  1. Do you think he'll be able to recover the way Kobe Bryant did? Kobe was cleared of the charges but he did at least cheat on his wife. Was what Tiger did worse? He got caught more times but nobody is accusing him of rape.
  2. Isn't it mostly about the fact that he's done well playing at high levels for his age? That's certainly part of it but but lots of players perform well early but are never able to build on that success. Dopirak for example was seen as a guy that may have trouble adjusting as he climbed the ladder and that turned out to be true. With Castro he has skills that could still be developed.
  3. He probably has the talent to, but I think they want to delay his FA years a bit and wait until May (or whenever it is) so he achieves super 2 status. He has to spend 10 days in the minors in order to push back FA. I think he will follow a path similar to what the Cubs did with Prior, making stops at High A, AA and then a few appearances at AAA. I could see them keeping him in the minors in order to limit his innings and calling him up after they've "sold high" on Marquis or Wang at the trade deadline.
  4. "Get a hit Crash" "Shut up"
  5. Why the Reds? No offense but, why the hell can't they align for the Cubs? As a Cub fan do you really need to ask this question?
  6. Sounds like Angelo wants someone that will go along with what he wants now that he is in "save my job at all costs" mode.
  7. Perhaps this is the year that the stars align for the Reds who finally get some pitching to support their good young hitters. Of course people have been saying that for about 7 years now.
  8. The arena league is like watching 2 basketball teams that play full court press. Like Loyola Marymount in the Hank Gaithers days vs UNLV. It just becomes silly after a while because there's so much scoring. Maybe a better comparison is playing football at recess, with a nerf and everyone goes out for a pass and one defender is counting out the rush 1 thousand, 2 thousand.

    Pro Bowl

The pro bowl helped distract the media away from a superflous week of Super Bowl coverage. So instead of being really really tired of hearing about Freney's ankle I'm merely tired of hearing about it. TV ratings were better and attendance at the game was better. The pre superbowl pro bowl was a big success.
  10. It's not inconceivable, but it's unlikely. We won't know whether Soriano or Soto are as bad as last year until at least midseason, so meanwhile you have to go with Theriot. We should know a lot sooner than that. I'll conceed the point that keeping Theriot around until say June is safer than trading him now. However, that means probably paying him at least $3 million/ 3.4 after he wins his arby case. Last year at Iowa Blanco put up a .304/.353/.474 line in 258 PAs. That's not a full season but it's a large enough sample to be worth noting. 2010 will be his age 26 season. He is young enough to perhaps perform better than his career .650 ops. Theriot is 30. His line of .288/ .343/ .369 last year wasn't exactly legendary. He doubled his career total number of HRs and still only managed to slug .369. Is Theriot a better hitter than Blanco this year? Probably. However, he is not that much better. Not so much better that he'll be worth what they'll have to pay him. Then there's the matter of what to do if Castro is ready. Will Theriot graciously help Castro adjust or will he go all Larry Bowa and be a jackass?
  11. Is it inconceivable for Blanco to put up a .250/.325/.400 line? That would be about the same as Theriot with much better defense. A lot of people expect better results from Soriano and Soto. If that's the case then will the dropoff from Theriot to Blanco offensively really be that big of a deal? Conversely, if Soriano and Soto are as bad as they were last year, does it really matter who plays SS for an 80 win team?
  12. I could have sworn that Pete Townsend was dead. Must have been thinking of John Entwistle. Janet Jackson pretty much ruiined any chance of any non country music star under 50 performing at the superbowl ever again.
  13. His first pro seasons were at 2B, then SS/3B. I think the reasoning is weak here. His switch from a MI to a corner guy probably led to him beefing up, which led to his power. He wasn't going to be a little power hitting 2B. If he had given up MI earlier he may have gotten more ABs and had better stats. Or he may have never made the majors at all.
  14. Byfuglien is the Larry Biittner of the Blackhawks.
  15. If you've never been to Mardi Gras, go. Though it's only fair to warn you that everything you do the rest of the year will be a let down in comparison.
  16. The Colts were 8 point favorites iirc. The only people that were picking the Bears were people that were doing so they could sound smart after a possible upset. It seemed like the Colts had the ball the entire second half and converted every 3rd down.
  17. I have to admit that for a beating of a dead horse this was a pretty good one.
  18. In fact, a real starter could potentially make another RH reliever available- Smardz or perhaps Wells.
  19. There's nothing in that article that says the Cubs want Marshall in the rotation. It says Marshall likes starting better- which we already knew. Marshall also says he likes relieving which says that he thinks he'll end up working out of the pen. The rotation probably comes down to Gorzelany 4 and Smardz 5 unless he's really terrible in ST or Silva is shockingly good- by which by mean not horrible.
  20. So do the Vikings sign Donovan McNabb after he gets cut by the Eagles to replace Favre?
  21. The OF will be Reimold, Jones, Markakis. IF will be Tejada at 3B, Izturis at SS, Roberts at 2B, and Atkins at 1B with Wieters catching and Luke Scott getting the majority of starts at DH. That leaves Wigginton to be the main infield backup and Pie as the main OF backup. People around here are pretty meh about Tejada coming back. Few were sorry to see him go but on a one year deal it buys some time for that 3rd base prospect they got for their former closer whose name escapes me.
  22. The O's like him as a useful fill in for the oft injured Adam Jones. Any trade for Pie would therefore be prohibitively expensive unless it was part of a larger deal like Wells, Colvin, Marshall and Cashner for Markakis and Pie.
  23. It's always been a joke. The chances of me actually watching it during the off week as opposed to the week after the superbowl are much much higher. In other words, if I flip past it I may watch for a few minutes.
  24. I hope so as well, unfortunately hope is all we got. It's tough enough to a get a good performing prospect to translate into good performance in the majors, but it's really tough to turn an underperformer into a good one, and I don't like the idea of hoping for that to be a key for your season. Why would hoping for Samardzija to be a good 5th starter be "a key" for the Cubs season? I think you misread his post. He was saying he hoped Samardjiza would have a good year, not that he had to have a good year. I don't think he misread it at all. With Lilly out for the first month of the season at least the Cubs are going to need the back end of their rotation to be good. I don't feel confident that Wells will continue to pitch as well as he did last year. Gorzelanny is a capable #5 starter but he will probably be the #4 starter. The other options for the #5 slot haven't had any real MLB success except for Silva. If Silva wins the #5 spot the Cubs are likely in very big trouble. So yes, the Cubs do need Smardz to pitch well or they could find themselves in a deep hole at the end of April.
