  1. I hope it is not Calapari as I will be working at the U of Memphis and need a good sports program to attract good students, unfortunately. I do think it will be someone with ties to IU, though.
  2. I guess no deal could be worked out. Is he any good?
  3. From Sullivan —Marquis Grissom's spring hasn't been strong enough for him to automatically gain a spot on the Opening Day roster, but his résumé is long enough for the Cubs to give him the benefit of the doubt. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060322cubsbits,1,2578044.story?coll=cs-home-headlines
  4. If anyone is going to the game they better plan on at least a three hour line and pass through the medal detectors. Two years ago I missed the first quarter of the Army/Navy game waiting to pass through. The worst part was all the drunken soliders and sailors pissing all over the place while waiting to get in.
  5. Well if he continues to play LF, he'll save us by not allowing Hendry to trade for him. Murton and Pie for Soriano. What about a Mutton Pie for Soriano? It is a very, very bad idea. Bad in terms of the Mike Dukakis presidential campaign, bad.
  6. I think it is great that the President is throwing out the first pitch. It is a great natiional tradition.
  7. No I don't love that, but I do love the baseball cliches though. The Sox had a great season last year. But last year has no bearing on this year. Thome will be hard pressed to put up Big Frank's numbers and Mackowiak? Is he good? Guillien will self-destruct sooner or later and the pitching will not hold up.
  8. Sorry. I am not trying to be a smart alec. I was judging your post by what you put in it. You never said MLB people think otherwise. You printed a Rosenthal qoute without commenting yourself. Do you think Pie is a superstar in the making? I think Pie is a good prospect who needs to show better performance before we heap praise on him. I'm not the toolsy sort of guy. Pie looks good in a baseball uniform, but until he can develop some plate discipline or hit like Vlade I think it is a little premature to put that kind of a tag on the kid. He is young and his game needs lots of work. BA ranked him 27 this year. We will see what he can do.
  9. Cause and effect may be impossible to prove, but... in 2003, your leaders in Pitcher Abuse Points (BP's metric on high pitch counts): 1) Javier Vasquez, 2) Kerry Wood, age 26 3) Livan Hernandez 4) Mark Prior, age 23 Who in the entire league threw the highest average number of pitches per game in 2003? 1) Mark Prior [113.4] 2) Kerry Wood [110.7] And Vasquez suffered through two seasons well below his career-norm performance level, as well. Only a pitching freak like Livan Hernandez can take that kind of workload without suffering from drops in performance or injuries afterwards. I would really be interested to see how these numbers project in past years. I am much too lazy to do it myself though.
  10. So according to the projections the Cubs have less than a 50 % chance of making the playoffs (@45%)? That sounds about right to me. Call me crazy, but I think the Sox finish a distant 3rd in their division. Last year everything broke right for them and they still had to hold off the Indians at the end of the season. They are not that good.
  11. Really? From Ken Rosenthal on FoxSports.com: A rival general manager says of Cubs center-field prospect Felix Pie: "He's going to be a superstar. He's really fun to watch. He's just got electric tools. He can fly. He's got power. He plays the heck out of center field. He just needs some experience." So, becuase Ken Rosenthal prints an annonymous qoute that makes Pie a superstar in the making? I don't see where I said he was a superstar in the making. I was simply pointing to a quote from an NL GM that suggests that Pie is more than just a "big fish in a small pond." Really? I thought you were qouting an article in which Rosenthall reports that a NL GM said that Pie is "going to be a superstar". Sorry for the misunderstanding.
  12. Pie scares me. I think this season we will see just how good a prospect he is. Right now he has had about 1/2 of a good season above A ball. He was terrible this winter. They have a saying where Pie is from, "you don't walk off the island". I hope he doesn't listen.
  13. Nope. No interest in Clement at that price. Me either. Been there done that. Besides the Cubs have better internal options right now.
  14. That last line is not too far from the truth. I went to a Giants/Marlins game in 2002 and saw Bonds hit a broken bat home run down the right filed line. It was the most amazing thing of ever seen in person at a baseball game. Unfortunately this is closely followed by seeing and hearing the ball careen off Mark Prior's elbow last year in Wrigley.
  15. My prediction is that Dusty doesn't make it out of this season as a Cubs manager and this thread get locked before 10 am EST. Dusty bashers of the world unite!
  16. If I'm making 17 million this year I'd hire the batboy to throw the balls between innings.
  17. If the time comes to be sellers I really hope they have a fire sale and get back some good ready-to-contribute players for those guys. The new Cubs manager, Larry Derkier, will know how to build a team and manage a game.
