  1. Oh they'll be "after" all of the available players yet Hendry will aquire none of them. He's already missed the boat on Giles, Castillo and to a certain extent, Pierre, who's to say he won't miss the boat on the remaining players?
  2. Soriano is the exact opposite of what the Cubs need. How is it that many of us can see the need for someone to get on base ahead of Lee and Ramirez and Cubs management can't? In Lee and Ramirez they've got all the power they need, why in the world do they need power out of 2B?
  3. I don't believe Boras is going to back down from his ridiculous demands - there's a team that's going to bite. It won't be Cubs but, some team will bite. You really think he's going to get 7 years 84 million? I'd guess the final deal will be 5 years...something in there...at age 32 that's not ridiculous, but I can't imagine him getting 7 years. I didn't think Beltran was worth the deal he got last year nor did I believe Furcal was worth 13 million a year let alone the 9+ million the Cubs were offering. So, yes, I believe some team will gullible enough to give Boras what he's asking for...
  4. \ I agree but, when one considers Baker is the manager, despite the presence of very good SS prospect, getting an established SS makes sense. How pitiful is it that Hendry has to somehow dumb down the team to save Baker from himself?

  6. Seconded, I know, Wood on the DL at some point of 2006 is a certainty but, when healthy there's no denying he's one the best pitchers in Baseball. As selfish as it sounds, I'd rather see him on the DL for the Cubs than go on to Texas and have a healthy season.
  7. One, Hendry' going to sign Jacque Jones or Juan Encarnacion and call it good for the offseason. I'm changing my prediction to zero, Hendry and the Cubs will be rumored to be "in" serveral deals but alas, nothing will get done. Feburary will roll around and Hendry will sign Juan Encarnacion.

  9. You're probably right. Do you think the Cubs really have a shot at signing him? I'm thinking waiting to last moment will squeeze more dollars or another year out the Braves.
  10. You can read the rest of the article at the link above His agent said it wasn't just about the money, we'll see. If he picks LA over us, then yes, it is just about the money. If he picks Atlanta over us, we'll, then maybe he could stick to his guns that he was too loyal to the organization to leave them. I can't see why anyone would want to go play for the Dodgers, unless it is for the money. What a horribly, horribly run team. I'm starting to believe the Cubs and Dodgers are being used to squeeze a little more out the Braves. He'd been a Cub by now if he was truely as interested as the media suggested.
  11. As far as SS we might as well accept the worst case scenario - Nefi is going to be there on opening day and quite probably hitting 1 or 2. If Furcal was truely interested in the Cubs he'd signed by now, the money the Cubs offered was more than fair. He wanted to remain with Atlanta all along, the Cubs and Dodgers were used to squeeze a few more dollars out of the Braves.
  12. I don't know if its restlessness or what but, at every turn, Hendry' letting the Cubs be upstaged by White Sox. First the WS now, the Sox trade for Thome and resign Konerko and what has Hendry done? Sign a couple of over priced middle relievers, Nefi the Great and made the infamous trade for a PTNL, way to go Jimbo. I don't feel upstaged about the Thome signing. Frankly, he has things to prove coming off of an injury year. Plus, Thome certainly has a cloud of rumor and innuendo following him considering the new rules against performance enhancing drugs... I digress... I think it's obvious Hendry is trying to work other deals. You really can't compare his task to the Sox because he has more holes to fill. Anyway, there will be plenty of time to judge the offseason; the Winter Meetings haven't even started yet. I expect action and if I don't get it I will blast him too. That's more frustration than logic on my part, it appears as if all this activity is going on and he's missing opprotunties to really improve the Cubs.
  13. I'm optimistic it won't happen, I didn't say I'd be blindsided if Perez starts over Cedeno at SS. :) I am as well...
  14. For me, the main reason Furcal is must have is Baker' illogical loyalty to Nefi, I believe, many of us would be content with Walker - despite his defensive shortcomings - and Cedeno. You can't "dumb" a team down b/c of a manager, I think they've done it to an extent with the bullpen this off-season as far as taking away the need for Baker to become creative with his pen to try and make it productive. This isn't my opinion but, if you have to overspend on Furcal to prevent the manager from playing the wrong guy, there are huge issues beyond those players involved. Personally, I'll give Baker the benefit of the doubt as far as starting Cedeno over Perez. If it doesn't work out that way simply b/c of Neifi's expereince, I'll be furious. But, we've already seen it, in many regards, if Furcal doesn't sign, Cedeno-Perez is Hollandsworth-Dubois II and we all know how that played out.

