japan to earn his free agency rights and didn't want to lose them for another 6 years.
