  1. From a linguistic standpoint Tampa Bay Rays sounds terrible. I'm going to refer to them as the Tampa Brays until they change it again.
  2. With his offensive production, who cares? I'm curious if ARod still wants to play SS. He seems to be pretty vain and I'm not sure if he wants to make that switch, has anyone heard him (ARod) mention this at all? If he is vain, wouldn't that mean he'd want to return to SS? When he went to the Yankees, he agreed willingly to switch to 3rd base. If he really wanted to be a Cub and the Cubs could pay him, I'm sure he'd play RF if asked. In fact I bet we'll here some statement to that effect in the near future if for no other reason than to keep the thought of the Cubs being in on the bidding alive.
  3. Reminds me of the Luis Castillo thread a few weeks ago. 1-2 yrs ago Hendry would have been worshipped if he signed/traded for him. Matsui was playing SS in Japan and 5 years ago the Cubs needed a SS. Funny how the Cubs weren't interested then because they didn't know if he'd be any good. Now that they know he's not very good they're interested. If the Cubs had signed Castillo they wouldn't have been as tempted to trade for Pierre. That alone would have made the signing worthwhile.
  4. The Cubs have galdly spent 4 million on players a lot worse than Prior. Even if he wasn't available until after the ASB that means they'd be paying him less than what they're paying Marquis. I doubt the team option sounds nearly as bad of an idea to Prior. It would only be one year and it probably helps him get a bigger payday in the long run if he returns to form. If he doesn't than it won't matter much to him or anyone else.
  5. How about Jones and Marquis for Drew in a sort of salary dump type trade for the Sox? Jones is not ideal but he's a decent complementary player in a lineup that is already stacked. They could probably flip Marquis somewhere else or use him in long relief. The Sox would also save having to pay the last 3 years of Drew's contract.
  6. Sosa as part of a platoon in RF playing only against LHP is certainly a great story. The one year farewell tour would make next year's WS championship even better. But not at 7 million. The dilemna for Sosa is that money= respect and playing for what teams would offer would make him look foolish- or make him look like he should just retire.
  7. If the Cubs were to reacquire Pierre we should no longer refer to him as 43 but Juan for 5 which is his new Dodgers nickname. If Hendry traded for Pierre, he could then flip Pierre to another team looking for that leadoff/ CF guy that so many teams seem to covet. Also, as a FA traded in the middle of a multi year contract Pierre could void his contract or demand to be traded couldn't he?
  8. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/rumors/post/Cubs-keep-Ward-pass-on-Trachsel-Floyd;_ylt=Allt2qfu3rVF.8XNgpCcdqE5nYcB?urn=mlb,52224 Good: Cubs bring back Ward Better: Cubs won't bring back Floyd Best: Cubs won't bring back Trachsel Maybe Hendry has learned something
  9. Not to mention any number of other OFers who have played for winning teams. And it's no guarantee that he's just going to get bigger and slower. He's playing in freaking Miami, with absolutely nobody paying attention, and little to no leadership on the team. He's the veteran with that squad. And he's had about 4 different managers already. Put him on a team like the Cubs, with Lou in charge, guys like Lee, Soriano and Ramirez, guys who are not only respected veterans, but some Latino stars as well as a guy who once play with Miggy, and I have very little doubt the Cubs could get the most out of him. I'd bet that Cabrera could stay in good enough shape to play OF until Lee's contract runs out. If not I'd trade Lee to make room for Cabrera at 1st if it came down to that.
  10. Aren't you forgetting that Cabrera played for the 2003 Marlins? That alone should spark Hendry's interest even if he is good.
  11. The cold hard facts regarding Wood is that the Cubs are already spending a lot of money on the BP since they are paying 4 guys (Howry, Eyre, Wood and Dempster) closer money. While it's nice to have Kerry Wood as an effective every 3rd day/ 7th inning try to hold them close guy, the real issue is could that money be better spent elsewhere.
  12. How much of a factor should defense be in these considerations? Piazza, for example was pretty lousy defensively for a good chunk of his career but his offensively numbers can't be ignored. Should he drop down the list because of his defense? If he was an OF/ 1st base the answer would be no but at a defense first position the answer is less clear.
  13. I'd move Wright to LF to make room for Arod at 3rd. Wright has already said he would be willing to move.
  14. I'd take Cabrera for Marquis. If he ever figures it out he could be really good.
  15. Is that because Wood is now a reliever? Prior has a lot more upside
  16. Dude you just ruined my day. P.S. Do you go to Marquette? If it's any consolation there was never really any chance that the O's would have actually made such a trade.
  17. I would vote yes if it meant getting rid of the useless extra umpires that stand 20 ft behind the actual umpires instead of in the OF gaps where they might actually be able to get into position to make a correct call. The vote would be no for the regular season.
  18. The word around here is that Bedard isn't a good clubhouse guy. His talent ought to supercede that but we're talking about MacPhail and some other parts of the former Cubs brain trust. I could see Bedard getting traded. I wonder how much his late season injury hurts his value though and how that affects the O's willingness to trade him. Change Ohman to Hill and maybe they go for the original deal.
  19. Curt Schilling is a FA. Under what circumstances would you consider making him an offer? I realize -and agree- that offense should be the biggest priority but having another SP better than Marquis and Marshall would certainly make the Cubs more of a force- especially during the playoffs.
  20. I've never believed in a Cubs curse or any such nonsense but if Prior and Wood won a WS in Cincy with Baker as Manager that would pretty much convince me.
  21. How about game 1 in a nuetral sight, keep the series at 7 games and eliminate homefield advantage? That would make it a 1-2-2-1-1 format. That would accomplish the whole "make it an event" idea without dragging it on an extra week.
  22. This topic makes me wonder. When they say player X was traded to team Y for a PTBNL or cash what is the least amount of cash sent back in return for a player? In the case of Izturis maybe $20 was ok.
  23. You forgot that is has to be a pitcher with injury issues, preferrably recovering from rotator cuff surgery.
  24. Did Mattingly play long enough to get a ring? Girardi got a ring. By that logic Girardi is a true Yankee and Mattingly isn't. :D Pena was the token minority interview.
