    well, average starting pitchers have been overvalued in free agency, and apparently it's no different on the trade market.

    good, I don't want both Meche and Lilly. One I can live with, but giving a 4-year deal to both would be bad.

    Being as Schmidt wants to stay out west and has a deal that would give him $16M per over the next 3 years, he's going to need to be blown away. 4/$70M would probably do that - but I don't want the Cubs to invest that sort of money in him, really. I know, and I see that my reaction is a kneejerk one, but I think it's worth a few extra million to keep him away from St. Louis. Then we give him 4/$74M and make Jason Freakin Schmidt the highest paid pitcher in baseball. That'd make sense if he were that good. He's hardly even a #1 any more, and might not even be a #2 by the time his contract is up. Please, Cardinals, give him 4/$70M. I'd be thrilled.

    I am too but that doesn't really say much yeah same here... last year I predicted 74 wins and had absolutely no hopes for that club. I'm at least interested in this year's team because of Hill's development, the possibility of Wood in the bullpen, and of course the first real blockbuster free agent signing in who knows how long.

    I dunno if it's doable this offseason. I'd like to see them sign Carlos Guillen at SS next offseason, if the Tigers don't extend him.

    I think Church is better against LHP than Lofton, but I'm not positive. Either way, I don't think they'd have a situation like Trot Nixon, where the guy is just useless against LHP.

    That's all the Red Sox want? We could do better than that. Jacque, Eyre and Player That's not better at all. JJ Putz was a great closer for the M's this year. Jacque is an average 31 year old OF and Eyre is a slightly above average middle reliever. That player you're tossing in there would have to be named Pie or Veal. Pie or Veal eh? I'd do it in a heartbeat to get 300/400/550 out of LF. Well I'm still sure that wouldn't get it done. Pie and Veal haven't proven a thing at the major league level, so you're getting two average guys in their 30s and a minor leaguer who is still a question mark. They'd want to know they're getting something good, young and proven - Hill, or maybe Murton. Otherwise, they'll take Putz and the great year he had last year, plus I think a year or two til he's a UFA.

    I still don't understand how the Nats justified giving starts to guys like Ramon Ortiz and Pedro Astacio when Rauch most likely could have outperformed both of them as a starter. Frank Robinson. hence Ryan Church never really getting a chance there either

    Sign Lofton and trade for Church. Which one is the 4th OF? doesn't really matter to me - Lofton is old so he'll need time off, and Church can play LF and CF. Let them split time in CF. Neither guy is going to get pissed off if he isn't playing more than half the time.

    He pounded the ball in the second half, and his .060 IsoD is far from a disaster. Did Pie participate in any of the winter leagues? If so, how did he do? He did, and he has under a .600 OPS in it. in other words, he made ronny cedeno look like a solid hitter

    gee goony, i'm flattered :wink: on a more serious note, I'd take Meche Awww...get a room.... 8-) just kidding. Meche is more talented, and Lilly is less crappy. I'd take Angel Guzman and Sean Marshall. who's going to pitch the 200 innings that those two miss this year? I rather the Cubs keep the money, and wait till the deadline, instead of getting impatient and overpaying for medocre talent. 1) The Cubs may well be out of it by the deadline, meaning they'd be less inclined to make a trade 2) The price (in terms of prospects) can often go up at trade deadline time, because so many teams are trying to improve themselves.

    Hey, I'm all for just letting the young guys pitch and acknowledging that this team is going nowhere. The problem is that a lot of people think we can go with three of Prior/Miller/Marshall/Marmol/Guzman/Mateo and actually compete for a playoff spot next year.

    Well, if they get 700 PA out of LF, I'm not sure they think Floyd would give them anymore than 300, in which case Murton would have 400 there, and probably another 50-75 in pinch hitting opportunities and starts elsewhere. Murton still loses plate appearances from last year. I just don't see the point. He actually was solid last year, with a .365 OBP in just his first year, and I think he could be a good regular for years to come (not to mention a cheap regular). I don't understand taking ABs away from him with a guy like Floyd. I think a more versatile guy in the OF who is more a 4th-OF type than a guy who's going to expect 300-400 ABs, like Floyd will, is a better fit for the cubs.

    I'm gonna go out on a limb and say an average outfielder in his early 30s and a few not-so-great pitching prospects are not going to fetch a 25 year old guy who is at least a #2, and maybe a #1 if he puts it all together like he did in 2004. Oh, I doubt they take that deal, but it's a starting point. The bolded looked to be a large if, at times, last season. If he's rumored to be available- why not at least make the call? Jones, Veal, Patterson/Pie and a lower-level pitching prospect probably would be enough. Is it worth that? Maybe. He's darn good.

    This isn't CF-related, but is anyone else puzzled by the interest in Cliff Floyd? There's nowhere to play him, unless you're going to be sitting Murton a lot of the time against RHP, which is counterproductive to his development.
