  1. Regression to the mean. He's far, far more likely to produce in the second half at the level he's produced at over his previous 4000 at bats than he is to produce at his level of production over his last 200. if only baseball were hard and fast as statistics would like you to believe Yet, most people had no problem believing Michael Barrett was going to have a 2nd half regression to the mean when they were storming the castle with torches and pitchforks after Hendry traded him (and rightfully so). I guess statistics only apply to annoited messageboard favorites and not messageboard villains. regression to the mean only means that we could assume that J.J. will perform in the second half as his career numbers suggest. So it is incorrect to think that he will hit better than his career averages in the second half just because he hit so much worse in the first half. That is not how regression to the mean works. And I know almost nothing about statistics.
  2. http://www.answers.com/topic/player-to-be-named-later here is some info.
  3. I don't know the rules that well but isn't that one of the reasons for ptbnl, so you can trade guys currently on the dl?
  4. I guess I should say more meaningless than they already are.
  5. Power rankings would be pretty meaningless if the just listed all the teams in order of their record.
  6. a post that captures why casinos make tons and tons of money Casinos make lots and lots of money because their patrons don't understand regression to the mean. Apparently, other folks don't either. For a board that has so many posters preaching objective analysis, they sure are terribly subjective and biased when it comes to their anointed villains and persona non gratas. Gambler's fallacy alert! Gambler's fallacy alert!
  7. I am excited to see Scott get a little bit of a chance. He could be a decent regular and at least will be a solid bat on the bench that could fill in at the corners(did he ever get any time at a COF spot?). It will be nice going into the next few years with having a solid cheap young bench in place. No more macias's, no more Neifi's, no more Lenny's....
  8. I don't know, Woody is pretty sexy.
  9. When I heard them say that, I was afraid they were thinking about moving Dempster to the rotation again. That wouldn't happen. You don't take a guy who has been a closer for three years coming off the DL and stick him into the rotation. This is the cubs we are talking about. You know, the team that used a "college of coaches".
  10. GET THOSE OPTIMISTIC NUMBERS OUT OF HERE! GET THOSE NUMBERS THAT DONT MEAN ANYTHING OUT OF HERE :?: He's not the second coming of Johnny Bench, but those aren't bad numbers, especially for a catcher. We need him to produce for a few months, hopefully he will hit like last year. If not, Lou has shown he will play guys that produce so Soto could get the nod down the road if Kendall continues to struggle. I meant they didnt mean anything because they are from many moons ago and are not indicative of the current Jason Kendall. not to mention roster turnover (how many of the same pitchers are on NL central teams from 2004?) and the fact that those numbers are very similar to his overall stats; what are they even supposed to prove? That he put up consistent numbers against all opponents? I don't hate this trade because the money doesn't sound like too big deal and I feel that minor league relievers aren't super valuable.
  11. At least all we gave up was Bowen. Let's hope he remembers how to hit. -Blevins too I guess
  12. I want a Scott Servais card more than anything in the world.
  13. All I care about is that their goal is to win and recognize the fact that they don't know crap about building a baseball team and their only job is to hire the right people to run things. Payroll be damned.
  14. Grady Sizemore Joe Mauer Hanley Ramirez Justin Verlander Jake Peavy You may call me crazy for going with Hanley over Reyes, but I just don't like Reyes much for some reason.
  15. This post is absolutely hilarious.
  16. Oh wow this one is tough. Two of my favorite dark horse candidates. I'll hold off to see if one of them can sell me.
  17. I wish the cubs would look to trade Zambrano. I would love some of those red sox prospects.
  18. I like Epatt. Everyday second baseman next year?
  19. Who are they playing? I love the butter tongue!
  20. Just look at Brian Dopirak's progression. A player can kill at one level but can't handle the move to a more advanced league. Who could have predicted Dopirak's huge downfall after his amazing 2004?
  21. I can't not vote for a girl who loves baseball and Scrubs.
