  1. Football isn't like baseball. You can't just insert a guy into the lineup and be fine. They need to know the playbook and it takes time. Draft picks are also much more valuable in football since guys contribute to the team the year they are drafted. Anecdotally, football players seem like they are more a product of the system and that perceived value doesn't always translate to a different team. Matt Cassel comes to mind.
  2. He's most dangerous when he feels like he has something to prove. He had a good shot at the Hart trophy (MVP) and a decent chance at the Art Ross (scoring title) before he got hurt last season. A full season with a real center and a LW that can bury the chances Kane gives him will go a long way toward helping him win one or both of those awards.
  3. isn't sandbagging in the regular season the mark of an experienced and perrenial cup contender? I'm not sure that sandbagging is the most accurate term. It's more a matter of picking your battles and pacing themselves. Sandbagging implies an attempt to convince others that you're not as good as you really are. I doubt anybody is buying that the Hawks aren't still favored to at least reach the WCF.
  4. Toews and Hossa seem to be feeling the effects of the short off season. Or they are hurt. The Rockford shuttle has been running non stop but to what end? I can't help feel that they are auditioning replacements for pieces they might need to move if Roszy doesn't pan out. Specifically, the guy that the Hawks can most afford to lose that someone would actually want is Shaw. Hartman, Baun, and Hinostraza are basically Shaw before he had some 20 goal seasons. Either these guys have been showcased for trade or the Hawks are trying to gauge their options if they do wind up trading for a defenseman. It would be great if they could include Daley in that deal as he's been about as bad as advertised. Rundblad sitting in the press box does no one any good. By no means does this mean he should be playing. He might not clear waivers but at this point doesn't even really matter?
  5. Rizzo was able to make the adjustments to do better against LH pitching. Schwarber has a good work ethic so it's reasonable to expect his splits to get better next season. While we're being optimistic, Contreras might be able to help provide some balance.
  6. Looking at the Bears schedule, it would be pretty hard to tank effectively enough to get a better pick. Assuming they won't beat Denver or win at GB, the rest of the schedule are winnable games. at St Louis vs SF VS Washington at Minn at Tampa vs Detroit They could finish 8-8 or 9-7
  7. Why do you need to get one of those? Is it going to get you laid? You're a really strange person.
  8. This. Costas: "Barring any more heroics from Ryne Sandberg, Willie McGee is your player of the game." "Hold everything". I remember Dernier drew a walk with 2 strikes just before this HR. I think it was Young Dave Owen that drove in the winning run later on.
  9. I haven't watched the game and only some of the last one but isn't it hard to evaluate his performance when the defense consists of Hammer, Seabrook and a bunch of 6th defensemen probably, I'm just at the game and he blows from my angle. An expensive goalie should stop some shots Crawford has, for the most part, kept the Hawks afloat. So long as the recent slump is the exception rather than the rule he'll be fine.
  10. I went to Mt. Vernon on a field trip on Friday. I saw a guy with an Orioles Arrieta shersey. I need to get one of those. The locals assume I'm an O's fan since I live here. Or maybe I'll wait for the Cubs to sign Weiters.
  11. These are the kind of things that happen when you have a bunch of young guys getting experience. In other news, they sent Hartman back down so Hossa is probably back for the Devil's game.
  12. The DA said he couldn't prove that anything happened. I think a lot of people are taking that and spinning it however it best supports their opinion. I feel like something bad happened to her and Kane was in some way involved. Which brings us right back where we were several weeks ago when Gooney said (I'm paraphrasing) that we'll never really know what happened but Kane should never be admired again.
  13. If Fowler wants say a 5 year deal then Almora arriving might make them want to go in a different direction. It's not inconceivable that they'd want to get a placeholder for CF to see if Almora turns into anything. Hopefully, that placeholder is Heyward who then slides over to RF once Almora is ready- if that actually happens.
  14. I kinda miss Dusty's cryptic fishing metaphors. I hope he fires Niefi as his 3rd base coach.
  15. I'm sure they are. I doubt Heyward would though. Some team will offer him a 7 year deal for a lot of money. That would be pretty hard to pass up since he'd still, in theory, be able to get one last contract after that if he's still productive. Other than playing in front of the BFIB, what other reason would he have to stay in St. Louis? It's not a great city, certainly not worth giving up millions of dollars. He's only been there for 1 season so it's not like he has deep roots there. There's no guarantee that the Cards will continue to make the playoffs considering the talent and youth in the division.
  16. Didn't the Bears take Stan Thomas with the #7 pick? They need to lose more games so they can pick 3rd or 4th.
  17. I guess we'll find out on Weds. It shouldn't come as much of a surprise.
  18. Austin Jackson? If he could hit better than he showed as a Cub, yes. Let's say that the Cubs keep Soler and have Schwarber catch about 30 games. That would open up potentially 60-70 starts (depending on the health and performance of Soler) for Coghlan. That would probably be ok if they signed Heyward for CF. Though the defense would be lucky to be only "merely bad".
  19. I'm sick imagining that team Who's Starlin Castro? I think the rest of these projections are dead on.
  20. Coghlan is a tough case. He still sees himself as a starter. Maddon seems to like him. But his future is completely dependent on the other moves the Cubs make. A RH version of Coghlan with better defense would be a better fit. That doesn't seem like it would be that hard to find.
  21. [tweet] [/tweet] That will do it. In hindsight, trading for Tulo was a bad idea even though he almost single handedly turned their season from also ran to division winner. By that standard, no trade is ever worth it unless you win the WS
  22. Stupid fat face. DONUTS!
  23. I get that it's faster paced and it seems to lead to more goals vs shootouts but I'm not a huge fan No shootouts means I love it. Also, the Hawks should petition the league to play the entire game 3 on 3, because clearly they are awesome at it. Have to wonder though, if Keith was healthy, would he be part of that 1st OT unit with daydream nation? Also, we haven't even seen who the 2nd unit would be: Anisimov, Panarin and Hjammer?
  24. That post had so many weird syatements. My favorite was we don't need a big splash this year because "credibility". I took that to mean that signing a big name to placate the fans no longer is something they would consider. That kind of goes without saying though. If "built for the regular season, not the playoffs" means only having 2 starting pitchers that you feel good about giving the ball to in a short series, there's cause for concern there. But those two things aren't mutually exclusive. David Price, for example, would probably help win some regular season games.
  25. People talk about how 3rd base has been a black hole for the Cubs for a long time and rightfully so. You could make a case that LF hasn't been all that much better. Schwarber fills that hole. It would have to be a great offer. I agree completely on the second part.
