  1. To make a playoff work it has to be 8 teams with 4 of the BCS games comprising the first round. To satisfy the traditionalists, the games will go back to the traditional match ups i.e. Big 10 - Pac 10 Rose Bowl etc. Automatic bids Big 10 Pac 10 Big 12 SEC ACC Big East plus 2 wild cards to be determined by the rankings. A perfect system? No. But certainly the most practical. Potentially a 3rd good team could miss the playoffs because of a weak conference's automatic bid. Too bad. That happens in sports all the time (the 2005 Padres for example) This adds two weeks to the season for the Championship game.
  2. But not as good as Rambo IV (also in the works.) Is Rambo going after Saddam Hussein?
  3. No beer and no TV makes Homer go crazy That's less encouraging
  4. And the worst of the 4 defensively would actually be the one playing SS. Why wouldn't Jeter move to CF in that scenario? Wouldn't that extend his career? It would also be a way to stick it to A Rod and make him look good at the same time. There's also the whole Jeter isn't as good defensively as Furcal aspect too.
  5. Jose Oquendo, otherwise Willie McGee
  6. I believe the Cubs can and have done worse than Gibbons. Gibbons seems like exactly the type of guy that Hendry likes. Relatively young, productive but yet to break out, somewhat unwanted in his current surroundings and relatively cheap. Gibbons batting 5th behind Ramirez and ahead of Murton breaks up the string of RH bats.
  7. I blame the Black Sox. They soured my then 11 year old Grandfather on the Sox and got him to become more of a Cubs fan. We've been Cubs fans ever since. As an aside, My Grandfather was born in 1908. He still goes to Cubs games.
  8. And why would Oakland take that? I'm pretty sure they get a much better offer from another team. Zito is a FA after this season, that lowers his value. Wellemeyer has a good fastball with some upside. Sing is coming off two very good years and shows the type of skills that the A's like. Williams is a nice addition to their rotation is young and durable. The A's also clear a lot of payroll. Admittedly, the A's might need Novoa instead of Wellemeyer or perhaps another name player for PR purposes. If they want that much more then he's not worth it. Not when the Cubs still likely need to trade for a RF.
  9. What about Williams, Wellemeyer and Sing for Zito? Wellemeyer is out of options. Sing is likely blocked by whomever the Cubs get to play RF and by the presence of Dusty Baker.
  10. I doubt Van Buren makes the team either but there still isn't room for Koronka unless someone gets hurt.
  11. With the people they already have Locks Dempster Williamson Rusch Very likely Ohman Wuertz Novoa (unless he's traded) Guys ahead of Koronka Van Buren Hill Guzman (though probably unlikely) Still hanging around Bartosh Norton That doesn't leave much room for Koronka especially considering Wellemeyer, Mitre and Leicester are all out of options. Add in the liklihood of acquiring a reliever via trade or FA and there's even less of a chance. The Cubs may want to keep Hill at Iowa as a starter. On the other hand, Hill isn't getting any younger and could likely be a dominant reliever right now if the Cubs chose to add a 3rd LH to the pen.
  12. Was Perez's contract the price of gettiung Furcal? Perhaps Hendry grossly overpaying Perez helped grease the wheels. Since Cedeno is making league minimum the cost of overpaying Perez balances out. Now depending on who the Cubs get to play CF, there's a good chance that we'll see Perez batting 8th and perhaps splitting time with Cedeno. Not the best of all possible worlds but at least Perez won't be at the top of the order.
  13. Besides being a jerk Rosenhaus has the added dimension of incompetence. Reporter" Besides getting him kicked off the team, what have you done for T.O.?" Rosenhaus "Next Question"
  14. I was hoping he had retired, moved to Japan or given back $3 million. Oh well.
  15. Perhaps Hendry intends to trade Williams for that very reason for an OF bat because of the thin FA pool. ON that level bringing in another SP makes a lot of sense. It seems like Hendry subscribes to the notion that great pitching will win despite lousy hitting. He could cite the 2005 Astros as an example. Not saying I agree with that philosophy but Hendry's "guys that can catch" line sort of supports that.
  16. Benson seems like exactly the type of pitcher that Hendry would covet. Your use of the word covet is a natural segue to the inevitable mention of Anna Benson that must ensue.
  17. As I see it, Hendry's plan is to build the team around pitching and defense. If your greatest strength is pitching than it stands to reason that you shouldn't undermine that strength by having inadequate up the middle defense. Of course it's important that these teams get good production from the corners. Going in to 2006, Hendry probably feels that he will get solid-good production from 3/4 corner positions with RF still being a concern. Hnedrya also likely feels that any offensive shortcomings from CF, SS, or 2nd are lessened by the better than average production from the catcher position. There's really only one way to "plan" for timely hitting and that is to get the best hitters that you can find and let them use their skills. The best argument against small ball would be the 2005 Astros during the WS. They gave away way too many outs which seems like a really bad idea against a good pitching staff.I find it ironic that during the playoffs, when every AB is very important, that any team would ever bunt with a non pitcher before the 7th inning.
  18. I'm torn on this one. On the one hand I agree with what NY is saying about character being important to Hendry. On the other hand, Hendry also likes guys that can play. Aramis Ramirez had some work ethic questions but Hendry still went out and got him. Similarly, Walker seemed to wear out his welcome on multiple clubs.
  19. Sarcasm? If Bradley produces, I am fine with him hating all peoples, Jeff Kent and his family included. None at all. Both Baker and Bradley are African-American. Hopefully, Bradley will believe that Dusty can relate to his struggles, whether those are perceived or real. Dusty is supposed to have a reputation to soothe the savage souls. Hopefully, he can work his magic with Bradley. I'd definitely take a flyer on him. The Dodgers are likely to trade him away cheaply, and I'd love for the Cubs to benefit from it. I'm not so sure he'll be all that cheap. There are multiple teams that need a CF which creates more of a seller's market. Also, credit the Dodgers for not painting themselves into a corner with regards to trading Bradley. They probably will move him but they expect value in return.
  20. WHAT? Anyone have an explanation for this? :-# Cubs wanted to get him out of there before he got lit up so they could trade him? Maybe they saw what they needed to see to make their decision.
  21. The difference being that McGee had more power than Furcal and Coleman knew how to steal bases without getting thrown out 45% of the time. huh? furcal has far more power than mcgee. willie had 79 hr's in 7649 ab's while furcal has 45 in 2642 ab's. as far as sb's, furcal has been caught stealing 28% in his career while pierre is at 36% (30% in 05). Ballparks were much bigger when McGee played. Back then if a guy hit 30 HRs it was a phenominal year. How do their career slg % stack up? that would probably tell a better story than HRs. Sorry for guessing that Pierre gets thrown out 4 out of 10 tries when it should be 3.5 out of 10. SB % under 75% succesful really isn't worth it.
  22. The difference being that McGee had more power than Furcal and Coleman knew how to steal bases without getting thrown out 45% of the time. I thought I saw it posted somewhere else the Furcal had a success rate of over 80% on stolen bases. Could be. I was referring to Pierre.
  23. The difference being that McGee had more power than Furcal and Coleman knew how to steal bases without getting thrown out 45% of the time.
  24. Go look at Clemens game log. Using the Joe Morgan philosophy, one might say that neither of them knows how to win. Don't be silly, Zambrano doesn't know how to win. Clemens merely forgot. One thing is certain, neither of them were valuable to their respective teams.
  25. If I was there I'd give him a standing ovation. Me too. How people can be so ignorant to forget what he did for us for so long bewilders me. I can just hear Dusty Baker crying to reporters about how Cub fans boo their own team but cheer for Sosa.
