    The opposite of love is not hate, it is indiference. That is how I feel about the Sox, I could care less. Except when they are playing the Cubs. But I still don't hate them. I just want to beat them.

    Wins are a team stat not a pitcher stat, per sey. But the stat is not unimportant either. Like all data they are just another piece of information that aid in judgment. It is important to analyze performance using all the data at hand. If a pitcher pitches well enough to keep his team in most ball games then he is a good pitcher IMO. The best way I know how to judge that is by looking at team wins when the pitcher is on the mound. It certianly is not a perfect metric but it is a pretty good indicator of overall effectiveness. ERA is not perfect either. A pitcher could give up several runs after an error, for example. In fact, there are a number of factors that could skew the data. In general I'm not a big fan of measures of central tendency (i.e., averages, etc.) as the only metric when looking at overall performance. I think they are often accurate but don't tell the whole story.

    Really, UK, Goony, JC, all you guys. You kill me. Outside of Zambrano, Maddux has only been the most consistently good pitcher the Cubs have had since his signing. The Cubs are 9 games over .500 when he pitches (in 49 starts) and he is likely to pitch another 200 innings this year. You can hang your hat on ERA all you want but the name of the game is wins, team wins. Can you honestly say that the same outcome would have occurred if Mitre, Guzman, Welly, would have started those games? Before you mention Rusch, since the Maddux signing Rusch has started 27 games going 9 and 6. In that time he has 12 ND and the team has won 5 and lost 7 in those games. The Cubs are one game over .500 when he pitches. But if it makes you feel better about lamenting over money that the Cubs don't seem to be concerned about go right ahead.

    In that same time, he's posted a 4.19 ERA, I think one of our farm hands could do that. You are totally missing the point. Look, I understand the math. But, ERA isn't all there is to the equation. I have neither the time nor the inclination to get into another one of these discussions. I agree to disagree. Done.

    I just can't help myself. I don't want to post in here, but I cannot resist. Since Maddux came back to the Cubs his team has won 29 of the 49 games he has pitched. That is a win % of .591 (20 and 13 last year, 9 and 7 this year). That tells me he is a quality pitcher. We can argue about the money, but I am hard pressed to believe that some "in house" farm hand could post those numbers.

    Viva Greg! Viva Wins! Viva option vesting! Wins may be a terrible stat to judge pitchers by, but it the only way to judge a team. When Maddux pitches his team wins more often than not. End of the stroy. Taking any stat to an extreme is not a good thing. Wins (for a pitcher) is just another stat, it is neither insignificant nor all-important.

    Walker expresses that he's comfortable at the top of the order. He also defers to what he calls Dusty's knowledge and says Corey can "carry a team." Walker sounds like the consumate teammate in those regards. He's expressing his desires while stating that he knows his manager has reasons and he respects that. Yea, it is amazing how different Walker's comments come across, depending on whose column you read. Sullivan should write for the gossip column and not the sports page. Hack! Miles' column was a lot more ballanced

    The end of May I said that June would be the tale of the tape for the Cubs. Well, the way I see it this team is not going to make it. Or is it? If Wood and Prior come back strong it gives them a fighting chance for the WC. But I really don't have much faith in the offense or the middle inning guys. The Farnshworth trade was bade in retrospect. Anyway, I hope the Cubs don't trade away some pretty good prospects for the likes of Kotsey, Wilson, or Floyd. B/c I don't think the team is good enough.

    goony (and others) I don't understand the complaining about the $9 mill to Maddux. As Serena noted, the Cubs must have thought he would reach that milestone or they wouldn't have offered him the money. If this assumption is true, then they must not be concerned about it. Why should we be? I would like to think that Hendry planned for the future when he signed Maddux. He had to know that he would be significantly overpaid in the last year of his deal. If the assumption is false then Hendry has to be fired, no question. If Maddux salary seriously hampers the Cubs efforts to get better that is tantimount Hendry comitting malpractice.

    I still think Nomar will be back, if for no other reason than he has nowhere else to go. The Yankees tried to get him to play 2nd base this year. I can see them trying again. I don't know if Nomar would consider it though. I would like to think that Nomar feels bad about taking the money and not playing and would agree to another one year contract. However, I don't know if Hendry & Co. will offer one. Fool me once type of thing.

    Jason had a very good game last night against a soft tossing lefty (going 2 for 3 with 2 walks). I think over the last week he has shown signs that he is begining to adjust to the bigs. I think he will have a great June.

    I'll assume that was directed towards me. (too lazy to see if anyone else has posted numbers on the first page) I'm not sure where you're going with that though. Corey played less than half a season in 03. Putting up his numbers in that year makes it look like he has regressed. I'll assume you forgot that he was hurt in '03. I'll also assume that you don't believe that '03 couldn't have had an effect on '04, especially at the end of the year. So I'll assume that your statistical analysis although accurate, does not tell the whole story. As warp wrote, we all wish Corey would be hitting better. But a bad Corey is still better than most CFers in the league.

    ? as for the rest, I think a case can be made that overall Patterson is better than any of them right now (excluding Beltran and Edmonds). And he has not even entered his prime yet. Corey has had to learn how to play at the major league level. He was rushed to the bigs after one season of A and one season of AA ball. So what you are seeing is his growth process. Hold it against him if you will. Maybe some people have unrealistic expecatations of Patterson? I don't know. But it is getting to be patheticly ridiculous.

    Coery haters help me out here: What exactly do you expect from him? Aside from Beltran (who is hurt) and Edmonds (who is like a hundered) what national league CFer is better. Who would you rather have out their and why? What is the source for your unfounded hatred of him?

    I don't know? I hope you are correct. But I would think it would take longer to heal with surgery then without? But I aint no medical doctor neither.

    IIRC, Piazza had a simlar injury and didn't come back until September. I will be mildly surprised if Nomar ever wears a Cub jersey again.

    There are two ends to a business negotiation. Maddux is providing a service, albeit an expensive one, and the Cubs agreed to pay him to provide the service. If the Cubs don't want to pay the money then they should cut or trade him. To sit him on the bench or pull him is un-fair labor practice. A practice I might add that led to the fixing of games a long time ago. My message to the Cubs don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

    This is great. I hope they let them use Alluminium bats. Sacreligious sure, but chicks and CubinNY dig the long ball. I don't want to see any 3-1 or 2-0 games.

    Come on. That is too harsh. I don't like Dusty managing the Cubs, but to suggest that it over the line.

    I wouldn't blame that on Carlos (lee). I'd blame it on Carlos (Z). If everybody else pitches Lee well why can't the Cubs?