  17. Solid move for the Twins, I was hoping Hendry could have put together something for Castillo but, at least we won't see him in Cardinal uniform next season. I'm starting to believe Furcal is going to resign with Atlanta, all this Cubs and Dodgers posturing is just to squeeze a few more bucks out the Braves. A Walker and Cedeno MI may not be so bad after all, someone's got to make clear to Baker that Cedeno is the Cub SS.
  18. Between the two, Furcal has a greater chance of playing out his contract. AJ Burnett can dominate but he hasn't proven to me that he's worth a 5 year commitment. I agree about playing out the contract - Burnett is high risk high reward. Still, I'd rather have Burnett. Perhaps... Teams spend based on need and with the current state of the Cubs' rotation I'm not sure they can afford to gamble on Burnett. However, I can certainly understand the Cardinals interest in him. Conversely, aquiring Furcal solves a couple of different problems for the Cubs so I can see why they have offered him 5/50. On another note, while I'm not the least bit confident that Wood will be completely healthy this year I am hoping that the law of averages are on the Cubs side, this season, and that he'll make a substantial number (dare I say all) of his starts. Given Burnett's track record over the last three years don't you have the same concerns about him? Yes, he made 32 starts last year but only 19 in 2004 and 4 in 2003 before having a second TJS. The funny thing is I think Furcal makes more sense for the Cards then the Cubs. As it stands STL has no 2nd basemen - Eck could slide over there and we could put Furcal. The Cubs however have RC and Walker - both are solid options. To Manager with some sense yes, RC and Walker are solid options but, with Baker its more like RC (really Perez) and Walker.
  19. Adding Cedeno to above group makes it more attractive...
  20. I'm in the Castillo boat as well but, given the Marlins are in a salary dumping mode I don't think they'll take on Walker. Perhaps, Cedeno (meaning Furcal must be signed) and Pinto for Castillo? Then spin Walker to Dodgers for Bradley?
  21. I don't think the situation is *quite* that dire. I will agree though that obtaining Soriano would be a simply idiotic transaction. We were tops in BA/SLG, bottom in OBP - Soriano does not remedy the ailment. I don't believe Mench would be too bad of an acquisition, he makes contact, and he hasn't peaked. Soriano, on the other hand, brings absolute nothing, defensively he's on par with Walker maybe, worse, let the Rangers keep him.
  22. They'll move kent to first, and Walker will play second. As for Konerko, I don't think the Dodgers would be interested. I was close, I knew it was something to do with first. On a side note that could be the worst defensive half infield in the league. Unless its hit right at Walker or Kent a gb to their side of infield has 50/50 chance of making it to RF.
  23. Reads like a good idea to me however, Cedeno/Perez 2B smacks of Hollandsworth/Dubois LF...
  24. While my perference is a trade for Castillo and going with Cedeno at SS, I'm pushing for the Furcal signing. In my opinion, its the only way Perez won't see significant playing time, if Walker is retained, the infield is set - Furcal/Walker. If Furcal is not signed and, SS is left to Cedeno/Perez, recent history has shown Dusty will find a way to get Perez 100 or more SS starts.
  25. i can't freaking believe it. i retract all of my previous statements. Me either, I too was beginning to get discouraged most especially after losing Collins. Scheyer I could understand, he was a Dookie the minute he picked a basketball but, I thought Collins was clearly headed for Illinois. Just maybe Weber can recruit after all...
