Exactly. By then Cedeno would have been ready, IMO. Or, if not, then I'm sure the SS crop next year would be better. There is NO NEED to throw a buttload of money at Furcal when we have at least 2 other options.

This is what you get for putting all your eggs in one basket. I'd still rather see Nomar here than Furcal. Something tells me we are really going to regret letting Nomar walk. Of course, if Furcal wants that insane contract, we may well see Nomar back here. Without the sweetheart, low base/high incentive deal he probably would have signed, of course.

Earlier in the game, the ump blew (and I mean really blew) a call at home plate. He called the Cubs runner out when he was clearly safe. I don't think he was doing that great of a job on balls and strikes either. Anyway, Mongo gets up to sing, and before the music starts says something like "Don't worry, I'm gonna have a talk with that home plate umpire after the game!" Hernandez did the "you're out of the game" gesture, and Mongo was ejected from the stadium. But damn, was it funny.

I'd be happy with either Giles or Matsui, honestly. Both are good players who would really help this team.

Pierre is a life time 267/363 in SB for 74%. I could care less what a leadoff man's SLG is. I'd value the 200 hits/yr and OBP a lot more than his .SLG. Pierre's K/BB ratio is 211/226. While thats not HOF worthy, his speed and his ability to make contact really helps him. Anytime he makes contact on the ground he can be a threat. Pierre would be a tremendous improvemtn over anything the Cubs have had at the top of the order recently. Bravo! He's not the best option out there, but he's a heck of a lot better than any option we currently have. Yes, maybe his CS% isn't where it should be, but his speed can be beneficial in legging out a ground ball, or taking the extra base. I don't think we should pass on him because he gets thrown out a few more times per year trying to steal second base than he should. I'll take 200 hits a year at the top of the order.

What a first game. I don't remember much of my first game, except for Andre Dawson singled and they won. I think they played the Pirates? I'm pretty sure it was 1992. But they should show that game on ESPN Classic from time to time. Definately one of the best regular-season games I've ever seen. That was just nuts. I also remember that day because my dad came home about the 4th inning or so because he lost his job. But he has a good one now, so it's all cool.

Yeah, that was the only part of the interview that irritated me. I don't think the questions were the right ones, though. I would have asked about: -Why not Brian Giles? -Aramis' offseason stretching program -Dotel? -Rule 5 draft guys; why not trade some? -Why not let Neifi go test the market and save money? -OBP in the 1-2 spots. Agreed. Those questions would have been excellent to ask. Well I know Hendry did mention that Stat-wise the lead-off position was not where it should be. Hendry isn't going to come out and say that Dusty's top of the lineup was terrible. It's just not his M.O. He mentioned that RF was something they are going to be looking at as well as more pitching depth. I didn't expect him to come and tell Silvy and Carmen exactly who he is looking at. I wasn't knocking Hendry's answers; I was being critical of the questions that were asked. I didn't think they were the best questions to ask Hendry. He could have answered however he wanted, but if the interviewers at least bother to ask to right questions, that's all I could hope for. I wasn't arguing against you. I totally agree that the questions were fairly soft. I think a lot of times they have GMs on just to say they could get them on and talk to them and then they leave it up to Bruce Levine to ask the hard questions...although I am not sure he does either. The interesting question I heard was about Walker and why we haven't heard about him much. Hendry denied that Walker wasn't in the plans for the future and in a nutshell discredited the rumors that if they sign Furcal 2nd base would come down to just Cedeno and Perez. I hope he's not just saying that just to be saying that. Todd Walker should be our starting 2nd baseman next year, and he should be batting 2nd behind Furcal. At least I'd hope that would be the case. But....but....but his DEFENSE is bad. No matter he can hit .300, he may cost us 5 runs a year with his glove! We CANT have that!
