  1. Interesting move. Adds another reliever to the AAA shuttle which is definitely a plus since it gives more flexibility than last year, ie they can bring Caridad, Stevens, Gaub and now Gray up and down as necessary. This moves Baker into the backup 3rd base position which is a downgrade offensively but a huge upgrade defensively over Fox. This also helps clear the way for the Theriot to 2nd base move. It also allows them to keep Blanco up as a backup that can actually play SS. In so far as this is Hendry fixing a mistake, while that's true it maybe is keeping him from making another mistake by bringing in another vet reliever and paying him $3.5 mill. That takes the sting out of having to pay Miles to go away.
  2. Do you really think that Piniella isn't still obsessed with getting more LH? If anything, Ankiel fits Piniella's idea of the the LH #5 hitter that he wanted last year but didn't get. I'm not suggesting that this is a good idea but it's right up Hendry's alley.
  3. No. I'd bet 7-9 keeps him here for another year, and then 6-10 is up in the air. I guess that makes sense since 7-9 means that they beat the Packers or a disinterested Vikings team. But they have to at least fire Turner and also bring in a new defensive coordinator. If that happens I can live with another year of Lovie at the helm.
  4. So Lovie Smith gets fired at the end of the season unless they go 8-8. Does that seem realistic?
  5. It's unrealistic to expect any college football coach to be there indefinitely. The days of coaches staying with one program for 20 years are gone. The big programs have very short memories and high expectations. This is the age where Jim Tressel comes under scrutiny for only winning 1 NC.
  6. Would a loss Sunday seal Lovie Smith's fate? It ought to but I'm not so sure. The Bears are a cheap organization and they might be content to fire Turner instead and see where that gets them. You could certainly argue that a competent Offensive coordinator would have this team at 7-4 instead of 4-7. On the other hand, if they want Shannahan they might feel like they need to make a move now before he loses his mind and signs on with Buffalo.
  7. The thread title should be breaking down 2: The Wrath of Kan.
  8. I wonder what someone like Allen Iverson would say about this. I wonder how different his answer would be 10 years from now.
  9. The problem with waiting until after he makes that much money is the market dries up. I'd much rather trade Theriot too early than too late. You know you aren't going to get burned by some great playing finally putting it together. This is really the best time to trade Theriot. The Cubs are already paying Fontenot, Baker and Miles to play 2nd base. If they move Theriot to 2nd they have to either cut Miles which costs money or trade Fontenot for little or no return. I'd rather they get a useful player for Theriot which helps offset having to pay Miles to go away.
  10. Baseball is a game of one on one matchups. Any player that says the team was bad because Bradley was a jerk has no business playing professional baseball.Lots of people in this world are jerks. What are the odds against finding 25 people that all like each other. Chemistry is a biproduct of winning or losing games- at least it is in baseball.
  11. Actually, it does make a little bit of sense. While under contract, he had the ability to decide what teams he was willing to be traded to. As a player who is no longer under contract, his list of potential suitors should not be limited at all, since he could find himself out of work entirely. Beggars can't be choosers. I don't see how. He turns down a chance to play for a contender who would either non tender him or try to extend him. Either way he would have been better off accepting the trade and working out an extension.
  12. I could see where the Sox would be interested in Bradley for Jenks. From a baseball standpoint Bradley fits the OF/DH need that they clearly have. He would be a clear upgrade over Dye. If they got Bradley and he performed the way he normally does it would be a way to stick it to the Cubs. Bradley would probably be happy/ motivated to play for the Sox so he could stick it to Cubs fans. So it works on a crazy Sox agenda standpoint too. Jenks for Bradley would be a fairly even trade with the Sox getting better talent and the Cubs saving money on a guy that they could actually use or flip to some mid level team looking for a closer.
  13. So he refused a trade to the Twins but now he'll sign there as a FA? That doesn't make any sense. If every player they have linked to the Mets signed, there payroll would probably be ~ $300 million
  14. Last year, didn't they have a segment of the GM meeting where the GMs each in turn said what they were looking for this offseason? Maybe they did that this year and that led Hendry to believe that someone like Adduci would be in demand. Am I imagining this? Otherwise, Hendry has made some weird decisions in protecting players. Cedeno for instance was a head scratcher at the time.
  15. Off to a good start. Assuming we dont trade for or sign a starter, any chance that he'll be in the mix for that 5th starter job? I'm guessing they will want him to work on some breaking pitches at AAA before bring him into the rotation. Smardz has the inside track for the last spot assuming they don't bring Harden back. If Samardzija is being given a chance for the #5 spot, so should Diamond. Of course he'll get a chance but Samardzija has the inside track due to his contract status. I'm not saying its a good reason to favor him over Diamond but it will be easier to leave Diamond in the minors.
  16. with their finances in trouble the Mets might not be able to afford Fielder. Also, Fielder seems like the kind of player that could very easily get destroyed by the NY media.
  17. The Cubs could really use a guy like Fielder. They'll probably extend Lee, but with no significant bats on the horizon in the minors, no impact LH bats, and Lee turning 35 in the final year of his deal, Fielder could actually be a great fit. Although it would never happen. Exactly, there are lots of places that would make sense but won't happen. Makes me wonder if the Cubs would be one of those teams that pursues Fielder when he does hit FA.
  18. Where is the market for Fielder though? Seems like there are plenty of teams that could use him but couldn't pay what he'll want. Teams also seem to be getting very stingy with their top prospects for guys like Fielder. He'd be a good fit in Baltimore for example but I doubt they have the pitching to spare to get Fielder. The brewers, oddly enough, might be better off offering him arby and taking the picks.
  19. The Bears look like an 8-8 team right now. I see them being able to beat the Packers who actually made the Bears D-Line look good opening night. I also see them beating the Vikings B team who have nothing to play for if the Saints have already wrapped up homefield advantage. I'd like to believe that I'll watch all the NBC shows instead of the Bears game but that plan never works and I always wind up watching them even when I shouldn't.
  20. Ronny Cedeno was supposed to be the next Davey Rosello until he suddenly started hitting when he got to AAA.
  21. The reports that I've read say the Rangers want Bradley only if the Cubs pay a big portion of his contract. I know the Rangers have money issues and I understand trying to make the best deal possible, but I don't understand all of this poor-mouthing. Their payroll for 2010 is $39 million (a drop of $37 million) without including Millwood as part of a deal. Including Millwood would put their payroll at $27 million (a decrease of $49 million from 2009). Today's Tribune wonders if they would send a couple of middle-level prospects for Bradley if the Cubs pay $9 - $10 million of the $21 million owed. Isn't their owner in dire financial straits? So they are paying their entire team what the Cubs are paying Soriano, Lee and Zambrano combined and they are in financial trouble? Wow
  23. I'm not following the irony. Maybe "irony" wasn't the right word to use, but it's very unusual for somebody to play for someone they were once traded for.Unusual, coincidental maybe...but I wouldn't say ironic. Alanis Morissette begs to differ Well played.
  24. The Cubs best chance is probably SD holding out for more than anyone can/will offer for Gonzalez- similar to what happened with the Jays and Halladay. They wind up keeping him all year even though he's rumored to be traded any minute up until the deadline. Then the Cubs trade for him next off season.
