  1. Grant Brisbee is having a good time with this on Twitter.
  2. I doubt he's paying any attention to the media. We are getting the ride. He's at Nobu
  3. Coin flipping accuracy at nailing the bullseye is pretty good accuracy. It means you are around the target most of the time. I don't think it's realistic to expect them to get exact dollar figures correct. But honestly, I don't understand why people care what a guy makes. I want the Cubs to hit the bullseye in determining which guys to put together to win the most games. I don't care how much it costs, the individual costs, or who the players are for the most part. I want them to win. Edit: I mean it's fun to talk about in the abstract, but I'd be in favor of the Ricketts spending the most money to get the best players on a yearly basis. I don't care about value.
  4. it's too quiet not to be true is a niece piece of pretzel logic. The silent dog method of sussing this thing out.
  5. Multiple times. But he also seems to relish the challenge. The Blue Jays are a great fit for him.
  6. Bellinger makes sense if they think he's going to be better than PCA during the life of the contract. If they sign him, it makes PCA redundant and tradable. Although there are no guarantees, I think the Cubs see PCA as the better player with the added benefit of also costing less money. So, it's not really a let's get Belliner type of decision. It's a where do we have holes and how do we best fill them type of decision. I'm fine if they resign Bellinger and trade PCA, but I don't think that is what they will do.
  7. Yeah, I was looking for the “first time?” Meme.
  8. He’s value contracting them to mediocrity! Go Jed!
  9. It’s being a confidence man.
  10. Of course he’s making it all up. These people come out of the woodwork this time of year. Like mice in the fall.
  11. from Macbeth: Life's but a walking shadow; a poor player, that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
  12. And the Diamondbacks.
  13. The Cubs must see something in Mervis that makes them think he's not going to cut it, but I'd rather they give him an honest shot at least for half a season and see what is available at the trade deadline if he falls on his face.
  14. Not Cubs off-season, but JFC , Yommamoto may go to the Dodgers too. If Ohtani goes and gets $500M and Yamamoto gets close to $300M that will be something.
  15. The dirty secret is that they can sign anyone major and still be in on Ohtani.
  16. 10A is not at all ambiguous.
  17. Ohtani doesn't bother me that much because he's the driver. He's going to go where he wants to go. The thing that does bother me is if the Cubs were out early due to preference and they continue to make like they are still all in. When Counsell said he didn't talk to Ohtani, that is a clear sign they are not seriously being considered by him. I'm also not that bothered by Soto because the obvious fit is not there and the cost in terms of prospects is going to require some amount of pain. But I understand people who people can be bothered by it. I said before, I don't care how it happens, but the Cubs need a front-of-the-rotation starter, high-leverage bullpen help, and slugging preferably LH. The division is down, but the Reds are getting serious and the Cardinals and Brewers are still there. They need to fill holes.
  18. sorry, I do my best thinking in the shower and even that is subpar.
  19. This morning in the shower I was thinking about what the Cubs strategy seems to be at this point. Especially in light of what Hawkins said a few days ago, the best I can figure is that they are banking they are on the cusp of a young and talented team. I suppose I get their thinking, even if I don't have as much faith in the farm as they seem to have. I'd rather them go and get guys and then have to worry about playing time when the young guys are ready. As we've seen, it's not that hard to unload good players if you need to do that. I tend to be on the impulsive side, so in the immortal words of Veruca Salt, "I want it now". I don't think they operate that way. I'm not sure if they are trying to emulate the Dodgers/Rays or if it is a happy coincidence related to the philosophy of the owner(s) that they are not willing or able to go the distance with top free agents. If they get Ohtani, I don't think it is indicative of a change in philosophy, but at least it will show that they are serious about winning and not winning "the right way".
  20. I've been to the hotel where they had the winter meetings and it is massive with lots of different areas all connected by hallways. You kind of feel like you're outside in a forest. I imagine unless you know where to go, you'd have a hard time finding people you know. I suppose you could look for the cameras and see the MLB Network people, but the baseball people would be hard to find.
  21. If he can't throw strikes his stuff doesn't matter.
  22. lol, he got injured. What do you care how much he makes?
  23. If they have another mid market offseason they can expect that the season ticket wait list that they lost (has been one since 2003) will continue to be lost. I’m not sure they actually care being as they now mostly own Wrigleyville. it’s a philosophy and model they are trying to pull off that requires a lot to go right and has only been successful in a few places. In the meantime the money keeps rolling in by the pallet.
  24. I didn’t see the Yankees gave up pitching for Verdugo too. They’re going to have use a juggs machine for pitching in the minors.
