  1. Bears, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory for 50 years.
  2. PCA is likely starting the season in Iowa regardless who the Cubs sign
  3. If they get Bellinger and Hoskins and add Beiber and a back end RP. I will consider it a good offseason
  4. Sometimes Fields does horsefeathers like that and makes you think he can do the job.
  5. My personal opinion is that they are getting too high on their assessment of the talent in the minors. They have depth but not height. They will need to roll 7’s and there will still be holes to fill. And we know they aren’t rolling 7’s.
  6. I took a family trip from Alabama to Michigan. We are staying in a hotel and I have a really hard time sleeping away from home (my bricks to carry). In my insomniac state I read as much as I could of direct quotes from Jed and Hawkins. If you take them at their word, and I think we should, they think the Cubs are on the brink of a breakout with the prospects they have in the high minors and also think they have cracked the code on developing pitchers. They apparently hired Consell to help shepherd in the young talent. I get the sense they are content to let the market pass them by and are looking for short term fixes. Which, ok I guess, but damn that’s frustrating. The direct line from Ricketts to Hawkins is clear. There is no daylight. There will be no hot seats handed out if the Cubs finish with a worse record next year as they continue to build the team the way the Ricketts want it built.
  7. You can feel any way you want.
  8. Between Santo and Aramis 3B is a black hole. They had Bill Madlock for a couple of years but he got uppity after winning the batting title so Wrigley sent him off.
  9. It's a philosophy shared by the ownership. On a much more ominous note, Jed is a cut out for the Ricketts. Whoever is running the Cubs is going to say close to the same thing. They believe there is a right way to win. The right way just so happens to also be incredibly less expensive than the wrong way. On one level, I can understand. But on another no, it's horsefeathers asinine and ahistorical. The Cubs, when they won were a combination of young talent and free agents.
  10. Yes, I don't know what world that dude lives in
  11. i vomited
  12. Derwood, you are noting if not consistent.
  13. Yes, as much as I've been down on the Ricketts and Jed, I'm not broken up about Soto, Ohtani, or Glasnow. Soto and Glasnow because they cost prospects and are expensive. Glasnow because he's made of glass now (pun intended) and Soto because he's a rental. I think Ohtani never considered the Cubs and Jed was faking it. I don't like that. Anyway, they do need to improve. If I were Jed, I'd be hard after the two Japanese pitchers. I'd think seriously about getting Bellinger back. I'd try to work a trade with Seattle for a young pitcher. I've come around to the idea of Hoskins. I think if they want to give Mervis a shot, they make a good platoon duo or 1B/DH combo. I'd try to hang on to anyone in the top 5 on the prospect list, but I would trade PCA if it meant I was getting a top arm for the rotation. I'd fiddle around in the relief market, but I wouldn't pay Hader money. I'm much less interested in what Cleveland has to offer. I've said a couple of times, I don't have exactly specific names, but Jed needs a top arm or two, slugging, and back end of the relief squad help. I'm open to how he does it.
  14. They lied their asses off
  15. Dave Smith
  16. Dawson, Heyward, Big Jon? in the 1980’s before Dawson they made a huge investment in a pitcher from Houston and two other guys and it was a dismal failure. I think his name was Mike Scott. I remember they were on the cover of SI during spring training.
  17. A new owner might be better, but a better owner might not get through the review process by the other owners. I don't know for sure, but I'm reasonably confident that Mark Cuban's bid for the Cubs was in line with the Ricketts but he never had a chance for approval by Bud and the rest of the Montgomery Burns like owners of the other teams.
  18. I don't think it is fair to assume that Jed dislikes dumpster diving, though, just for the record. He wants to be known as the guy responsible for building a dynasty. I think the Ricketts have a philosophy for how things are supposed to be done and I think Jed shares that philosophy or he would have pulled the ripcord like Theo did. They love cheap labor and rolling in 100-dollar bills like Scrooge McDuck.
  19. Most of the old ones too
  20. I think they were very serious about their offer. The problem is the offer wasn’t serious. I’ve posted this several times, but i don’t necessarily have a problem with them setting a limit on what they are willing to do. I do have a problem with them leaving their fans to believe they were willing to go the distance. There’s no shame in saying we gave our best and Ohtani is going in a different direction.
  21. I am so here for the pitchforks. They are the 4th richest franchise that the Ricketts have made a 500% profit on while buying a majority of the real estate around the gold mine to soak their fans. Did I mention the sports book? They made enough in concert profit to pay for Ohtani. I mean, come the horsefeathers on. At some point everybody has to acknowledge the obvious.
