  1. I'm not sure what was more pathetic, the reference or the fact that I got it ...
  2. Nothing wrong with that; most teams have some veteran filler at AAA. There are legitimate reasons for questioning Hendry, but I don't think signing Augie is one of them. Let me rephrase that: why can't we restrict candidates for "veteran filler" to legitimate ballplayers? This guy has no business being a heartbeat away from Wrigley Field.
  3. The offseason from hell gets EVEN WORSE. Hendry has got to go. Good God. You want Hendry fired because he signed a guy to play SS in the minor leagues? It's just the latest in a long line of goofball moves, many of which result in crappy players calling Wrigley Field home. Why can't we restrict Spring Training invites to people with talent?

  5. The Cubs have a commanding lead when it comes to games televised nationally on WGN, and, as ManEatingTarp said, the benefits of being on WGN have been blunted by near-universal access to all teams. The Sox really needed to have been on there 30 years ago if they were to set up any kind of lasting connect to distant lands. In any case, I don't think the Sox product as currently set up is the kind of thing that would reach out to faraway fans. The stars aren't all that "starry," and the broadcasts themselves are pretty freaking annoying.
  6. I must say I agree with your assessment. Nice work. I would, however, add a fourth and fifth group - the regional crowd and the out-of-town diehards. IMHO, the Cubs' local base extends deep into Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska, much like Cincinnati's (less potent but historically strong) ties into Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. I think there are many people in those areas whose ties to the club are just as strong as those seen in Chicago proper. I'd use the Cubs' radio network map as a loose definition of the "regional" crowd. There are also many Cub diehards throughout the country who travel to Wrigley and road parks with the express purpose of seeing the Cubs. These people are not random tourists or conventioneers, they're deadly serious Cub fans.
  7. Those SOBs need to realize that it's a lost cause. The Sox may establish a winning tradition, they may build a bigger season ticket base, they may sell a ton of fugly hats - but they'll never generate a nationwide fan base on the level of that enjoyed by the Cubs. "Cubdom" is the result of a confluence of factors - a beautiful ballpark, storied history, beloved announcers, charasmatic ballplayers, landmark postseasons and national reach - that never happened before, and may never be seen again. There is very little interest in the Sox outside of Chicagoland, a fact that has allowed me to happily pretend that the WS never happened. The national media hasn't jumped on the South Side bandwagon because there are about 500 other sports entities to talk about which garner more interest. All this talk of "changing the baseball culture" is a bunch of bull. The Sox should concentrate on winning and making their fans happy, but as is usual, the bastards just can't get over the Cubs.
  8. I just remember when we gave Dusty Baker the manager's job and I thought, "Nothing wrong with that." Then, I endured three years of pure hell and I discovered what was wrong with it.
  9. The notion that Dusty will do the "right thing" is dubious at best. Grissom will be the latest in a long line of worthless players used by Baker to destroy this team.
  10. I don't think anyone who played in Montreal could be considered overrated. The man got almost no publicity while toiling as an Expo. I disagree, while there he placed 2nd in the MVP vote twice. Sure, but the general public didn't see a lot of him. Imagine the attention he'd have garnered with those seasons in New York, or even somewhere like Cincinnati. Montreal was a black hole. Actually Montreal drew more fans than Cincinnati in the 80's: http://www.ballparksofbaseball.com/1980-89attendance.htm Hah, this is actually my "baseball failed Montreal not the other way around" rant. I don't think we're debating the same point ... I don't doubt that Dawson and the Expos were well received in Montreal in those days, but he'd have been more famous/overrated in this country had he played the game of his youth on a team besides the two Canadian entries. I think Dawson, Raines and Cromartie would have been superstars of the highest order had they played together anywhere else.

  13. How can you find out what the different numbers mean? My truck is a Mercury, but the Vin starts with a "4".... 4 is US as well. 2 is Canad, 3 is Mexico,J is japan, K is Korea, Germany is W, that is all I remember. The 10th number should tell you what year it was made 88 is J, 89 is K, and so on (skip O, Q, U, and Z, 2001 starts at 1). #s 4-8 tell the body style, engine type, model, etc 2nd digit is manufacturer. I think Mercury is M 11th number tells you what plant iit was assembled at. I think all that is right. It has been a few years since I have had use any of that info. (I used to sell GM and Honda parts in the service dept. of a dealership) If your truck is real old, I don't think any of that applies Yeah, pre-1981 cars use a different, manufacturer-specific system. Lead numbers 4 and 5 are used in America by Ford Motor.
  14. There are Japanese and European nightmares sold every day; no company makes perfect cars. The quality surveys (reality) don't match your perception. Nightmare tales like yours can be countered with tales of faithful, dependable service. So you don't think America makes any "nice" cars?
  15. All my cars are from GM, and their VINs lead with "1," indicating that they were made right here. Those two conditions must be met before I buy, and I'm proud to say so. I'll be picking up another one tomorrow. :D
  16. Buster "The Yanks' Damon offer is a charade" Olney will discuss this matter on ESPNEWS at 3:40 ET.
  17. Interesting note from the Muskat.
  18. That's an indication that Prior isn't nearly as "untouchable" as many here think. I like Prior, but to me Z is the only untouchable on the squad.
  19. What else is there? To be a Cub fan is to eat, sleep and breathe the darkness. BTW, I like the trade. Dusty's just going to ruin Prior's arm anyway. If you love something, set it free, eh? Something like that.

  21. That's a bit of an overstatement; might have been sarcasm. Whose decision was it to put two bums at the top of the depth chart at second base? Would you want to play for a stooge manager with ideas like that, who treats Neifi — the very definition of mediocrity — like some kind of elite player? It's clear to me that Baker has his favorites, and dudes like Prior just aren't in the club.
  22. The Neifi signing has crushed the hearts of the fanbase; why would it be any different for the players? If I were Prior I wouldn't want to play with Perez, or for Baker. Those two are ruining everything.