  18. I don't think anyone has said anything like that, except for the people who have said that others are implying that. I don't really have a problem with the quote per se. What I have a problem with is Dusty's track record of overlooking poor play by vetren players and keying on poor play by rookies or non-vetran players. To me, and I could be wrong in this instance, this is a case in point. As I said in my first post in this thread, only time will tell what Dusty will do. Why is it that a rookie with a good track record in the minors has to win a job in ST but a vetran with a crappy track record doesn't lose a job in ST. I am not talking about starting or being a back up here but an overall thing. Last year Hollandsworth was handed the job in LF and DuBios had to play his way into the position. How much pressure was put on DuBios? He couldn't have an 0-3 without looking over his shoulder.
  19. The Cubs have been trying to run Walker off the entire off-season. I think his latest comments were the last straw. What I cannot understand is why a team wouldn't want Walker. Check that, given the nature of MLB I can understand it. A bad reputation is hard to shake. Walker has had one since Tom Kelly publically called him out early in his career in Minnesota.
  20. You did say: "I don't have much problem with Alph's decision here either. " I think Bowden was foolish for making the trade (even if Soriano was to move), but Soriano is still a dirtbag of a player for pulling this crap. If Soriano was drafted by Washington, and refused to sign, that's one thing. But when you sign that contract that starts guaranteeing you money, you relinquish the right to choose when and where you play until you hit free agency. I see your point. I guess Alph should have pulled a Sheffield and said something to the effect, "If I'm traded and they try to move me to the outfiled, I won't be happy and if I'm not happy I might not play very well." I think Alph's reluctance to move to the outfiled is part of the reason why the Yankees traded him in the first place.
  21. And if Jacque Jones comes out in the newspapers tomorrow that he only wants to play CF and refuses to play RF, do you still think that a player should have that kind of authority to make on field baseball decisions? Or are you basing your position on the fact that Soriano has expressed his desire to stay at 2nd base or should all teams discuss what position players want to or would be willing to play before trades are made? It seems to me that an organization would want a guy to be happy in his position with the team. If I'm a GM and I want to move a guy to a new position I'd ask him. If he says no, I try to trade him for as much as I can get. If the guy is not on my team but another team has agreed to trade him I talk with the guy. If he is reluctant I don't make the trade. What useful purpose could there be for a guy to be on a team and not be happy with the postion he is plyaing? I don't belive in the chemistry argument at all, but I want guys who want to play for me. I'm not saying Alph is right and Bowden is wrong. If Jones said he wanted to play CF and not RF I'd be pretty happy b/c I would hope Hendry would get rid of him. :D
  22. Then he's got to live with the consequences. The CBA dictates that players after signing their first contract and before free agency don't have a say in where they play or what position they play. And so does Bowden. The whole situation is a disaster.
  23. And that personally makes me feel very happy and confident that Neifi is a backup. I disagree with Mr. Miles on the part I bolded. I think there is a lot of hypocrisy in Baker's comments. And just becuase it is that way all around baseball doesn't make it right. Baseball is the biggest old boys network in sports. How many retread managers get second, third, and fouth chances to prove they are not good? Why do clubs hang on to proven veterans just becuase they have been there before? Look at the rosters in AAA. They are full of guys who don't deserve a spot but are there b/c of some belief system that says b/c a guy has had a medicore career he should be given a spot. When Baker was coming up with the Dodgers they were legendary for doing this sort of thing. Heck the rule 5 draft was practically put in place b/c they would hold guys in AAA for an eternity. I agree that Neifi is the back up. However, when Walker is traded (and he will be most likely) Neifi will get more ABs than would otherwise be the case. Should Cedeno go into a slump who will be replacing him? Hairston hasn't played a full season in his entire career. Should he go down Neifi will be playing. Now, I guess I don't have a problem with that so much as where he will bat in the line up.
  24. I think there has to be some sort of mutual agreement. For his part Alph didn't have any say in what team he was traded to. That is all well and good, but if I were him I'd want a say in what position I'd want to play. I guess it all comes down to one's personal philosohy in these matters. I have a lot of friends who were pissed at Eli Manning refusing to play for San Deigo. I had no problem with it. I don't have much problem with Alph's decision here either. But what a stupid decision by the Nats to trade for a guy and then try to move him to another position without first finding out if he wants to or can play that position.
