  1. My prediction is that Dusty doesn't make it out of this season as a Cubs manager and this thread get locked before 10 am EST. Dusty bashers of the world unite!
  2. If I'm making 17 million this year I'd hire the batboy to throw the balls between innings.
  3. If the time comes to be sellers I really hope they have a fire sale and get back some good ready-to-contribute players for those guys. The new Cubs manager, Larry Derkier, will know how to build a team and manage a game.
  4. I don't think anyone has said anything like that, except for the people who have said that others are implying that. I don't really have a problem with the quote per se. What I have a problem with is Dusty's track record of overlooking poor play by vetren players and keying on poor play by rookies or non-vetran players. To me, and I could be wrong in this instance, this is a case in point. As I said in my first post in this thread, only time will tell what Dusty will do. Why is it that a rookie with a good track record in the minors has to win a job in ST but a vetran with a crappy track record doesn't lose a job in ST. I am not talking about starting or being a back up here but an overall thing. Last year Hollandsworth was handed the job in LF and DuBios had to play his way into the position. How much pressure was put on DuBios? He couldn't have an 0-3 without looking over his shoulder.
  5. The Cubs have been trying to run Walker off the entire off-season. I think his latest comments were the last straw. What I cannot understand is why a team wouldn't want Walker. Check that, given the nature of MLB I can understand it. A bad reputation is hard to shake. Walker has had one since Tom Kelly publically called him out early in his career in Minnesota.
  6. You did say: "I don't have much problem with Alph's decision here either. " I think Bowden was foolish for making the trade (even if Soriano was to move), but Soriano is still a dirtbag of a player for pulling this crap. If Soriano was drafted by Washington, and refused to sign, that's one thing. But when you sign that contract that starts guaranteeing you money, you relinquish the right to choose when and where you play until you hit free agency. I see your point. I guess Alph should have pulled a Sheffield and said something to the effect, "If I'm traded and they try to move me to the outfiled, I won't be happy and if I'm not happy I might not play very well." I think Alph's reluctance to move to the outfiled is part of the reason why the Yankees traded him in the first place.
  7. And if Jacque Jones comes out in the newspapers tomorrow that he only wants to play CF and refuses to play RF, do you still think that a player should have that kind of authority to make on field baseball decisions? Or are you basing your position on the fact that Soriano has expressed his desire to stay at 2nd base or should all teams discuss what position players want to or would be willing to play before trades are made? It seems to me that an organization would want a guy to be happy in his position with the team. If I'm a GM and I want to move a guy to a new position I'd ask him. If he says no, I try to trade him for as much as I can get. If the guy is not on my team but another team has agreed to trade him I talk with the guy. If he is reluctant I don't make the trade. What useful purpose could there be for a guy to be on a team and not be happy with the postion he is plyaing? I don't belive in the chemistry argument at all, but I want guys who want to play for me. I'm not saying Alph is right and Bowden is wrong. If Jones said he wanted to play CF and not RF I'd be pretty happy b/c I would hope Hendry would get rid of him. :D
  8. Then he's got to live with the consequences. The CBA dictates that players after signing their first contract and before free agency don't have a say in where they play or what position they play. And so does Bowden. The whole situation is a disaster.
  9. And that personally makes me feel very happy and confident that Neifi is a backup. I disagree with Mr. Miles on the part I bolded. I think there is a lot of hypocrisy in Baker's comments. And just becuase it is that way all around baseball doesn't make it right. Baseball is the biggest old boys network in sports. How many retread managers get second, third, and fouth chances to prove they are not good? Why do clubs hang on to proven veterans just becuase they have been there before? Look at the rosters in AAA. They are full of guys who don't deserve a spot but are there b/c of some belief system that says b/c a guy has had a medicore career he should be given a spot. When Baker was coming up with the Dodgers they were legendary for doing this sort of thing. Heck the rule 5 draft was practically put in place b/c they would hold guys in AAA for an eternity. I agree that Neifi is the back up. However, when Walker is traded (and he will be most likely) Neifi will get more ABs than would otherwise be the case. Should Cedeno go into a slump who will be replacing him? Hairston hasn't played a full season in his entire career. Should he go down Neifi will be playing. Now, I guess I don't have a problem with that so much as where he will bat in the line up.
  10. I think there has to be some sort of mutual agreement. For his part Alph didn't have any say in what team he was traded to. That is all well and good, but if I were him I'd want a say in what position I'd want to play. I guess it all comes down to one's personal philosohy in these matters. I have a lot of friends who were pissed at Eli Manning refusing to play for San Deigo. I had no problem with it. I don't have much problem with Alph's decision here either. But what a stupid decision by the Nats to trade for a guy and then try to move him to another position without first finding out if he wants to or can play that position.
