  1. Well, so much for the scoreless first inning wish...
  2. You know the season is down the tubes when a Fresh Prince re-run or the White Sox game is more appealing...
  3. I've stopped asking or hoping for a dominate Prior start; I'd just like to see a scoreless 1st inning. In fact, if Prior manages a scoreless 1st, I believe there should be mid-inning ceremony in recognition of this monumental accomplishment.
  4. That's the only thing in Burnett's favor. But how meaningful is it. After 2003 Wood was the one who looked healthy. They've gone back and forth with their problems. My point is neither is reliable, and nobody would sign Wood to a big extension today, there's no justification for giving Burnett that contract instead. Given the Cubs recent history with injury proned players or players recently removed from a serious injury there's no way Hendry would take a chance on Burnett. After this and last seasons, Hendry' got to be a little gun shy about such players.
  5. NL C - STL E - ATL W - SD WC - HOU AL C - CHWS E - BOS W- LAA WC - CLE WS LAA over ATL
  6. Let's see: 1. Couldn't pitch a scoreless 1st inning if his life depended on it 2. Couldn't pitch a scoreless inning after the Cubs take the lead 3. Couldn't pitch a game without giving up a 2 out, 1-2 or 0-2 RBI hit, in tonight's case a 2R HR Which leaves only one conclusion right now Prior flat out sucks...
  7. Thus far, at least 1 first inning run...will Prior ever pitch a scoreless 1st inning again?
  8. I'm going lower, 2 1st inning runs precipitated by a two out walk after Prior was ahead 0-2.
  9. I guess the more realistic question isn't whether or not Prior will have a dominating start but, what's the over-under on how many 1st inning runs he'll give up. Or how many 2 out, 0-2 RBI hits he'll give up....
  10. What has a higher probability of occuring the above or Mark Prior having a dominating start tonight?
  11. Yes, Piniella was traded to Tampa, sort of: By Jim Callis October 28, 2002 In a move initially reported during the World Series but not officially confirmed until Monday, the Mariners released manager Lou Piniella from his contract so he could return home to Tampa and skipper the Devil Rays. As expected, Seattle received all-star outfielder Randy Winn as compensation—but Tampa Bay also received a player, infield prospect Antonio Perez. Prior to this the A's and Pirates made a deal involving Chuck Tanner: 1976: He spent a year piloting Oakland before Charley Finley traded him to Pittsburgh for Manny Sanguillen and $100,000. Chuck Finley making a strange deal, who would have thought?
  12. Yet more Baker stupidty, in response to the Cardinals successful execution of a Suicide Squeeze, from today's online Tribune: "They have the personnel to do it," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "And they do it against guys who throw strikes. It's one of their things." What kind of personnel would that be Dusty? Baseball players?
  13. Here's to hoping the Astros lose tonight, no clinching party for the Cards at Wrigley Field this weekend! Besides some of Patterson' at-bats is there a worse baseball sight than seeing the incongruous blob Ray King rolling out of the Cards bullpen?
  14. I'm at work...Patterson with a hit and RBI? That must be a typing error, did anyone see this happen?
  15. 0-4 3K's, pop-up to 2b on 13 pitches...
  16. The bigger question is when or how Dusty will replace Murton with Macias? His first opportunity at a double switch despite the fact that the 8th spot made the last out and Murton' may be hitting sixth? What is it with getting Perez and or Macias in every game? Do they have some kind of appearance incentives within their contracts?
  17. 3B - 100% Rolen over Ramirez, well we can play that game to- SS - 100% Garciapparra dwarfs Eck literally, figuratively and statistically SP - 100% Prior, Wood and Zambrano collectively are >> Carpenter, Suppan and Marquis 2B - I believe that's even
  18. 2004 Williams Carpenter Morris Suppan Marquis Haren Reyes, Al Flores 2005 Carpenter Mulder Morris Marquis Suppan Reyes, Anthony Eldred Thanks, so, that's 15 starters the Cards have used over the last two years, this year alone, the Cubs have used at least 10 starters.
  19. I don't really agree that he's better than those guys... Renteria is better than Eckstein, unless you ignore the rest of their careers and focus on this year only. Cabrera's numbers are very close to Eckstein's, which makes the contract that Cabrera got from the Angels even more stunning. What a brutal move by the Angels, in all honesty. Not every player has... but many have. Womack last year, Nunez this year, Carpenter, Tavarez, there has been luck involved. But I think Jocketty has been very good at finding players (mainly veterans) who are undervalued in the free agent market. Sanders at $3M per year was a bargain. So was Grudz at $1M this year, and Suppan at around $3M, and even Eckstein at $3M is a bargain when you consider that other FA shortstops like Renteria and Cabrera got 3 times as much money. I've been saying this all along... the Cards' domination of the NL Central the last 2 years has been a combination of good management and good luck People just forget that I acknowledge the first part of that. There is a facet of the game were one cannot deny the Cards have been extremely fortunate the last two seasons - SP, their top three SP have missed how many regular season starts as compared to the Cubs?
  20. Anyone know how many SP have the Cards have used the last two seasons? I'm guessing its <= than the number of SP the Cubs have used this season.
  21. I know the Cubs are done for the Reds this but, does anyone think Valentine should have been brushed back once or twice maybe, even hit the dirt?
  22. Or hockey, the Blackhawks may actually be decent this season... Pardon my ignorance, but hockey is what? I knew I was reaching at bit... The Black Hawks are that team that are always under the Red Wings in the standings....right? May change a bit this season, Hawks went out and signed 9 FA, Nikolai Khabibulin, amongst them...
  23. Or hockey, the Blackhawks may actually be decent this season... Pardon my ignorance, but hockey is what? I knew I was reaching at bit...
  24. Or hockey, the Blackhawks may actually be decent this season...
  25. The sad truth about this mistake in the use of Mitre is we'll get a chance to see it again before the season ends.
