  1. I’m going to pour a couple fingers of Weller cask strength tonight
  2. we don't know what's in Jed's DNA, other than A, C, G, and T. But one would assume that he either agrees with the Ricketts or at least wants to keep his job. I assume that he shares their vision, but they set the agenda. I don't believe for a second all the press that the Ricketts are hands-off owners. I think Jed knows what the expectations are and largely agrees with how they are team building.
  3. The opt-outs mitigate some of the risk on the player side. I think he's going to be good. I also don't think he nor the Dodgers expect him to end with them on this contract.
  4. the front office is implementing the owners' plan. They ain't goin' nowhere.
  5. Madrigal and Wisdom are still on the team.
  6. God this is a depressing post.
  7. there is no rational basis on which to have a discussion with irrational people. You point out a fact and they disregard the fact and move the peanut from one shell to the next.
  8. like hitting my head against a brick wall. I'm done.
  9. They do. They all do. Look at the Rays. The only difference between the Rays and the Pirates is who is running the organization. Money is an advantage, but it's not what separates the winners from the losers. Your proposed solution only limits how much money the actual players are making. If the owners had a 51/49 revenue-sharing plan with the players, there would likely be a salary cap. But they are not going to do that.
  10. a salary cap is not the solution to making teams better able to compete. It is the solution to rising costs. The smart teams will always have a leg up. It just won't cost this so much.
  11. kind of but not really. The playoffs are not random. They are only tangentially related to the regular season due to the fact that the teams with the best records make the playoffs. But the teams that usually win the playoffs are the teams that are playing the best baseball at the time the playoffs start. That might not be the best regular-season team. I don't know how to make it so the best regular season teams have a better chance other than to limit the number of teams that make the playoffs and that isn't happening.
  12. That's a good point. He had a great spring, but he looked very out of shape. Going a few innings in ST while ramping up to the regular season can be deceiving. I expect that he's going to come to camp this year in better shape. I expect that he's going to have a better year than last year.
  13. those projections are not accurate to that degree and you know that. Anyway, who cares? We just have to wait and see what happens.
  14. How exactly did they exceed expectations?
  15. Pearl Jam are doing two shows at Wrigley next year. That’s Hader’s money if the want him.
  16. None of those guys are likely to be around long term, maybe Bieber, but he's just Kyle Hendricks in a different body, so to speak. If they are going to dig deep into the top of the farm I hope it's for better than Cleveland has to offer.
  17. Goony, Are you saying that the jury is still out on Fields? I'm not understanding your position.
  18. the reason is that they are using a risky approach. But bullpens are a somewhat risky part of the team. if we can praise them when it pays off we can admonish them when it doesn’t.
  19. Cubs signed an AAAA lefty who Carter Hawkins drafted or something in Cleveland a million years ago. party on.
  20. It's the Bears, I'd assume unless they lose out everyone in the Poles tree aside from the OC will be back. Depending on where they will draft Fields may be back as well. The wildcard, if you want to call it that is that Fields is not tied to Poles.
  21. If they are in on Boras clients they will need to be patient. It's the way he operates. Even if they have given their final offer, they have to wait and see. I suppose they don't necessarily have to wait, but if they don't they probably aren't getting the guy. Boras seems to like the deadline negotiation strategy.
  22. Steele is a good pitcher who is going to give you innings and keep you in games most of the time. That is plenty valuable. I don't know anyone this side of a strawman who thinks Steele is destined for the HOF.
  23. The 7 stages of Cub fans offseason free agency 1 - Irrational exuberance- The Cubs have been linked to multiple big name free agents and reports are out that the Cubs are making a play and going to get their man 2- Giddy optimism. - Reports are that this time the Cubs are "all in" on player X 3 - Stoic realism - Other teams are making a bid and the Cubs are in the mix. It could come down to who makes the best offer 4 - Sticker shock - Reports are that the bidding is getting high 5 - Sour grapes - Team A really overpaid for player X. Aren't we all glad the Cubs didn't do that? 6 - Maudlin defeat - The Cubs will never sign another big-name player but the ones they did sign are kind of decent 7 - Spring training - If you squint hard enough, they have a chance.
