  1. Forgive me for interrupting the larger conversation here, but I don't think that's remotely intriguing for Tampa. They seem to be hesitant to give Stamkos a Kane-like extension given their numerous young stars who will need to be paid. The idea of them trading away Hedman to acquire Kane's contract is insane, without even getting into the legal troubles. Other players would be moving in the deal as well. Presumably, the Hawks would have to take on some of Kane's Salary. The possibility of Kane and Stamkos on the same line is pretty intriguing. Hedman is very good but players like Kane don't become available very often. I will agree though that the trade is probably just speculation.
  2. I thought I read somewhere that the victim can't take money for dropping criminal charges. People will definitely forget. If the Hawks want to trade Kane they will be able to do so and Kane would be foolish to stand in the way provided that he wasn't getting traded to Buffalo or a team like Phoenix. I heard a rumor about Kane for Hedman which was pretty intriguing for both sides.
  3. I had several long posts on cubs.com explaining why none of that mattered. And when in doubt, "There's no way Hendry who built up this farm system over the last few years is going to hire a manger who'll destroy it." There was a lot of that going around. I distinctly remember Giants fans complaining about "forfeit Sundays" when Dusty would give all the good players the day off on the same day. They also complained about his unwillingness to play prospects but we laughed because our prospects were so good that he'd want to play them.
  4. Also they didn't produce any/many. Very true. Billy Hatcher mostly sucked, yet he looked great compared to other products of the Cubs farm system. Dave Martinez hung around a long time.
  5. Billy Hatcher comes to mind as a Cubs farmhand that had a decent career elsewhere. Before I knew anything about stats, I always wished the Cubs had kept Hatcher. I bring this up because the issue is not that the Cubs didn't produce any decent position players so much as they never got a lot of value out of the one's that did go on to have decent careers.
  6. If the Grand Jury indicts him, the DA has to bring it to trial, doesn't he? The idea that this is a CYA measure may just be the residue of public perception about what happened in Ferguson where the Grand Jury let the prosecutor off the hook in a case that he didn't want to bring to trial. Is it possible that they're trying to get Kane to agree to some sort of plea deal that would avoid a messy trial, give at least a modicum of justice while still allowing the victim to make a civil suit leading to a settlement? The lawyer signal is officially lit.
  7. Great opportunity to find the picture of Estes with the mop and bucket and photo shop Cahill's face over it.
  8. Even at the deadline, the Cubs weren't going to pass both the Cards and the Pirates and win the division. Would it really be worth trading a valuable long term asset for maybe a shot at hosting the one game playoff? I have no problem with Epstein dumpster diving for guys that might secure that 2nd wild card.
  9. It's not a sign of anything. He's guaranteed $30,657,000 over the next 4 years (which was praiseworthy this time last year.) Not exactly a low risk. There was hope some team would be willing to take on the full deal. It could still happen in the offseason, but the fact he went thru waivers unclaimed, at least lends to the likelihood that that's not happening now. It could also mean that they know the Cubs will pull him back so there's not really any point to claiming him. I'm sure that happens quite a bit.
  10. I didn't see the play live. In the replay it looked like it took a bad hop and ate him up but that gets scored an error all the time. I wouldn't have minded them trying to lay down a bunt either but I think Kruk knew full well they wouldn't. I can't say that I know this to be true but Don Mattingly seems like the type that wouldn't want his players breaking that unwritten rule. Also, they said the Cubs were taking the bunt away from Rollins but they still had the shift on. Why isn't Rollins trying to just put one in play in the gaping hole on the left side of the infield? That seems like a higher percentage play than bunting for a hit.
  11. John Kruk is the worst. I realize that statement needs little if any elaboration but he said two things that were amazingly dumb. He said the error on Castro should have been a hit. It seemed to me that Castro was pretty much square to the ball and it ate him up. Since when is that a hit. The second thing was in the eighth inning he said he wouldn't have a problem if Rollins had laid down a bunt. I'm not big on the unwritten rules of baseball but if Rollins had actually done it, I really doubt that Kruk would be ok with it afterwards.
  12. Not to derail this thread but I'm sure it dawned on at least one of his coaches to put him on the mound in High school. I'm guessing that experiment ended poorly.
  13. Teams put everybody through waivers and recall the people that get claimed that they want to keep. At least that's how it used to work. Clearing waivers would help his current value since it would make him available to any contender that wanted him as opposed to the first in line on the claim. Plus the level of desperation from the claiming team should also increase his value a little. Not that the Cubs would get anything great or even good but that's got little to do with whether or not he cleared waivers.
  14. Put Javy in Right field. Problem solved. By which I mean the problem of which infielder to put in right field when they've already have an outfielder available.
  15. Holtby got more or less the same contract as Crawford.
  16. Could the Cubs get anything for Coghlin? It's hard to imagine Schwarber out of the lineup or down to AAA once Montero gets back. I'm not saying Schwarber can't stick at catcher but guys with his ability to hit typically get switched to a less demanding position eventually unless they're Johnny Bench which Schwarber likely isn't.
  17. They'll re sign Kruger, even if it means trading Shaw.
  18. I saw elsewhere it being said that the Hawks were saving around $2.5mil. I'm guessing the Hawks waive Garbutt. If someone claims him they save another $900k. If he passes through waivers the Hawks will still have to pay him but save him entire $900k salary against the cap. This is essentially what they did when they traded Campbell for Rust-eez but under the new CBA, any salary over $900k counts against the cap even if the guy spends the whole season in the AHL.
  19. Pretty shocking that this was the best they can do for Sharp. This trade will be even worse since it could potentially cost them another useful but too expensive player. At SCH, the click-bait guy wrote an article today about trading Shaw. That seems less far fetched unless they can dump these guys on someone else for virtually nothing.
  20. Daley sucks. Garbutt can kill penalties and has some speed. He's also a dirtbag.
  21. Why would anybody take him? He's only had a brief period of solid play, has a huge contract and is suffering from vertigo. That brief period happened to be when it mattered most. "Playoff Bickell" was MIA this year in terms of goals but casual fans will remember him as the guy that had a great run during the playoffs. Also, there are teams that value big guys that hit people. Someone, somewhere is making the argument that Bickell hitting people helped win the Ducks series. Finally, there are teams that need to rweach the cap floor. Getting a guy with Bickell's potential for a draft pick wouldn't be a bad move if he were healthy. Once he can show that, they'll be able to find a taker. If he can't they might be able to LTIR him.
  22. i really like that trade now Wish it was only one year but at that salary there's really no risk of that contract being a burden.
  23. Lumbus is a term of affection. I will stop.
  24. Here's a fun exercise: How many teams in the NHL have a player on their roster that won a Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks? In the East, I have: Detroit- Richards Lumbus- Saad Florida- Campbell Isles- Leddy Phil- Emery whoever just got Niemi- Niemi In the West: St. Louis- Brouewer Calgary- Frolik Jets- Ladd and Dat Buffrin guy PHx- Vermette Sha arks- Smith