  11. I thought you said you didn't do that sort of thing?
  12. Present one example. Just one. See the problem is that you and some others have a problem with people criticizing the Cubs. There is nothing chicken little about it. People questioned why Prior was being held out of games. You and some others made statements to the effect that those people were being overly cirticial. What happens next, low and behold Prior comes up with a shoulder strain. But we are supposed to believe that nothing was wrong with him before that. Dusty has a track record of looking over poor play by "proven veterns" yet keys on poor play by minor leaguers. Time will tell what Dusty will do. Untill then it is better to come up with your own argument why you belive what you do rather than point out the faults of people who post here. The second post of this thread. Not even close.

  14. Thanks Bruce. Not the first time posters have ignored the whole story, and only focused on the part that fits their agenda. What adgenda is that? It is about time for this stuff to stop. Only time will tell what Dusty will do.
  15. Cedeno was the freaking rookie of the year in his league this winter. All he has done is hit since working with Vaughn Joshua. A handfull of ABs in spring training will not change the fact that Neifi isn't a good alternative. If they don't like Cedeno, fine, but find someone else to fill the position. Cedeno is pressing, that is obvious. Instead of pointing out that Dusty should say something like, "Ronny is my guy. Look, the kid hit lights out this winter and last year he was on fire in AAA. I'm not worried about Ronny. I think his main problem is he is trying a little too hard. A few ABs this spring isn't going to change the fact that this kid is a good young player." In the interest of fairness Dusty did say something about Murton and Cedeno being too serious. Well Dusty, I would be damn serious if I too were trying to break in the majors with a club managed by you.
  16. I think they will keep him. Wurtz is having a terrible spring and with the uncertainty with the starting pitching they would be foolish to trade him. However, if the right deal came along they might go for a trade.
  17. It is what all the cool people in MLB are doing this year.
  18. 2nd man as in 2nd baseman? Sounds to me like he is clearly giving the job to somebody other than Walker, most likely Hairston with a healthy dose of Neifi, but leaving a slight opening for more Walker playing time if he's around. I highly doubt the Cubs are going to start a guy they are obviously so desperate to dump. You could be right, but if Walker is on the team (and I don't he will be) I cannot see how the Cubs could keep Walker on the bench. To me it just seems so ludicrous. Neither Hairston nor Neifi are as good an everyday player as Walker. I just don't get it???
  19. I dont really think the qoute is all that cryptic. IMO he is saying, "if Walker is here he will be my 2nd man. However, I don't think Walker will be here so I am hedging my bets by saying what I am saying"
  20. Did the trade happen or is this still speculation? If it did happen, I think this is a good deal for Boston, but a pretty fair trade. However, if Pena lives up to his potential it could be a real steal for Boston. Big Poppi better teach him some plate discipline though.
  21. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/cs-060320soxborchard,1,4372875.story?coll=cs-home-headlines for lefty reliever Matt Thornton.
  22. The article can be found here. edit - He also includes this link to help explain Prior's injury. What Carrol wrote is exactly what I expect to happen. Prior will be lucky to make five starts and he will go under the knife at some time this season. Then we will get to hear about injuries and their unpredictable nature from the Cubs front office and field manager. Whoopie!
  23. I'm not sure if I am reading your post the right way, but Baker was criticized in SF for pulling his starting pitchers too soon and burning up his pen. I think that criticism coupled with the less than stellar bullpen performance has, in a way, contributed to the ills in the pitching department (i.e, overuse of both the SP and select bullpen arms). so because he pulled his starters too soon in sf our starters are overworked? i don't know if i understand what you are getting at. In a way that is exactly what I'm getting at. Baker is notoriusly thin skinned. Now I don't know know if that is THE reason, but he certainly has worked the starting pitchers. I also agree about his misuse of the pen too. It seems to me that Baker is not good at managing a pitching staff. Before Fox's arm nearly literally fell off I think he pitched three days in a row. We all know about his fetish for righty/lefty matchups. And then there is his usage patterns of Farnsworth and others while leaving some guys to rot in the pen. Overall, he is just not good at what he does.

  25. Nothing positive can come from an injury to the shoulder, you just have to hope it's nathing major at this stage. It appears to be "minor", not sure how any injury to the shoulder is really minor though. I wasn't counting on Wood for anything this year. Now I'm not counting on Prior for much ether. It helps to lower my expectations. Lowered expectations is a Cub fan's best friend.
