  1. To those of us that grew up in the 70s- early 80s those scenes were the rule not the exception. Back then you could sneak up to the box seats after the third inning and the ushers didn't even care because it made the place look less empty on TV. With the Cubs success over the last 10 years, the fans have been much more likely to boo their own players as has been well documented. The difference is that Cub fans take a lot longer time before they start booing a bad player. In my experience, people from Philly are basically low class, cheap rude, jerks and that reputation seems to follow them whereever they go because it is perpetuated by the media. Of course, the same people that talk about Philly fans booing Santa Clause are the same ones that say Cub fans don't really want to win the WS because they wouldn't be able to complain about not having won.
  2. Why wouldn't they just go ahead and put Cueto on the DL? Any smart organization would be trying to limit his innings at this point anyway.
  3. Webb or most anyone else is not as good on short rest. Though I don't have any stats to back that up I'm pretty sure recent history bears out that. How many series go 7 games anyway.
  4. I feel the same way about Canada.
  5. The big difference being that any Cub win reduces the magic number regardless of what other teams do.
  6. I think the most plasusible explanation for his poor K numbers until recently is that when he signed he was given strict instructions to work on his secondary pitches. This with the understanding that he would move up the ladder faster once he showed progress with his breaking stuff. Apparently he did just that and the organization liked what they saw enough to give him a chance. Whether he can sustain the success- who knows. Someone on XM (Sickels?) compared him to Farnsworth but I think that's a little unfair.
  7. Playing Tampa or Minnesota would be great since 2 of our better hitters (Soriano and Ramirez) seem to do not as well in colder weather and the domes would take that out of the equation. Of course it really doesn't matter. ESPN will still lead with the story "Team other than the Yankees or Red Sox won something now let's talk about Tom Brady and Brett Favre."
  8. I don't believe there's any doubt he'll pitch more innings, the question is how many runs will he have given up by then.
  9. The odd circumstances of his injury aside, I don't think Lieber was in the Cubs postseason roster plans unless something bad happened. I agree but Hendry likes to think of himself as a guy who does right by his vets (McGriff chasing a meaningless record instead of Choi learning to hit) so its not impossible even though unlikely.
  10. Jon Lieber won't be the first guy to, shall we say, "exaggerate", an injury in order to help the team by creating a space on the 25 man roster. Of course the Cubs, like every other team, aren't going to public with this. Still, I suppose it is possible that Lieber actually was hurt at the exact moment when it was particularly convenient for the Cubs.
  11. Was that good for 8th place? Around here any time there's a scramble the winning team breaks 60. Want to really have some fun, try this format: 2 man scarmble on the front 9 alternating shot on the back. Alternating shot is a true test of friendship. There's no worse feeling in the world than when your partner hits you 2nd shot to the frings on a par 5 and then you flub the chip shot leaving him a 10 foot birdie put.
  12. Rotation- 4 man to avoid anyone going on short rest Zambrano Harden Dempster Lilliy BP- 7 which allows for an extra position player, possibly a RH hitter with some power. Wood Marmol Simardzilla Cotts Marshall Guzman- Piniella will want another power arm Gaudin The X factor is Jon Lieber. Did Hendry promise him a playoff spot in exchange for his "Foot injury?" He'd replace Guzman or Gaudin unless someone else is hurt.
  13. What was the Met's record? It was only last year but I can't remember when they started to collapse and how big their lead was.
  14. "I am the king of Little League! There shall be a great feast, with all the finest meats and cheeses of the land! And a keg of root beer!!" I submit for consideration that Mayne was funny but once everyone else at ESPN tried to copy him or come up their own schtick it got old fast.
  15. I would like that. The backup job is Koyie's to lose next year. Isn't Ross actually younger than Kyie Hill?
  16. Lost in all of this discussion is the historical lesson, namely, that Thigpen was never any good after breaking the record because they basically used him up that season.
  17. Dusty Baker might not be bad as an AL Manager. He wouldn't have to overthink the game. No more double switches for no reason. He could get guys ABs in the DH spot. The problem is that he needs a veteran club and most teams looking for a manager are rebuilding and don't want him. I could see Baker taking over the Orioles in a couple years if Angelos decided to spend some money again and bring in the likes of Texiera and some pitchers.
  18. My Mom has 100-101 wins in the pool. She was asking me last week if the Cubs could make it. I said they probably couldn't because they might want to rest some players down the stretch if they have a lead. Now I wonder if 100 wins is a goal they are trying to reach.
  19. So I decide to regrip my clubs. I cut the grips off my clubs and went to Dick's sporting goods to but some replacements. I see a sign there that says they'll re grip clubs for $2.99 plus the price of the grips! Best 3 bucks ever spent. Has anyone gone to Dick's to get fitted for clubs? I'm starting to wonder if regular shafts might be better for me these days.
  20. I didn't realize he was as old as he is. And also, its weird having reached the point where I consider a prospect old if I'm younger than him. Wait until you turn 40 and they talk about guys your age as though they were father time.
  21. That's why they invented the 5 and 7 woods.
  22. CubinNY wrote: This is a great point and speaks to the crux of the matter. The crusty old sportswriters that use wins as the be all and end of of pitcher evaluation remember an era when pitchers threw a lot more complete games. During that time pitchers controlled their own destiny except for run support. Thus it's easy to see why they would associate wins with starting pitchers in an exaggerated way. The reason why people still think wins are a good measure of a pitcher's performance is that human beings are for the most part too lazy to challenge an accepted "truth". Of course the world is flat, I can see the ground and it's flat beneath my feet.
  23. Hard to imagine how that could be anyone but the Cards in that position.
  24. Cub fans lack the accumen to appreciate a good apple hurling, whereas we, as a fanbase, enjoy stick bashing.
  25. Given how close the races are it's possible and maybe even likely that the winner of the NL West won't have the luxury of setting up their rotation the way they want to. Also, the Cubs have a big advantage in that they have 4 good starters whereas the D-Backs only have 3. So that 2nd time against Webb might be on short rest in game 4.
