  1. Moving forward, the Ricketts way of doing business is going to be the predominant model if it isn't already. The Red Sox are taking the same approach. Truth be told, it's not a bad model if you have the right people in place to make it work. What could be better than a winning team that makes a ton of money for ownership? I don't know that Jed is the right guy, but if the consensus about the farm is accurate, he may be. I don't know that the Ricketts are smart enough to know though. I don't think they much care about winning as long as the money is flowing. I suppose if they go another year or two hovering around .500 he may get some heat, but I doubt it.
  2. Is Chicago sports radio as crazy as social media?
  3. I know they are asking for a huge contract, but it almost does not make sense that no other team is interested in Bellinger. I suppose maybe the Cubs are the only team interested in getting near the demands or something. But it seems like a lot of teams would be interested in a shorter contract.
  4. It will be glorious
  5. Let us please argue about important stuff like Nick Madrigal's noodle arm and wiffle ball bat. Or the wisdom of handing Michael Busch the starting 1B job out of ST, if that is going to happen. Let us not argue about unimportant stuff. But I must say, I forgot to mention that the Ricketts own a sports betting bar across the street from Wrigley in addition to all the other stuff. Owning any one of those properties around Wrigley would make someone wealthy beyond what almost any person (except, SSR) on this site could imagine. ---- But seriously, I think Nick Madrigal gets a lot of flack and would be the perfect table-setter for a team like the Yankees. He might score 100 runs in that lineup every day. He doesn't fit the Cubs needs.
  6. Yes. Theo left money on the table to get away from the issue. He helped create it, granted.
  7. So... how about that slogan? That's really something.
  8. I'm not that much of a hockey fan. I loved going to games in college though. But I really hope they can surround Bedard with some talent before long. He looks like a special player.
  9. Jed is betting on his development team to produce the next good Cubs team. He will tinker around with some stuff. They got their big acquisition for the next few years in Swanson, but the team is going to rise or fall based on the farm products.
  10. I don't know. I don't know many teams that own city blocks from which to derive revenue. I suppose the Red Sox and I'm not sure maybe St. Louis. But the network stuff seems fishy to me as well. They are basically paying themselves to broadcast games. So I guess if we want to do accounting tricks with the money.
  11. We don't know how much revenue they bring in through advertisements all over Wrigley, their concerts, the Winter Festival, the bars, apartments, and hotels, and the list goes on. I suppose one could say that those are not Cubs related, one would be obtuse in saying that, but it could be said.
  12. These are deals made every year for washed-up vets to give them a venue to get in shape and take up some innings playing in the ST, because they need the warm bodies. At cut time, they will be cut and released in all likelihood and try to catch on with someone else. They are not keeping a 38-year-old David Peralta on a team with designs for winning the division.
  13. don't feed the troll. That's the moral of the story. This is not some nuanced argument that maybe the Cubs are nearing the margin of profitability. We don't know how much money they make and what the bottom line looks like because they refuse to open their books to even the players. They make several millions of dollars on the concerts alone. Pearl Jam is supposed to be playing two shows at Wrigley this summer on top of Bruce last summer and whoever else they get for the venue. So they invested in Wrigley going on 10 years ago. Those loans are at most 20 year loans, they have half of it paid off by now. They own office buildings and apartments. They own the buildings around Wrigley that have the bars. They own a hotel. And they partially own a TV Network. This is in addition to the Cubs. They aren't in this for civic pride. They are not good people who care about the city of Chicago or normal people. They are the ones who pushed for the luxury tax. We have the emails and texts. So yeah, horsefeathers the Ricketts. And also horsefeathers anyone who tries to stand up for them. They are evil awful people, not merely business people trying to make a fortune. They have a fortune. Edit: I forgot that they also own a sports betting bar. Any one of those things would make someone wealthy.
  14. America, love it or leave it. 3rd grade logic.
  15. I totally agree with this. Jed is betting they cracked the drat and development code. also, Horton, Brown, Wicks, and a few other promising pitchers.
  16. The other thing that bothers me about PTRs comments is the stuff about how much money it takes to win the division. winning the division is not the goal. And with that mentality it’s going to happen less often than it should.
  17. They have all the revenue they need. They own all the land around Wrigley. It's just horsefeathers.
  18. I think he was merely responding to the question. It does some weird that Boras apparently has not engaged with the Cubs. Maybe Bellinger doesn't want to come back? But from the comments, it seems like the Cubs want a discussion.
  19. Brett has a thing out Bellinger and the Cubs are not close. No offer has been made according to Tommy Boy.
  20. If so, that stinks.
  21. I can hardly wait for the ST games to start. I'm most looking forward to seeing Horton pitch to big leaguers. Aside from that seeing Shaw hit and play will also be interesting. Some guy: "The Set Up Man" has a youtube channel showing Cub ST ABs on the back fields.
  22. I would put Wicks as the favorite. I think he ran out of gas at the end of last season, Steele too. But I look for Wicks be the in the starting rotation.
  23. Morel cleaned up his main problem from previous seasons last season. But now he needs to cut down on chasing. He’ll be 24 this year. Two years young than Busch. His offensive future is bright or they would not be trying so hard to find him a position. if he can’t play 3rd, it’s going to be tough going for him on the Cubs.
