  1. Theo's ego is big enough that he won't want to leave a team primed for a long run of success. As for ownership, each 1% is worth about $13 million, so spread over a 5 year contract you add $2.6 million per year. 5 yrs/ $25 million in salary with 2% ownership is worth well over $10 million per year. If he did walk, that would bring him full circle from when he won in Boston because a winner was already in place- at least that's what Yankees fans always say.

  3. When you have 2 of the top 5 players on Earth and evaluate talent well, it's going to be hard to be anything less. I've only seen them a couple times this year, but I think they are more explosive than they may have ever been. At times, yes, but there have been stretches where Kane's line was the only one scoring. Toews and Hossa are both having sub par seasons for them. Shaw is not the answer on the top line and the bottom pair on defense ranges from barely adequate to awful. Don't get me wrong, it's been a lot of fun to see them beat up on teams lately. To repeat, they're going to need another defenseman and a real solution at 1LW.
  4. Is Gordon really that key to them? He seems more like a nice guy to have around to a disinterested observer. Though it is meaningful that anyone who could walk didn't. I mean he's averaged 5.5 wins over the last 5 seasons and that number is being held down by 2.8 wins over 104 games last year. Obviously age is a factor but based on his last 5 seasons he's certainly a key piece of their team. and 2.8 wins in 104 games is roughly a 4.2ish win full season pace I pay almost no attention to teams like the Royals. When I think of them, I think of Hossmer and Morales being the important guys. I was surprised to see that Gordon is right up there with them.
  5. Johansen is lazy. He played below his potential for a few years, had a great season last year, got paid, and then showed up out of shape again. He's been terrible. No one will miss him. He's not the franchise player Yeah, people that are saying that the Preds "won" this trade are saying that because they filled a big need from a position of strength. 3 years from now the Preds will really regret trading Seth Jones. Maybe sooner depending on how Johansen adjusts to playing in the Western Conference.
  6. He's better at 2nd base and they want to win the playoffs. Do winter league teams actually GAS about having Baez learn a new position?

  8. We have someone like that in the school system. I like to think of him as the director of mines, parks and Indians which is a very old F Troop reference but I think still applies to the miscellaneous nature of that position.
  9. That's the argument for 3 on 3 OT right there.
  10. I heard that Mike Shannahan is interviewing for the Miami and SF jobs.
  11. Hawks recall Denault. This means that Kruger is probably going to be out "a bit" which is Q code for at least 4 or 5 games. http://www.secondcityhockey.com/2015/12/18/10590140/blackhawks-recall-phillip-danault-ahl-rockford-icehogs-roster-2015
  12. Wouldn't Cowgirl require even less effort?
  13. Maybe he'd like to take over the USMNT?
  14. Ice is slippery
  15. I'm not sure about that price, but I'd like Cashner if he can be had relatively cheaply. Do you mean that the Pads would want more? Or maybe both teams add other pieces to balance out the deal in terms of control of the players involved. The Pads will be tanking this year so they might want to keep Cashner around in the hope of a bigger payoff at the deadline.
  16. I read a few things from Pens fans applauding the move. Granted they are disgruntled at the moment, but they seem to hate Scuderi. Scuderi is old and slow but the Pens are paying part of his salary. This move likely doesn't help the Hawks very much unless they actually find a 2nd pairing guy to play opposite Seabrook. It does give them an extra ~1.3 million to play with. If they traded Shaw with a $2 mildo cap cap that puts them in the ballpark of actually being able to get somebody. Shaw is a fan favorite but he makes too much money for what he does. Someone will overpay for Shaw. Lead them to water, Stan. Considering he was a 5th round pick, it won't be too hard to get a good return. It would be great if they could send him and Rundblad somewhere for a not that young anymore but not Scuderi old defenseman.
  17. This. I remember back in 1984 the Cubs were playing the Dodgers and they ran Bill Russell out to CF during the series. Russell (normally a SS) said that playing CF was like a day off since he didn't have to worry about who was covering second, moving behind base runners on 2nd all the other little things that a middle infielder has to do over the course of a game. Maybe getting Zobrist some time in the OF with Baez at second helps keep his bat in the lineup without wearing him down.

  19. My dilemma with my kids is finding the balance between just letting them have fun and trying to instill a good work ethic. My daughter started playing field hockey in 3rd grade. She loved it and always wanted to practice whenever we had a chance. That made her better than most of the other kids until they got old enough for travel leagues. Then they caught up and surpassed her. Now she doesn't want to practice much except for right before the season starts. I've always told her that I would be fine with her not playing but if she is going to play I'd want her to give it her best. I guess in some ways it's like piano lessons. Few kids want to take piano but they wind up being glad their parents forced them to take piano later in life. Playing a team sport isn't a life skill but I think that it maybe leads to a more active and healthier lifestyle.
  20. Baseball (and really any sports) jerseys are so damn expensive that I can't imagine buying one for a current player unless he's a slam dunk legend. I ended up just getting a Santo when I finally did get one because I wanted to make sure it would always be relevant. I was deciding which Hawks jersey to buy had had narrowed it down to Saad, Kane and Hossa. At the last moment I decided on Hossa. Really dodged a bullet with that choice. In a related story, the other day I saw a guy wearing a Toews home red (keep in mind that I live in MD and there are maybe 4 other hockey fans within 100 miles). He had it over a hoodie and was wearing it as a sweater/ light jacket. Fair or foul?
  21. What if they're faux wood?
  22. Warning: reading the article will make you sad, angry and disgusted all at the same time.
  23. I umpired a 9-10 game last summer. One team was winning by maybe 25 runs. The parents on that team were still complaining about the strikes I was calling on their team, which was essentially anything that could even remotely be considering a strike- a feat that happened perhaps every 6th pitch. It was the last inning and they were the visitors so there was no run limit. I was hoping that after every kid on that team batted in that inning that the coach would let the other team bat. Nope. For a while, I really felt like the game might never end.
  24. Then again, a lot look like they are exactly the same but are unlicensed. My nephew got a Dexter Fowler jersey (sort of as a joke) and I couldn't tell the difference.
  25. Field Hockey parents are the worst. It's the hardest sport I've ever seen with regards to understanding the rules. Every year they add 5 new rules or change 7 already existing rules. The net effect of this is that the parents think they know the rules better than they actually do. As if that wasn't bad enough, rules are enforced differently in travel leagues than they are on the local level. So coaches, parents and players all have a different understanding of the rules than the referee. Everything is a foul on the other team. The ones that scream the whole time have plenty to scream about. The younger the players are, the worse it gets. For example, if the ball touches a players foot (really their leg below the knee) that player has committed a foul. When they're young, like 3rd grade, this happens a lot. So the referee can't call it every time. whenever they don't call it the parents of the opposing team lose their [expletive].
