  1. That's a good question. In fact, I had my Jerry Hairston story written a week ago and planned to use it on the off-day in the schedule. But then Mr. Prior got hurt, and out went that idea. I picked yesterday as the day to run it. I haven't seen the other papers yet, so I don't know what they've written. Some days, the story line is obvious. Derrek Lee played in his first game since the WBC. So it was natural for all of the reporters (radio, Web site, newspapers) to want to to talk to him. In fact, he was waiting for us. If it's Derrek Lee, it's a big story, and everybody is going to "lead" with it. For the night games, we have limited access. We talked to Dusty before the other night's game, and the subject of Grissom came up. It was my "lead" note because of the 25-man roster issue and Dusty's history of preferring veterans. We have access to just about anybody who is there on most days. The Trib ran a Dempster story the other day. I ran a Dempster story last month. On some days, the story of the day jumps out at you. On other days, you pretty much decide on your own. Thank you for your time. I know you are busy and I really appreciate that you are willing to take the time to visit with us.
  2. I dunno man, Sammy with the Rangers looked like around 170. He was pretty scrawny. He was also like 20 years old too. There will always be suspicion about Sammy. I don't want to believe he used. But the suspcion is there.
  3. Sorry, too late. You took a stance by posting in this thread. Your stance appears to be that we shouldn't criticize Clines becuase we don't know the whole story. Thanks for the words of caution.
  4. Nothing to add, except that I tottally agree, especially with point #2.
  5. Hey Bruce, If you have a second or two. I noticed that all three papers (Daily Herald, Trib, Sun Times) print the exact same themed story on most days. For example, today it is Jerry Hairston and Derek Lee. Yesterday it was Grissom. Why is that the case? Do you guys only get access to a few players each day? Just curious, keep up the good work, and enjoy the warmth and sunshine, CubinNY
  6. My prediction is that the Cubs are in the 675-687 range in runs scored this year. That means the pitching will have to be low 600s for any shot at the playoffs.
  7. Not even in your wildest dreams Did you even bother to look up the numbers before posting this? The Cubs outproduced the Sox and Astros in 2005 in many offensive categories, including: BA, OBP, SLG, OPS, and TB The Sox hit 6 more HR, while the Astros hit 33 less. The Cubs have upgraded production in LF, SS, and CF, while maintaining status quo everywhere else. What's the problem? 2005 Runs scored CWS 741 HOU 693 (but they only gave up 609 runs) ChC 703 (but they gave up 714 runs) Even so we are talking about this year's team not last year's, no? The Cubs might have an upgrade in Cedeno, Pierre is an upgrade but that would be next to impossible not acheive and we will see what Murton is all about. Lee and Barrett cannot regress and Aramis has to say healthy. And they still will not score as many runs as last year.
  8. Not even in your wildest dreams
  9. Sub in Jones for Marby and Pierre for Pagen and put Piere at the top and Hairston at the bottom and I think you have a starting line up and batting order for about 50 to 60 games this year. More if Walker is traded.
  10. The Cubs have been a very medicore team for four years. Don't let the 88 win division championship season fool you. If they are medicore again this year it is time to clean house
  11. I hope it is not Calapari as I will be working at the U of Memphis and need a good sports program to attract good students, unfortunately. I do think it will be someone with ties to IU, though.
  12. I guess no deal could be worked out. Is he any good?
  13. From Sullivan —Marquis Grissom's spring hasn't been strong enough for him to automatically gain a spot on the Opening Day roster, but his résumé is long enough for the Cubs to give him the benefit of the doubt. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060322cubsbits,1,2578044.story?coll=cs-home-headlines
  14. If anyone is going to the game they better plan on at least a three hour line and pass through the medal detectors. Two years ago I missed the first quarter of the Army/Navy game waiting to pass through. The worst part was all the drunken soliders and sailors pissing all over the place while waiting to get in.
  15. Well if he continues to play LF, he'll save us by not allowing Hendry to trade for him. Murton and Pie for Soriano. What about a Mutton Pie for Soriano? It is a very, very bad idea. Bad in terms of the Mike Dukakis presidential campaign, bad.
  16. I think it is great that the President is throwing out the first pitch. It is a great natiional tradition.
  17. No I don't love that, but I do love the baseball cliches though. The Sox had a great season last year. But last year has no bearing on this year. Thome will be hard pressed to put up Big Frank's numbers and Mackowiak? Is he good? Guillien will self-destruct sooner or later and the pitching will not hold up.
  18. Sorry. I am not trying to be a smart alec. I was judging your post by what you put in it. You never said MLB people think otherwise. You printed a Rosenthal qoute without commenting yourself. Do you think Pie is a superstar in the making? I think Pie is a good prospect who needs to show better performance before we heap praise on him. I'm not the toolsy sort of guy. Pie looks good in a baseball uniform, but until he can develop some plate discipline or hit like Vlade I think it is a little premature to put that kind of a tag on the kid. He is young and his game needs lots of work. BA ranked him 27 this year. We will see what he can do.
  19. Cause and effect may be impossible to prove, but... in 2003, your leaders in Pitcher Abuse Points (BP's metric on high pitch counts): 1) Javier Vasquez, 2) Kerry Wood, age 26 3) Livan Hernandez 4) Mark Prior, age 23 Who in the entire league threw the highest average number of pitches per game in 2003? 1) Mark Prior [113.4] 2) Kerry Wood [110.7] And Vasquez suffered through two seasons well below his career-norm performance level, as well. Only a pitching freak like Livan Hernandez can take that kind of workload without suffering from drops in performance or injuries afterwards. I would really be interested to see how these numbers project in past years. I am much too lazy to do it myself though.
  20. So according to the projections the Cubs have less than a 50 % chance of making the playoffs (@45%)? That sounds about right to me. Call me crazy, but I think the Sox finish a distant 3rd in their division. Last year everything broke right for them and they still had to hold off the Indians at the end of the season. They are not that good.
  21. Really? From Ken Rosenthal on FoxSports.com: A rival general manager says of Cubs center-field prospect Felix Pie: "He's going to be a superstar. He's really fun to watch. He's just got electric tools. He can fly. He's got power. He plays the heck out of center field. He just needs some experience." So, becuase Ken Rosenthal prints an annonymous qoute that makes Pie a superstar in the making? I don't see where I said he was a superstar in the making. I was simply pointing to a quote from an NL GM that suggests that Pie is more than just a "big fish in a small pond." Really? I thought you were qouting an article in which Rosenthall reports that a NL GM said that Pie is "going to be a superstar". Sorry for the misunderstanding.
  22. Pie scares me. I think this season we will see just how good a prospect he is. Right now he has had about 1/2 of a good season above A ball. He was terrible this winter. They have a saying where Pie is from, "you don't walk off the island". I hope he doesn't listen.
  23. Nope. No interest in Clement at that price. Me either. Been there done that. Besides the Cubs have better internal options right now.
  24. That last line is not too far from the truth. I went to a Giants/Marlins game in 2002 and saw Bonds hit a broken bat home run down the right filed line. It was the most amazing thing of ever seen in person at a baseball game. Unfortunately this is closely followed by seeing and hearing the ball careen off Mark Prior's elbow last year in Wrigley.
