  1. I agree with Meph on this - aside from pure speculation based largely on conventional wisdom, I've never seen proof that the string of games or any other is responsible for Prior's injury woes (or any other pitcher). Heck, you could just as easily blame Marcus Giles. Now, I am not saying that allowing young guy to throw that many pitches that many games in a row is a great idea (particulalry if he hasn't built up to it). But to me this is a mostly about being lucky enough to avoid catastrophic injuries and having a body that heals itself at a far above average rate.
  2. I understand the author reserved the right to utilize 20-20 hindsight so I won't pick on some of these (including Carpenter and Hafner), but: - Carlos Lee has been very good - .314 / .368 / .569 / 144 in 2008. - Todd Helton was a monster back when he inked his deal (160 OPS-plus at age 27 in 2001) - Weren't the Robertson and/or Bonderman deals at or below market value at the time? Looks to me like this author was just looking for big numbers. To me bad deals come in all shapes and sizes, as we have often discussed here. He missed the boat on the many craptacular contracts for middle relievers and utility MIF'ers, for example.
  3. I feel like there's a good amount of defensive backs who do well out of small schools. I don't know if there are very many linebackers or lineman who have succeeded out of these schools though. Your theory would make sense, because I believe you have to be a much better athlete to compete in the NFL on defense, and those guys usually go to the best schools. Whereas some of the offensive positions require a little more subtle skill set. But I've never seen the numbers. Me either. Assuming I am right it would be interesting to study why it is, for example, small school O-Linemen do so much better than small school D-Linemen. I feel like I can name three or four small school OL's for every one small school DL.
  4. Is it me, or do small-school defensive players generally have less success in the pros than their offensive counterparts? And by small school I mean D I-AA (as it was formerly called) and below.
  5. I dunno that the Bears are good. As a 9-7 team where a quality WR could make a big difference, I think they qualify as good, and a good fit. They have some serious problems on both lines. As you know, few if any teams can sustain "goodness" with below avg. O and D lines.
  6. I dunno that the Bears are good.
  7. Per ESPN.com, Manny and Dodgers have agreed to 2 yr, $45 million dollar deal. Good for Manny - he's an amazing hitter.
  8. Add Cassell and then send off Thigpen to (somewhat) replace the pick you surrender? Really good move for the Chiefs. I am surprised so many people think this is a good move for the Chiefs. Cassell is moderate upgrade over Thigpen, who was pretty good last season on a really bad team. So the Chiefs gave up the 35th pick for an unproven QB who played with a good O-Line and excellent WR's last season. To boot, Cassell's cap figure will probably more than Thigpen and the 35th pick combined. Meanwhile the Pats now have two picks in the 2nd Rnd, clear money and get younger.
  9. I know that no one wants Marvin Harrison, and I know you feel the same Jerry....
  10. i was thinking of kerr, then. i remember jordan feeding pax time after time in game 5 of the 91 finals, though. maybe that's what i was remembering. That is correct. Jordan fed Pax all through the last two games of the 91' Finals. The Game 6 shot by Pax in 1993 was off a feed from Grant, who was open under the basket but had been brutal offensively during that game. IIRC, Pippen found Grant, and Grant turned and hit Pax.
  11. LOL I was just thinking to myself, "Why did the Tribe release Marte in the first place? Ishe out of options?"
  12. I've seen this movie before, except last time the GM was a rather large individual with enormous bags under his eyes.
  13. Pax did much good today, but he's still the worst GM in town for putting himself in this position in the first place. At least he tacitly admitted to the Wallace and Nocioni contracts being mistakes. And getting a 1st round pick for Thabo is a good haul. Now he needs to find a way to get rid of Hinrich and - perish the thought - find a "big" who can actually score (at least Gooden could do a bit of that). Sadly, he's wasted one of his trading chips in Gordon. We'll get nothing but cap room for him when he departs this Summer.
  14. Taylor would make a fantastic one-two punch with Forte. Give him 8-12 touches a game and he can still be very effective, plus he is generally considered one of the best at blocking in the passing game. Bears are going to need to lessen the kids' load this season. Makes a lot of sense to me
  15. Yes I dunno about that. Let's assume the vast majority (say more than 70%) of players used PED's in any given year. Isn't the point of cheating to gain an unfair advantage? Is the advantage unfair if everyone has access to the method and no one is punished for utilizing it? Yes cheating is getting an unfair advantage. 30% of baseball players did not have that advantage. Your train of thought punishes some people - the people that played by the books for doing what was right and not taking advantage of a situation where the league and the player's union decided not to do anything. They are the real perpetrators here. They share about as much blame as the players who were on the juice. I have never seen so many people defend illegal activity. I'm hardly "defending" it. What I am doing is asking how some activity can meet the definition of "cheating" if most everyone is engaging in it. Forget how some governing body defines cheating. I am asking the question in more of a broad sense.

  17. For some reason I feel badly for saying this, but other than the "I can't look away from the dead bodies on the road" aspect of this, I don't really care. If the vast majority of players "cheat", is it still cheating?
  18. It makes sense if FontenYES is dealt for Jake P. I thought we were done pretending every trade was a precursor to Peavy Crud - why am I always the last to get these memos??!!
  19. I like guys who hit lots of homeruns and take lots of walks, but that's just me.
  20. Manny >>>>>>>>>>> Dunn, and I like Dunn yeah, you can definitely go get dunn instead of manny if you want, but signing a lesser player is hardly giving manny the finger. Preach it. People need to realize just how good Manny is and has been. The team picture of the most dangerous hitters of the last twenty years unquestionably includes him.
  21. Reminds me of the classic and underrated, "Real Genius": "Ok, lets just take a step fwd. Now take a step back. Now take a step fwd., and back....and now we cha-cha!!"
  22. Maybe my upset over this is tied to the notion that Olson could be turned over to the Pads to get Peavy. Or the notion that Pie was swapped for Heilman and the prospect whose name I can't recall. I won't miss Ronny. His plate discipline was never impressive, though I wonder why - if we have to have another backup MIF'er who can play 3B - Ronny didn't fit the bill. Bah, whatever. I can't figure what Hendry is doing this offseason.
  23. This simply can't be true. ESPN has screwed this sort of thing up before, and Rosenthal didn't report the same deal.
  24. It's more complicated than that. Peavy might not be either, and you have to consider the opportunity cost of what else you could get down the road for those prospects and that payroll space. Did you just compare Peavy to Marshall and Vitters? Please tell me you didn't....
