  1. I think he played a couple games at SS during ST this year. It's hard not to like a guy like Fontenot but even a Soriano level OF would have caught that ball today. I guess that means Harold Reynolds and I agree. Maybe I have a concussion because I actually checked to see who was playing the ESPN game tonight.
  2. By my standards, 5 innings of 2 hit, 10 K pitching is a quality start, you'd be stupid to think otherwise, official rulings aside. i don't think that a guy who enters a ballgame 4-1 ballgame with the bases empty, 2 outs in the 9th inning and gets one out has really saved much of anything. are we going to stop referring to that as a save as well? likewise, let's stop saying that a pitcher on the wrong end of a 1-0 game got the loss. the offense got the loss; that pitcher was a winner all the way. OK by me. Saves and wins are dumb stats.
  3. Really? I would like to hear your reasoning as I agree, ANTZ was better Antz had Woody Allen and it's hard to get past his personal life. Also the Antz were kind of scary looking for the kids. Do you really have a hard time getting past the personal life of a voice in a cartoon? Only when that voice is Woody Allen. We're not talking about Joey from Full House here; Woody Allen has a very distinct voice. So yes, after he started having sex with his wife's teenage daughter that kind of ruined it for me. Then there's the part where Antz just isn't as good as Bug's Life
  4. Why would Epstein & Co want to go from overpaying Ramirez for two more months to overpaying Soriano for six years? There's also the whole issue that Soriano is an inferior hitter to Ramirez. It's not about the money. It's about the whole "Manny being Manny" striking out on purpose, hitting the travelling secretary, whining about how they don't respect him and so on.
  5. How about Soriano to Boston for Manny Ramirez? Granted it would never happen but it would sure benefit both teams. The Cubs could slide Theriot and Fukudome into the 1-2 spots as well as getting rid of Soriano's awful contract. For Boston, Soriano's power in the leadoff spot is that much more useful without the pitcher batting 9th. Soriano is not as good as Ramirez but the Red Sox seem to be tired of his act.

  7. So I took my son to the driving range and all I had with me were my woods, wedges and my 2 iron because I stripped off my old grips and haven't had a chance to put the new ones on. I haven't picked up that 2 iron in about 5 years but I teed up a few shots with it and low and behold I was actually able to hit it pretty well.
  8. I think you are thinking about ANTZ...which was a superior movie to a Bug's Life, but was done by Dreamworks, not Pixar. I've seen a Bugs Life at least a dozen times. I'm not thinking of Antz which was more about blindly following the crowd.
  9. Before the season started a lot of people were picking the Reds to be the surprise team in the Centraal and most people expected them to finish no worse than 3rd. Thus they had expectations and hired the "proven Manager." Ironically, they're probably lucky they fell out of the race otherwise Baker would be running Cueto and Volquez into the ground. He still might do that anyway to avoid 90 losses or try to finsh .500.
  10. The only bad part of this call up is that after pitvhing today or maybe tomorrow he will assume the Wuertz/ Lieber role of guy that doesn't pitch unless there's extra innings or somebody dies. Which means that the already overworked guys will be overworked that much more. Of course that's probably true of whoever they brought up.
  11. that's kind of a stretch. I haven't seen it in a while, but I think the metaphor is much more general than that. The ants have their own ordered society, so they don't really fit into a strict "proletariat" mold, and the grasshoppers or katydids or whatever those things are don't wear culottes, so they clearly aren't the bourgeoisie. either way, it's a tired metaphor Monsters Inc. ftw By 1848 no one was wearing culottes. Worker ants unite to overthrow their useless overlords. Then they start an ideallistic society that thrives and makes unbriddled progress. Flick's epiphany is the very embodiment of class consciousness.
  12. A Bugs Life is a metaphor for the Communist overthrow of the Bourgouisie. I'd say Monster's Inc but my daughter watched it about 400 times and that kinda ruined it a little. My son says that Wall e is better than Star Wars but I haven't seen it yet. That leaves Toy Story as the top choice.
  13. and what do you call them? Hopefully something that doesn't include the term "snowball." Andy's balls. It was his wife's recipe. SNL stole that joke with Pete Schwetty balls.
  14. I'll never forget when they retired Dick Butkus' number at Illinois. Some genius scheduled Nebraska that day and they were up like 42-0 at half time. Butkus' acceptance speech in it's entirety: "Thank you for this great honor. Enjoy the 2nd half  " It's hard to imagine anyone wearing # 23 for the Cubs but the same thing would be accomplished by just not issuing that number until only the old timers remember that guy. I'd be ok with Felix Pie wearing #14 since people know Ernie Banks but people that never saw him play don't really care what his number was.
  15. Don't Howry and Eyre both come off the books after this year? It seems to me that the Cubs can afford to overpay for Fuentes as they have a good chance of being able to afford re signing him. Hendry has never shyed away from spending big on BP guys and has done worse than Fuentes. That would also give them insurance against having to overpay Wood if he decided that he wanted to get paid frontline closer money somewhere else.
  16. I think people forget that Bartman was -and still is- a big Cubs fan.
  17. Sorry, MojoPin and I got a little carried away. I was hoping to see the HCCF malfunctioning robot :(
  18. Ugh. It's bad enough that we have Soriano locked into 1 spot b/c he allegedly can't hit anywhere else in the lineup. Let's not extend this to others as well. From what I've heard about the Japanese league, they are pretty rigid about the responsibilities of the different spots in the lineup. I've heard that as the explanation for why Fukodome didn't steal as many bases as you'd think he could when he was in Japan. As a #3 hitter he was expected to drive in runs, stealing bases was for 1-2 hitters. I also seem to remember during ST that he didn't want to bat 2nd because he thought that would mean he would have to bunt a lot. Seeing as how his struggles tend to coincide with being moved up in the order, its possible that it may be part of the problem.
  19. Johnson should never start a game in RF or LF ever. He's fine as a platoon partner for Edmonds in CF but should be the last option anywhere else.
  20. no, not really. yeah, in the beginning of the season, people wanted to see cedeno get the majority of the playing time. is anyone still beating that drum though? i think everyone here wants theriot to have the majority of the playing time. i think some of you just make things up. Comparing the treatment of Fukudome to that of Theriot is somewhat legit. The big difference is that Fukudome has a better, longer track record against higher competition. Theriot had one good month and 5 mediocre to bad ones; hence the concern going into this season.
  21. Why is it unlikely that he left because of an emergency? Much as I loathe Joe Morgan, I have trouble believing he blew this off just because Sandberg was there. Maybe they refused to name him king of the HOF or something.
  22. Are you lost? Try the general baseball forum for discussions of other teams. Otherwise, enjoy your short stay.
  23. Fukudome's struggles: Cause for concern: yes. Cause for panic: no.
  24. My two biggest complaints about resort golf: 1. The high price becomes a badge of honor. I never understood why our members at the club I worked at would whine about our $11 cart fee but would then brag about going away and paying $125 to play Clustered Ponds or whatever 2. The ridiculous holes they put in there because they want to be unique/ becuase they can. A 225 yard par 3 by the water may be picturesque but it's pretty much impossible to hit and then hold that island green. Stop punishing us. The last course that I worked at was a shorter, wide open bombs away type course that had sneaky defense if you weren't careful but it was fun to play.
  25. I can't see them adding Dubois to the 40 man roster just for one week when they can bring up Hoffpauir instead.
