  1. I wish it were July and maybe we could back up the truck. Too late now.
  2. Didn't realize that Ceda had shoulder surgery. When did that happen? Gregg has good "stuff" but seems to make an a lot of mistakes. In any case, I'd let Guzman close. Not that it matters - 6 back with under 50 to play is a tough spot to be in.
  3. The only thing that bothers me about Gregg is who we traded to get him. He's been better than I thought he would be and - in any case - he's a reliever. Rely on them at your own risk. And he just got a save.
  4. Right - its luck or chance rather than a matter of statistical probability. In other words, its just as likely that you won't get hot. The 2003 Cubs got hot "at the right time" but the 2007 and 2008 versions didn't get as lucky.
  5. 1. I believe its a statistically-backed fact that playoff series are a crapshoot b/c of the relatively small sample size; and 2. I have said this so many times I feel like some will be sick of it, but if you do the math you will see that a team will win 90 or more games when that plays .666 baseball against teams at around .500 or worse and then breaks even against teams that are better than .500 or better.
  6. I am really excited based on what I have been reading for the last couple of weeks. Most encouraging to me is what is being said about Pace and Williams. If they both play well and we are able to pressure the opposing QB, watch out...
  7. Throwing a beer on someone from 15 ft above with the built-in assurance that the victim can't come -up and kick your ass is about as chicken [expletive] as it gets. BTW, big props to Victorino for maintaining his concentration and apologies to him on behalf of normal Cubs fans. One thing we have traditionally been succesful at is being decent towards other teams' fans and players.
  8. No easy way out for the Crew either. Gotta re-sign Fielder, or you let him go and get some picthing, but then there's a huge hole in the middle of the order. EDIT: Hooray for unintentional jokes!
  9. First thing Kane has hit since his pro career started. (yuck-yuck-yuck)
  10. wait, what? when did I say that? http://northsidebaseball.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=51922&start=125#p2014920 is memory something you can flick on and off Apparently yes, and he isn't the only one.
  11. In what sort of bizzaro universe doesn't Glavine make it on the first ballot?
  12. why? i like josh hamilton. reading comprehension > you sorry, i dont revel in other's misfortunes a) but i do? no. now you're just making things up b) you don't, really? really? then what do you call constantly making fun of dead people? I don't know, I'd rather root for a good person in a tough situation than hope for them to stumble. How do you know Josh Hamilton is a good person? Do you know him personally? And if you do in fact know him personally, what's your definitinion of "good person"?
  13. Why would the Blue Jays agree to take a bad contract back? They can just unload Rios whole contract onto the team that made the claim. See above. Just thinking aloud. Bradley can still be productive at DH.
  14. Query: would you rather have Rios or Milton Bradley? What if the Cubs have claimed him and the deal is Rios for Bradley? That would save money for the Jays, no? EDIT: Here's Rios' deal: 09:$5.9M, 10:$9.7M, 11:$12M, 12:$12M, 13:$12.5M, 14:$12.5M, 15:$13.5M club option ($1M buyout) full no-trade clause, 2009-10 Obviously he has the NTC, but I strongly suspect he'd waive it to be with a contender. Cubs send Bradley and a bit of cash to Jays for Rios. Jays spend $300k more in 2010, but save $2 million in 2011 and then Bradley comes off the books. The Cubs get a wash this season and next, after which Rios costs $2 million more than Bradley would have.
  15. I generally don't dislike our own guys, but I really wish Aaron Miles were not here. He's just awful.
  16. Why not? The possibility, however remote, of having to face Peavy in a World Series. You're very odd. I don't see why that's odd. Peavy on San Diego was completely nonthreatening unless we face him in the one series we have left with the Padres. Peavy on another contender means he could flare up in October. Let's try: A. Winning the division first; B. Winning our NLDS first; and C. Winning the NLCS first... ...before we worry baout who we are facing in the WS.
  17. I don't get why we don't have a back-up catcher here either. Just send Blanco down or something. EDIT: Nevermind - does Baker have options? I would guess not. We should just go with 11 picthers.
  18. I am very disappointed in Stone. I really though the passage of time would allow him to get over himself. Guess his ego is much bigger than that.
  19. The value of getting Martinez to replace Hill (in place of Soto) for 3 or 4 weeks might be one win. To give up anything in such a deal would be awful, so if Hendry isn't "in on that" then he is doing the right thing.
  20. I am pretty sure I read a direct quote from the Nationals' GM stating that Dunn will not be traded.
  21. I wrote this to a friend in response to this news:
