tigers are 1.5 back from the orioles and blue jays. most likely they need to go at least 2-1 against the braves this weekend, and possibly 3-0. the orioles have 3 games at the yankees (who are eliminated) and the blue jays 3 games in boston (who still have an outside chance at home field through the AL playoffs, and are 0.5 games ahead of the indians for home field in the ALDS). presumably the indians-tigers game on monday will be abandoned if the result doesn't affect the playoffs. but if detroit needs to win to get into a wild card tiebreaker, or if the indians are within a half game of the red sox or rangers, then i think it has to be played. it's possible that both teams will want to win that game, but it's also quite possible that the tigers will have to play knowing that they've been eliminated, or the indians will have to play knowing that they're locked in to the #2 or #3 seed in the AL. in which case it would be a team playing to win versus a team fielding a lineup similar to what the cubs trotted out tonight.
