  1. Give me a break. What are the better options? Craig Wilson? He'll cost a lot more. Name some others. Show me where you can get a guy like Ward for that price. And yeah, I'd love to have a great hitter waiting in the wings in case Lee gets hurt, but it's not realistic. Teams have budgets, and we can't just expect the Cubs to sign amazing hitters to back up every position on the team.
  2. That link doesn't work for me, but according to the data available at thehardballtimes, Jones' BABIP went from .283, and .282 in '04 and '05 to .321 in 2006. This was also accompanied by a large spike in LD%, but I don't think it's clear that this represents sustainable improvement. His BABIP went up, but it had been below average the previous two years. He'll be worse than last year most likely, but he certainly won't fall apart, and his BABIP can reasonably be expected to be above .282 or .283. http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs.aspx?playerid=735&position=RF&page=7&type=full
  3. I feel bad for them. Some of them seem to suspect that Meche isn't good, but can't help but be excited because they actually spent a lot of money and outbid larger-market teams for somebody. I can't say that I wouldn't feel the same way, in their position.
  4. The difference is, you might be leading the game 1-0. I can live with Soriano leading off and leading the game 1-0. I can't live with Izturis being the automatic out before Lee even gets his bat out of the rack. I wonder why nobody considers Barrett for the #2 hole. I think he'd be perfect. I guess I'm the only one, including Piniella. Because you either have to juggle your lineup 25% of the time or bat Blanco in the #2 spot when he plays. This shouldn't matter. I doubt the Mets hit Todd Pratt at cleanup back when Piazza was their best hitter, and I doubt that the Tigers put Vance Wilson in the 3-hole. Most teams with a good offensive catcher juggle the lineup when he sits. For the Cubs, all they have to do is put Blanco at #7 and move DeRosa to 2nd in the order. Not a big deal.
  5. so the zero games he's managed with the Cubs have sold you on him?
  6. Yeah that's a start, now throw in some good players and they'd probably be interested.
  7. he fell apart last year He had a busted knee, IIRC. boy, now his shoulder, elbow AND knee were hurt last year. No wonder he was so bad!
  8. Well I'd sure hope so.... the starting left fielder does tend to get a lot of playing time. I think I'd like Barrett in the 2-hole. He's a pretty free swinger who thrives when he gets pitches to hit. He'd see a lot to hit if he were in front of Lee and ARam. If you put him down at 6 or 7, he's got weaker hitters behind him and he's more likely to hack and make outs on lousy pitches.
  9. They're updated in the ATS thread in the General Fantasy Sports Discussions forum and they're updated in the Week 13 NFL games thread before the MNF game. Ah, my bad, I missed it.
  10. The odds of him putting up numbers like he did last season are very small, and the cost of acquiring him would be very high. He's 24 years old... I don't see why it's unlikely that his natural progression as a young player couldn't balance out the loss of some of that luck it seemed he had last year. As for the price, it would definitely be high, but you're acquiring a guy who projects to be the CF of the future. Not saying I'd trade major league resources (like Hill), but I'd have to consider giving up players like Pie and Veal.
  11. http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs/105_P_season_full_9_20061001.png Certainly suggests a mechanical flaw. When he was getting ground balls and improving his LD%, he was moderately succesful. The fly ball % has really skyrocketed the last two years, which is crippling for someone whose best pitch is supposed to be his sinking fastball.
  12. Why would the Cubs do that??? It makes no sense to trade a SP when your team is desperate for them. weren't you implying that the Cubs would have to trade Hill and Pie to get Jennings? Yeah, which means it wont happen. Thats what the Rockies GM said he wanted in return for Jennings. Well then he's an idiot. Hill for Jennings would be a steal for the Rockies, let alone getting the Cubs' best prospect.

  14. This would be a great deal for Toronto. They won't be able to afford Wells after this year, and Kemp might end up being as good as Wells in the future.
  15. The Rockies would trade Jennings for Rich Hill, straight up.
  16. I'm for it because my feeling is that the best available player for the rotation is Angel Guzman. Getting Marquis on a cheap, one year deal wouldn't keep Guzman out of the rotation if he looks good in the spring. That kind of deal can easily be dealt or DFA'd. (btw - I'm also hoping the the better than best option for the rotation will be a healthy Mark Prior. If we fill the entire rotation with 4/$40M guys it would mean that Hill would go back to Iowa if Prior and Miller came to camp healthy.) Bingo... this is why I'd prefer Marquis over someone like Suppan. The Cubs have enough "ifs" - Miller, a healthy Prior, a healthy Guzman, or guys like Marshall, Marmol, Veal, Gallagher, Mateo, etc, in the high minors. If you sign Suppan and if Hill remains a mainstay in the rotation, then you've got four spots taken up for the next 4 years, and only one for all those other options - at least a couple of whom will hopefully become better than Lilly and Suppan.
  17. Just say no to Jim Duquette making trades for your team.
  18. Injured shoulder. Either way, it makes sense. His OBP didn't drop that much and his BB% actually increased appreciably, but his BABIP dropped severely - as did his LD%. The peripherals suggest something that affected his swing, rather than some problem with his approach at the plate. If healthy, I'd actually expect him to have his best year in 2007.
  19. absolutely, a pinchhitter, spells guys at 3 positions and DH. Makes a lot of sense to me. If this is how he's used, I'm ok with it. If he takes playing time away from Murton (aside from the rare day off), I'll want to storm Tribune Tower with a pitchfork and torch. Seems like a good guy to give spot starts to against RHP who are usually tough on RH batters. Murton is still solid against RHP but has lacked power. I'm not proposing a platoon or anything, but Ward is probably a guy who could be inserted against a RHP in place of Murton without losing much (or anything, maybe). Keep Murton fresh for the long haul and stuff.
  20. Boatload of potential... probably could be another Grady Sizemore if he ever learned to control the strike zone. I'd go after him, but given what TB has been asking in trades, chances are the price will be too high.
  21. Cleveland (+7) vs Pittsburgh Hey, who's gonna update the standings from last week? I ask because my record was awesome
  22. well, so much for USA Soccer maybe being good
